After desperately wanting a top 27 with extra graphics for ages I've decided I'm going to go for the top 21 with extra processor. As even though ill have an awful graphics card with only 512mb ill have a better CPU and more money for external drives etc.

Raging you can put the 2GB graphics in the top 21 :(:(

Being on the update!! I can't wait!

I would have personally liked 1GB in my 2011 21.5" iMac, but 512MB isn't bad considering you're pushing a smaller resolution on a smaller screen.

But I also went for the 21.5" and used the extra cash on the SSD and processor as well. Performs great.

If Apple made it thicker slightly for better cooling and possibly easier to replace hard drives on your own most everyone would love that.

Doubtful. The overwhelming majority of MacMini/iMac and notebook owners don't even upgrade their RAM. Most people simply don't touch the insides of their computers and don't need to. Most aren't posting in these types of forums either, so the posts of desired specs (including the desire to easily replace one's own internal drives) really only resides in a small minority of users. :apple:

Would love to see a survey of users proving that.

The Majority of all users won't touch the inside, but if you think a large # of users wouldn't like to add their own RAM without paying Apple's insane prices and upgrade the hard drive on their own as well then you are kidding yourselves. I am guessing both of you would be technically savvy to do that simple procedure if need be and save some $$$.

I guess options aren't okay unless Apple said so one day.

The ODD is not a "feature" to me and many other folks.

And it's a fair point. But I also believe it's also a fair point that it is a feature to me and many other folks (based on responses in this thread).

Apple offers the rMBP and the Mac Mini without an ODD and both can be connected to an Apple Thunderbolt Display or a third-party alternative.

If Apple removes the ODD from the iMac, then it's no different, functionally, from a Mac Mini or rMBP with an Apple Thunderbolt Display with the same components. So Apple's decision is being driven by, effectively, spite and that rubs me the wrong way a bit just on principle.

Now being larger, the iMac might be able to handle higher-clocked CPUs and GPUs, but then again, being thinner that's going to affect cooling (while my iMac runs quiet in terms of fan speeds, the aluminum back is very hot under load).

But this is Apple and they do like to nickel-and-dime folks. And $79 is not much when you factor in a loaded iMac will probably close in on $3000.

And for the hard drive issue, it's also not just in the pursuit of thinness, but a pursuit of performance. SSDs obviously smoke HDDs and consumers will definitely feel how fast the iMac is right out of the box.

No argument there. My iMac has an SSD and I'll never go back to spinning metal for primary storage (OS and apps). And my media needs are so large I have no choice but to go external. But I do wish my iMac had a HDD as well as an SSD and I'd have liked to have that option going forward. *shrug*

Anyway, this just made the decision to make my next Macintosh to be only a Haswell MacBook Air instead of an MBA and iMac. Hopefully they will have a quad-core option on the MBA, but then maybe I'll be done Handbraking DVDs by then and won't need it. :p

A large majority of consumers gladly pay Apple to add RAM to their iMacs as-is and it takes what, 2 minutes?

Day 14

Ive been trying to pass time buy pulling my iMac G5 out. Apple haven't said a word I dont think ill be able to last much longer I am weakening.

I was just thinking here Kou said that the 21 inch will be ready in sep then the 27 inch one in late October, this leads me to believe that apple had the 21 inch ready in sep but waited out til October to get them released both at the same time, I mean why wouldn't they have it ready for the holiday season, also there has been a lack of 27 inch ones in stock more than the 21 inch one. In other words I find hard to believe apple will release one then the other it doesn't look good for them and its just doesn't make sense. I'm curious what you guys think about this whole thing?

How about any speculations about any changes/updates that might be made to the mouse, keyboard, or trackpad? Don't own any of these, so I'm not sure what could use improvement. How many cycles do these usually take to get refreshed? Anyone?

I think they'll release together, but 27" will be supply constrained quite quickly. But, I've never thought of iMac as a holiday purchase, it seems too big an investment for that. Maybe I'm cheap.

I agree with you but if apple didn't consider it a "holiday item" then they wouldn't even offer the crappy discount they give but they still do to the iMacs so I somewhat agree but he lower end iMac is pretty cheap Is a really nice addition to a home or high school student who doesn't really need a laptop until college, idk I just see that often around me

my 2 cents..

In reply to the person pages back saying how it will loose alot of tech due to it being so thin, the way I read the report it doesn't say its going to be thinner, just that the edges are tapered to give the illusion of a knife edge, aka like that fake photo of the iphone 5 with the tapered back, so it starts thin going to its normal thickness in the middle but looks wise should give the illusion of being very thin.

Hoping the RAM is upgradeable, I dislike having to pay extra to get an i7 in a £1800 computer, let alone getting charged for what is possible in pretty much every other PC in the world.

With the tech out now, an SSD is a must, even if they go the route of 128gb SSD 1TB disk as a standard (would be nice to have the option of 2 small SSD's, 1 spindisk for OS, scratch disk, storage).

Hope the price increase isn't ridiculous, or if the price increase is hefty then they give you top spec as standard instead of paying through the teeth for optional extra's.

There was reports of lamination issues previously for the 27" so hopefully we have waited over 500 days so they can release them both at the same time, if not maybe they will do the opposite of the MBP and have sexy updated 21" then oldschool looking update for the 27" geared more towards performance tech inside, to fill the outdated MacPro gap there is at the moment.

Either way this is killing me, although waiting for it to be annoucned is no where near as bad as the 'paying for it and waiting for it to be delivered' stage :D

Wondering ... what's the typical price decrease for the out-going product? Saving $500 sounds pretty good, even if I'm getting 2011 technology.

Nah, that hurt just writing it. Damn, have to get the 2012 teardrop shape running down my cheek poring over rumor sites madness.

I think I read somewhere that the keys on the keyboard will be slimmer and that the wireless mouse, keyboard and trackpad will use the new bluetooth tech which uses less power.

Apple doesn't discount new hardware....they just convert them to refurbished (as far as I'm aware). Any product left in other stores is up to them.

There's been no credible rumors on Keyboards/Mice yet.

There will never be a desktop card in an all in one from Apple. The lines between mobile and desktop GPUs are beginning to blur in some regard. The form factor of a mobile card suits the All in One better (MXM slot, no need fr a power connect, etc). A desktop card is modular by design to fit ATX style cases and would require a bit of R&D to "reinvent the wheel" in sorts.

I am not really convinced of that. An L-type connector off the motherboard so the card is vertical, a little bit of clever fan placement and you would be fine.

Dilemma!

I have been waiting since about may for this new iMac to come out. Since hearing this new rumor about the higher price tag and no optical drive but maybe an SSD standard I'm a little torn.

I was kinda hoping they didn't throw out the ODD but my only reason being to run windows through bootcamp for certain programs for school. That being said, is there a way to instal win7 through USB for use through bootcamp. I don't really want to do a virtual machine

I was only half joking with the 1000-2000 usd increase. THough I feel that here in Norway, only a slight increase in the US would end up as a 1000USD pricebump here.
Not that I care, with this intense delay I´ve saved up enough to pay about 7000 USD for that iMac.....so BRING IT ON!

Btw, do you think Apple may have gone back to the mobile CPU for this new design, I think so. I think I would prefer the same size and desktop GPU and CPU instead of thin design and all Mobile. But, a super slim sexy iMac is good too :)

I thought about that myself. They would get rid of some heat issues, and make it super silent like the current laptops with the Assam fan. And they would be ready for Haswell that, IMO, will be a laptop aimed launch.

They only recently changed to desktop CPUs, so I find the move a bit of a bust, but the Apple lands where it falls.

If I could choose, I'd keep current design, improve heat dissipation with bigger assym fans, drop rotating drives, drop ODD and shove a desktop CPU/GPU in there.

They will still have room for Desktop CPUs if they loose the ODD and desktop HDDs, and with improved lamination. So at the very least, I hope for continued desktop CPUs.

Yes I believe bootcamp allows you to create a bootable USB for win 7 as long as you have the DVD image on your hard drive.

I don't care what they do with the keyboards but it would be nice if the wireless keyboard had a number pad... maybe I'm a minority, but it kinda sucks to have to buy a wired keyboard to get the numbers and arrow separate from the standard letter layout

I guess I better stock up on external drives for all my music, photos, and movies seeing that old fashioned hdd's are going extinct according to Apple.
