Man, this thing is gonna cost an arm and a leg here in Europe (Poland). I'll wait 2-3 months and see what's wrong with it LOL Let other people test them and then get one myself... hopefully.

Wondering if the new "High Efficiency Fans" (asymmetrically spaced impeller blades) will actually solve the MBP overheating problems.

I saw some pictures of the new MBP on The Verge and there are visible vents along the bottom seams of the chassis. They probably had to add those in for cooling purposes. It will be interesting to see if the new retina MBP is a crotch burner.

Yes, I gotta say I agree with you on that. The base RAM and SSD just wouldn't be enough for me.

Yes. You could order much later than this. A big part of their summer market is college students, after all.

I've ordered mine! It says 3 to 5 weeks before it will ship though. Oh man! Oh well, I can wait a little bit. With my company discount, I did the upgrades (16 GB RAM and 768 SSD) for about $3,200. Of course, that doesn't count taxes or my Apple Care...

The PPI is the same (220) as is found on the PS Vita, which isn't as dense as the ipad 3 when placed side by side from equal viewing distance, though this will be held further away.

Congratulations on the big purchase. I've been checking the education pricing as well, since I have family still in college (I fortunately (or unfortunately) just graduated) so I'm definitely going to set up the purchase in their name to get that discount.

Incidentally, I'd never noticed that a student discount applies to hardware upgrades and the Apple Care plan as well. The pricing is almost sane now.

8GB Ram and get it now or pay 200 and get it in 3 to 5 weeks. I really don't want to wait and i really don't want to spend 200 on ram.

Never had more than 8gb in any of my Macs laptops. Never use more than 4gb at a time. At the most.

Damn you Apple.

ships today = available for pickup at the apple store?

Not according to the store in Grand Central. Where - if anywhere - I'd expect them to have some. 5-7 to ship in the online store.

Since I just bought a BTO I expect that will prove accurate. I'll find out when the notification comes through...

Hey all - quick question, hope someone can help me out.

My girlfriend works at a University, so I'm going to get the $200 education discount through her. Can I also do in-store pickup on the online order/can I go to a physical store to purchase and still get the $200 discount?

I live semi-close to Delaware (no sales tax), and would love to get the new retina MBP from there ALSO w/ the $200 discount.

My girlfriend's university is not in Delaware, it's in Washington, D.C.

Any thoughts?

Does anyone else think the way they've presented/branded this lineup bodes well for future 17" and 13" retina updates? An eventual merging of the Air and Pro lines is all but certain, seeing as how the next gen MBPs have an identical form factor.

One year from now, it's going to be a single lineup with retina across the board. By then, display technology will have improved enough (and prices dropped) to make a 17" retina laptop feasible.

Edit: Wow, the current 17" is completely gone from the store. Nevermind.

I definitely think we're going to see a 13" version of this eventually. Then in a year or two the current form factors will be quietly dropped. Probably closer to one year than two.

That gives people a year to get used to the fact that Apple considers no optical drive, no Ethernet, and all SSD storage to be the future.

Ordered the retina base. Was tempted to upgrade the ram but I think 8gb will be fine and i thought it might delay the shipping.

Says it ships in 5-7 business days, so we'll see.

Pretty stoked :)

Would like to know if you can get it in store too.

I've decided the price gap between the 256GB and 512GB from a storage standpoint is unjustifiable when I can simply purchase a 1TB external for any extra data I may need to save.

The only question I have is there a noticeable difference between the 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 and the 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7?

I will be using the computer for intensive music production, graphic design and web development. I also will be running some music production software through bootcamp with both USB slots being occupied by midi devices. I've already decided on 16GB RAM.

If you go in the store, your girlfriend will have to do the purchasing, since in-store you have to show proof of enrollment to get the discount. If you go in and say you're using your girlfriend's education discount they'll just say no. So unless your girlfriend is going physically with you to the store, it probably wouldn't go well.

If you do a custom order with upgrading components, you can't run in and pick it up right away. They have to actually put it together and ship it out.

It doesn't matter that your girlfriend's university is in D.C. and not Delaware. Sales tax is based on the location of the store, not the location of the school.

Having a tough time deciding on which retina model to order:

  • I was planning on ordering the base but upgrading the storage to 512GB, however that is not a BTO option. The only way to get the increased storage i to order the high end model. I have a 500GB hard drive now (350G utilized), linked to a Pegasus R6. I could migrate more onto the Pegasus, but I like the idea of having more storage. Also in the very near future the price of flash memory will drop and 256GB might not be as strong for future resale.
  • I am also debating the 16GB RAM. I am a heavy Aperture and Photoshop user, and saw a noticable preformance jump from 4GB to 8GB on my early 2011 MBP. WOndering is I will get anything incremental from the 16GB.

Awww, who am I kidding. I know I will pull the trigger on both upgrades ($2,759US with my corporate discount), but I need to ruminate over it for awhile.

QUESTION: Does purchasing ANY of the new MacBook Pro's mean a FREE download of Mountain Lion this summer?

(I have bought a base model 13 inch MBP.)
