It's only progress of technology if you can make it thinner without limiting/sacrificing performance, features, reliability, and repairability.

Each generation has been faster and offered better performance. I doubt the latest iMac would offer any less.

For the most part, comparing the successor of each or the equivalent of previous generation to current generation:

AMD 6000 series cards < Nvidia 600 series
Sandy Bridge < Ivy Bridge

All while consuming less power. Sounds like progress to me :)

Throw SSD/Flash into the mix and we got ourselves something faster and more reliable (Seagate Hard Drive replacement program anyone?)

Additionally, the 2009-2011 model iMacs were thicker to accommodate the 3.5" disk.

Seems like the 2.5" disk will be responsible for the reduction in thickness.

Lagging rmbp sales? What world is this? The MBP gained market share over all other notebooks after their roll out. The rmbp was a huge and is a huge success.

Barcelona the football team are pretty classy

Depends I guess on your view!

But I'm a Madridista....maybe you're talking to the wrong guy about that.

So what date do you think the announcement will be on? The 23rd most likely now?

We should get a slew of rumours building on this one tomorrow maybe. I guess there will be an announcement and not silent refresh right?

I'm saying 23rd.

Indeed.

If this new iMac sacrifices the ODD and higher capacity/density 3.5" HDDs in the pursuit of thinness, then what would I get compared to a Mac Mini with the same specs and a new, thinner Apple Thunderbolt Display?

It strikes me as more logical to just have EOL'd the iMac and released an Ivy Bridge Mac Mini and new, thinner ATD with USB3. Simplify the product line.

Don't need portability? Buy a Mac Mini and park your ATD on top of it.

Need portability? Buy a MacBook Air / MacBook Pro and park it behind your ATD with the BackPack II.

So what do you guys think about the delay of the 27" model? Will it be as long as between rMBP 15" and 13"? Really need a 27" asap...

If the 27" version was coming later, wouldn't you expect there would be more 27" 2011 iMacs in stock currently?

Hopefully we've seen the back of the Yellow Screens.

How much more expensive, on average, do you think the new Models will be?

An average of 1000-2000$ I guess

You think they will be between 1000-2000USD more expensive? So..... Doubling the prices? I really doubt that. 2-500 USD max. Anything else would put them in the Pro ballpark. And no one is buying a consumer desktop for Pro prices. Or atleast, not many. If the prices go up by more than 500 USD I'm buying 2011 tech after all. The sadness only washed over me just now.

That would possible include base SSD and thinner, but what else hardware wise would drive the cost increase? If the price point goes up that much, Apple might alienate some potential customers.

plus wouldn't it be that much harder to justify with no ODD as well?

Indeed.

The ODD is not a "feature" to me and many other folks. And for the hard drive issue, it's also not just in the pursuit of thinness, but a pursuit of performance. SSDs obviously smoke HDDs and consumers will definitely feel how fast the iMac is right out of the box.

Seriously though, I think arguing about mass storage space in this day is becoming meaningless. We're on the eve of iTunes 11, which should bring Netflix-like streaming to the plate via iCloud. Most consumers don't save movies, TV shows, or large files because of Netflix. And app stores like the Mac App Store and Steam allow for an unlimited number of downloading of purchased content. Furthermore, Apple has the recovery partition and recovery download of OS X for reinstalls. And of course, let's never forget that the external ODD exists for purchase any time of the day for those who really need it.

Seems very apparent to me of Apple's direction. There is no base left uncovered for an ODD less, SSD equipped iMac for today and the future.

I bet the alleged price increase is due to retina or something like quad HD on the smaller sized models. That or something crazy. I think apple has an ace up their sleeve. Reading everyone's bickering is also entertaining lol.

They'd have to be very special for me to pay more than 1400 Euro for a 21.5".

I'll buy a 2011 model if the price is crazy, or look elsewhere, even though I'm not keen on my next machine being Windows.

I was only half joking with the 1000-2000 usd increase. THough I feel that here in Norway, only a slight increase in the US would end up as a 1000USD pricebump here.
Not that I care, with this intense delay I´ve saved up enough to pay about 7000 USD for that iMac.....so BRING IT ON!

Btw, do you think Apple may have gone back to the mobile CPU for this new design, I think so. I think I would prefer the same size and desktop GPU and CPU instead of thin design and all Mobile. But, a super slim sexy iMac is good too :)

Good point. We're losing features but gaining price increase. Something's fishy here.

And soldered on RAM and that awesome video of Johnny Ive speaking really....slow....ly. About how orgasmic the design is and whatnot. If Apple made it thicker slightly for better cooling and possibly easier to replace hard drives on your own most everyone would love that.

Can't wait for that new impossibly thin Mac Pro. I can only imagine the people at WETA and ILM only think about how thick their workstations are. rMBP is very overrated, seen same performance on $900 machines easily, and when they do get high PPI displays on the other side it will still be 700 cheaper with the ability to replace RAM and storage on your own.

Apple could sell this with a pentium and some fanboys would say its revolutionary because of freaking form factor....on a desktop.... yeah.

Also an iMac pro (what we should get) and this iMac for hipsters could be accomplished. Make 2 versions. But it wouldnt go with the LSD vision.
