God I hope they don't remove the optical (CD DVD) drive just yet. Save that for the next two years, Apple, just don't do it yet this year. The "cloud" is still in its infancy, so for downloading/installing huge software suites (e.g. MS office) I still prefer the option of being able to use those DVD discs.

At the very least, the optical drive *should* be a BTO option. At the very least.

I planning on getting my first Mac early next year or when the new iMac's come out. If removing the SuperDrive/optical drive provides room inside for something that wouldn't have been included if the SuperDrive were still there, then I'm all for losing the SuperDrive, don't get me wrong I still use a lot of CDs and DVDs and burn to them too so an optical drive is going to be very important to me.

It's going to be still possible to purchase an external optical drive, plus this makes for an easier replacement when the optical drive fails, rather than having to get into the guts of the iMac to replace the internal one. Perhaps not has tidy an option as an internal optical drive but its still going to allow the use of CDs and DVDs so that's the main thing.

Lol....

Yikes !!

Now thats thin. About the same as that 'fake' iphone 5 'cardbord-cutout' that's floating round online.

What if Apple said "We are going to remove the Superdrive from our iMacs, so if you need one, you must purchase our external." Why would people flip more people out, compared to ultrabooks, where people"s reasoning is, "we don't care"

Juse because its a desktop? Or because there'd be more stuff on your desk ?

I guess, it makes more of a sense to loose it ON an iMac, since your never carrying this round with you.

Why does it need to be thinner?

People?

People?

Ok.

Its a DESKTOP. There is ZERO need for it to be thinner.

Make it 3 inch's thicker! Jam some awesome hardware in it!

So while this is good news it's followed by bad news in that Apple doesn't confirm the iMac will be released at the iPad mini event like it did the 13in MacBook what a joke.

They don't even give a damn about desktops at this point it's all about the next thinnest portable device out:rolleyes:

Sorry, but this is "Exactly" what is wrong with Apple

If anything should "SHOUT" form over function, making a non mobile desktop computer (that is build for a serious fast task - computing) thinner just for aesthetic reasons, when it makes no difference to the products usefulness is just utterly idiotic.

Are desks collapsing due to the current iMac weight?
Can you get more iMacs on your desk if the shave another few mm off the thickness?
You you sit side on and think, if only the iMac was a bit thinner?
Do you have trouble positioning the iMac on your desk due to it's thickness?

The iMac is "Supposed" to be the General Public's serious computer (not Mac Pro) it's supposed to be technically excellent.

At the moment, due to Apples insistence on form over function it is limited to laptop chip sets as the case is too cramped and will overheat.
Internal components run HOT, yes they are within tolerance, but still hotter than they need to run. And all heat does is shorten the lifespan of electronics.

Some have suggested the constant yellow screen issues that have plagued the iMas for years is down to the heat/cramped conditions the screen has to sit within.

It just seem crazy to make something, technically worse for visual sake, esp when on a desktop the thickness is a non issue.

An iPhone and iPad and iPod all have to be limited technically in what they can do due to practical size and weight limitations, that is obvious.

An iMac should not be deliberately burdened by those limitations.
Do you really want iMacs always constricted to be not as good as they could be? Perhaps, who knows, even glued together to save that extra 0.5mm?

sorry to say but don't like it don't buy it. Apple are about aesthetics if you haven't already realised that is why they are the most successful. People value aesthetics otherwise there wouldn't be any iconic buildings, stadiums, art galleries etc. There is always your homemade bomb PC to go to if all you are concerned about is raw power. GO GO GO!

PS don't judge before you try it.

Just...wow...so it's okay if the performance is horrible, the ergonomics make your wrists hurt just thinking about them, they're 3 times the price of the competition, and have far less functionality. As long as they don't look like ****.

I actually find the keyboard the most comfy to use out of everything lol. Mouse yeh Apple have always failed in that department

It's an All-in-one.

Why does that mean it needs to be thinner?

Give me one good reason why it needs to be thinner.

It sicks on a desk. Its not a mobile computer.

Not true, Apple makes the majority of their money off the iToys. They have failed to capture any meaningful marketshare in the PC world for 25 years now.

Thinner and lighter works even on a desktop machine - see Samsung LED TVs, they are quite a lot thinner than the other brands and people love it - it's very impressive when you see it in a store.

If only people could understand this instead of letting their scepticism get in the way of every word they say lol

so the word aesthetic doesn't apply to their phones/ipods ?

meaningful marketshare? They have a good % up there now and back in the early 90s Apple was pretty much a standard

thinner

I want my new iMac to look like this. I don't go for full body anymore. Full body is way too PC.

TOOskinny.jpg

Thin & light-er

With this, comes heat, and the constant battle between running CPU's cooler, since this is the only reason to thinner designs today.

You don't wanna make it too thin, otherwise it wouuld be too ease to knock over.

However, i agree,,, its a desktop, not a laptop, so while thin is good, on a desktop use, i don't see mich sense in thinner, even with new chipsets, in the iMac

In a laptop, it makes sense since you take it out if the house, but an IMac is not goong anywhere.

I stick this in the same catagory as the iPhone 's "not having a case because it hides the iphne", You don't look at this 24/7 do you???

If yes, then maybie your a minority. What do you do duing the day..

It's sensible that the iMac would see some kind of design overhaul otherwise Apple could just have done a Intel IvyBridge refresh early summer, or mid-summer to have it available with OS X Mountain Lion.

I don't see the logic of waiting with the refresh for this long if they are not going to make something extra out of it, perhaps a retina display or something? Who knows.. Brining a simply spec refresh this late would be somewhat underwhelming, but perhaps they've waited for the right graphic chips from nVIDIA or something to crank into the iMac?

Really Apple? Really? Has a single person on the entire f'in planet said, "You know, I'd buy one of those new fangeled iMacs, if it wasn't so easy to upgrade, and so damn thick front to back."

???

WTF Apple?

Yes, whatever you do, don't fix the most glaring issues with the already anorexic iMac.. Hell no, heaven forbid. Don't make it easier to upgrade and service.. That wouldn't make a damn bit of sense *at all*!!!!! Let's toss some damn glue into the mix and make things *worse*!!!!!

Sweet baby jesus in a chamber of commerce manger display, what are y'all at Apple smoking? Whatever it is, I *want some* dammit! I want to see the color(s) of the sky in your world, where this makes any fracing sense *at all*!!!!!!!!!

First the new MacBook "Pro", now this?

It's getting to the point where I may just stock up on used older Macs that aren't so f'in crippled.. Hopefully, by the time they all die, someone at Apple will have come to their god damned senses!

So confused. Buy or not buy?

True that

However, in this day and age, i bet not only Apple here does this 'non-removable parts'.

What about PC ultra-books? If Apple does this, then the same thin design must also hold true for the composition to.

Its a "toss out the old, in with the new' type of world.

But then again, us Apple uses are used to that aren't they ? :)

We just love complaining every time a new change comes along. Weather its a design change, or not. Maybe Apple just felt like a new charging cable was required for the iPad 3. Lets see, how many customers we can flip off.

What we really need is a 17" MBP to fill the spectrum of portable computers.

Regarding the IMAC, aesthetic design is a good thing, but in my view, it is better to have a little bit of upgradeability, with the RAM and HardDrive (or SSD).

However, it does seem that Apple has really begun to recognize that sealing devices to make them non-upgradeable (or difficult to upgrade by the end user) is the wave of the future of their products. If their products last a long time (more than 5 years), then maybe this non-upgradability is a less important factor.

I would like to see a spectrum of sizes for a teardrop IMAC, but it seems to me most likely that they will come out with only two sizes (probably 21.5" and 27"), and making the smaller screen retina does not seem too likely, unless it is smaller than 21.5"

Rule 1: electronics get better over time.

Haha! You wish! Ever had a stereo bought in the mid 80ies or so (you can actually pick any electronic device built in the say 70ies or 80ies, for that matter)? Now THAT technology lasted (for more than 20 years, to be specific).

Now ever bought a CD/DVD/whatever player recently? How long until the first disks started to stutter? Ever heard of "planned obsolescence?" (which is actually nothing new: ever wondered why light bulps stop working after 5 years or so? When built properly they would actually last for 100 years!)

Thinner means killing the semi-professional and professional markets. Where are these thunderbolt disks at a non-republican price ? Apple is killing option of 2 hard drives in any decent entry level desktop. Is that so much to ask of ?

It's an All-in-one.

It is an desktop and an all-in-one. All in one is just a "commercial language".

Greetings from a
owner of ugly thin iMac 27"
with only one hard-drive.

You do realise that this "non-replaceable' stuff, put my life on the line to just concentrating in PC's......for my mates,..

If this becomes the norm..... There will be no DIY's repairs left, apart from the service centres.

I guess, this is a 'strong' hint in that direction.

Oh well.... Nice knowing yaz.....

sorry to say but don't like it don't buy it.

Hello? Helloooo? Anybody at home? That's the right fanboi attitude: shut up and give the cash - don't ask, don't complain!

If it was that easy: some people actually PAY for their software, some people have established workflows - and they don't WANT to change to other systems!

Yes, I am very content with my 27" iMac 2008. Up to the point that I'm not in a hurry to upgrade - but if that option is fading away to upgrade to a *reasonable desktop* system then I'll be really upset! It's not like that'll change anything - until people start to think and stop buying crippled desktops! And even then, Apple might not care at all, given that they nowadays make all their money with iPhones and gadgets...what a pity!

Apple doesn't need happy desktop (not to forget professional users!) users anymore!

----------

If the DVD is dropped I'll just get an external one, how things have come full circle.

So what's the point in having an integrated desktop - just to have all the external drives that don't fit into the body anymore lying and wired on your desk like the guts of a slaughtered sheep?!

Wrong!

Everything has a form. A tower simply has a form which is the result of a functional design. It goes under the desk and you don't even see it unless you change a DVD or some such thing.

Taking an iMac which already has thermal design problems and making it even smaller is what defies logic, but then that is not what is dictating the design of the iMac.

Thanks, teacher, but I understand form and function, I've even got me some learnin' in the subject, but I'm not sure what you're referring to when you lecture me on the thinness of the iMac - I don't recall ever saying anything about it except that it's a lovely design. I've liked every single iteration of the Macintosh and iMac's designs and believe that not only do they function (wonderfully), they also are lovely to look at. Too bad more manufacturers don't put an equal amount of effort into form as they do into function, the world would be filled with gorgeous devices.

Someone on here mentioned a new Mac Mini (tower) design that would involve stackable modules you add with different components in each, that sounds very interesting and begins to apply some form to the tower, which could use it.

You can pick external DVD drives up for less than £25. Is that really a big problem when you're paying four-figure sums for a computer? And how often do you use a DVD drive to warrant an external version a 'problem' ?

The situation is no different than what happened with 3.5" floppy disks, and most people liked the trade-off for smaller machines.
