Does anyone else think the way they've presented/branded this lineup bodes well for future 17" and 13" retina updates? An eventual merging of the Air and Pro lines is all but certain, seeing as how the next gen MBPs have an identical form factor.

One year from now, it's going to be a single lineup with retina across the board. By then, display technology will have improved enough (and prices dropped) to make a 17" retina laptop feasible.

Edit: Wow, the current 17" is completely gone from the store. Nevermind.

Would you buy this then Thundersteele?

No, I have a relatively new 2011 15'' MBP with SSD. But it is a very good laptop, for a good price imho. Take the old 15'' MBP base model, add the smallest SSD and the high-res screen option, and you match the price of the new retina MBP - but that one has more storage, more RAM, and a better(?) screen.

I see very few reasons to buy the normal 15'' MBP now, except for those who need the optical drive or more storage at lower cost.

It might be a good idea to wait for a few reviews... and wait a few month, so that more applications are upgraded.

edit: Actually, I'm most interested in how the new cooling solution will work out.

The SSD upgrade to 768gb is $500.

The RAM upgrade to 16gb is $200.

The processor upgrade to 2.7GHz is $250.

Jeez.

Gosh darn it.

The Next Generation MBP is cool and all, but I have one minor issue with it. 256 GB is a bit small for me. I'm upgrading from an old MacMini with 80 GB of storage, sure, but I want to be able to use it for a long time without running out of disk space. The fact that it's neither BTO-upgradable or user-upgradable is worrisome.
The RAM too, but not so much. 8 GB should be enough for now, but it's stupid you can only have 16 GB BTO instead of putting it in yourself when you start needing it.

Now the regular MPBs do offer user-replaceable storage and RAM, but they don't have the retina display, and are thicker and heavier due to the ODD which I personally don't need.

Hmm...

(Also can we get matte screens on the Next Generation MPB?)

Wondering if the new "High Efficiency Fans" (asymmetrically spaced impeller blades) will actually solve the MBP overheating problems.

Just buy a portable hard drive. Put everything important on the MBP, and everything else on the hard drive. Another couple of TB storage for less than $150.

How dumb is that? Surely there can be no technical or physical reason why, it must be purely a marketing decision

Because one of the obnoxious things about Apple is they would like to force the average person, instead of simply going to Fry's and buying some more RAM to swap in to his or her machine, to go buy an entire new computer.

I both love and am a little disappointed at the same time.

1. No user upgradeable storage
2. Ditto with RAM. This hurts man.
3. small thing but ONLY ONE HEADPHONE INPUT. what happened to the headphone + microphone jacks like on the last one?!! This small thing is EXTREMELY important to me.
4. only two usb ports? WTF
5. Also, only 720p camera? Come on this 2012. they probably will update to 1080p in the spec bump next year.
6. $2800 for the high end 15 inch?!!? WTF. I thought the predictions of $3000 were laughable but I guess not.
7. Still only Stereo speakers. No subwoofer on the retina model either!

The single jack supports both audio in and out, just like on the Air and 13" MBP:

- Headphone port
-Support for Apple iPhone headset with remote and microphone
-Support for audio line out

If you need separate connectors for in and out you can just buy a cheap splitter cable.
