Thanks. I understand what SSD is... I just think Apple is being very unclear with this spec. I work for a web development company and each person that has a Mac (except me) has upgraded to an SSD in the last month or so for a really reasonable price. I'm going to be thoroughly irritated if my new Mac doesn't either come with a SSD or at least allow for me to install one myself.

Flash should be as fast as SSD. You will not be able to change from flash to SSD though.

Anyone know if when 13 inch mbp will get retina will it have dedicated graphics or onboard?

In brief does retina need dedicated gpu ??
According to the Intel HD4000 (integrated graphics) specifications, it supports resolutions of up to 2560x1600 (see [1]) which would be the supposed retina resolution on a 13" display. So dedicated graphics would not be absolutely required. They might be considered necessary for performance reasons, though.

Other people in this thread are calling it SSD. Is this totally incorrect?
No. An SSD is just flash storage in a different package.

Which new Mac are you buying?

The MBP (non-retina) has upgradeable SSD and memory that you can do yourself quite easy.

The retina version seems to have the RAM soldered on, but the SSD looks like a blade m-sata type that is removable.

What is irritating you?

Where is a good place to order blade m-sata type? If that is truly what they have.

Thanks, everyone! I've been holding out for quite awhile - I currently have an early 2008 MBP. Just wanted to make sure I was going to be just as excited as I initially thought. As long as this "flash" is comparable to the SSD and will work similarily, I should be ok. I guess we'll get more clarification once they start shipping or showing up in stores.

If you go with retina version i doubt you can upgrade anything afterwords... ram is on board and.same for flash drive... really sad...

If any of these go bad in future ur screwed... while.now you can change a drive and ram...

Im leaning towards a non retina.version.

Ordered top spec new retina.
too many days to wait >.>
expedited shipping... still like a week and a half.
dammit.

I ordered the retina. It's the big change I've been waiting for. I have AppleCare and they've always been fantastic, so hopefully I'll have nothing to worry about.

Seems that there are mixed speculations about whether or not the "flash"/SSD is actually soldered on.

Thanks mate for the clarification. I hope they include dedicated gpu in 13 inch

New Macbook Pro is here

I'm defiantly getting one of these...

HDMI ,, who would have thought of that on a Mac without a dongle,,, USB 3.0 I has my doubts, so I was wrong there.... too ... for $400 extra its worth the Retina Display alone.... Bit of a drag though its still slightly thicker at 0.71 inch at the thickest. If Apple could do all this at exactly the same size as the Air, (few inches less), then it would be even more of a "crowd going wild"

However, its still great anyway. :apple:

I thought the SSD is user-replaceable ..... Isn't it just a stick very similar to yours replaceable DDR memory..... (obviously these are on the soldered on the board) but I think the SSD is can be easily replaced.

Also looks like GT, that is NVIDA ? Apples going back to NVIDA chipsets ?

Here's a close up of the SSD board from Apple's image of the internals:

Looks like it's a slightly different shape (wider and shorter) than the one in the Air, but the same connector. OWC will probably have aftermarket options in the near future.

Is it a good time to get a 13 inch?

Hey guys,

With the release of the new 15 inch retina Macbook Pro´s, I’m wondering if a 13 inch model will be introduced soon. I was planning to get a 13 inch in October (Black Friday Discount ), but now that i see that they didn´t upgraded the screen resolution or redesign it I started doubting if it maybe i should wait until they release a 13 inch one.

I’m also considering a 13 inch Air (100 bucks price drop) because at this point it seem that the "only" difference between the Air, and a 13 inch retina will be the screen resolution. Maybe the Airs will get the Retina screen upgrade option later this year?

I’ll be using it for school, some video editing and light gaming. And I don´t plan to get a new one after this one in at least 3-4 years and i know that the Air is not user upgradable, so that is a con

So what do you recommend me to do?

BTW: Sorry for my bad English... not my native language

I'm thinking the entry level Retina MBP is the best deal right now. It's the next generation, very thin, still very powerful, and with education pricing it's (almost) affordable. For someone who doesn't absolutely NEED more than 256 GB of space, this machine seems perfect.
I hope I'm making the right choice!

Im in same shoes as you are, im waiting till they upgrade the 13 inch with retina..

I think it will happen in august.

Having a tough time deciding on which retina model to order:

  • I was planning on ordering the base but upgrading the storage to 512GB, however that is not a BTO option. The only way to get the increased storage i to order the high end model. I have a 500GB hard drive now (350G utilized), linked to a Pegasus R6. I could migrate more onto the Pegasus, but I like the idea of having more storage. Also in the very near future the price of flash memory will drop and 256GB might not be as strong for future resale.
  • I am also debating the 16GB RAM. I am a heavy Aperture and Photoshop user, and saw a noticeable performance jump from 4GB to 8GB on my early 2011 MBP. Wondering is I will get anything incremental from the 16GB.

Awww, who am I kidding. I know I will pull the trigger on both upgrades ($2,759US with my corporate discount), but I need to ruminate over it for awhile.

Yep, I hit the order button! My future proof and badass MBP is on the way...

I think it's good. People who need the optical drive can purchase the 13/15" old gen MBPs while the people that doesn't can get the 15" thinner Pro.

I was gonna say same ..... being a Retina display, wouldn't this tax the video ... which is why dedicated would be better for external use?

Your absolutely right on that one... Have you seen the price of the 512Gig ?

Ridiculous. External hard drive would be cheaper.

Hmm. So on the retina there is no optical drive. Also why would they solder on the ram :(
Is 8GB enough for programs like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere and After Effects? Programs of that nature?

And after going through my stuff (Im on windows) it looks like 256GB will be plenty for me :)

One question, is there any major difference between 2.3GHz, 2.6 and 2.7?

If anyone knows thanks.

diablo III performance on new mbp with retina?

anybody already able to predict how diablo III will run on the new mbp with retina and maxed out settings?

Just purchased new retina MacBook pro with extra ram. Was so tempted with extra storage but hard to justify cost as will use external hard drive. This is my first ever mac. Do you get a mouse with it? I will be using it for photo editing so definitely need one.

Not shure if i "think" it will happen, as much as i hope so!

Still very confused:confused::confused:

Good choice... and no you don´t get a mouse with it, that will cost you and extra $70

What is turbo boost?

It's been a feature of the Intel processors for the last couple of generations. Basically it lets the processor dynamically increase the clock speed if you're only using one or two cores.

For example in the base retina MBP, the processor runs at up to 2.3Ghz if you are loading down all four cores with various applications (or a single application that can take advantage of multiple cores), or it can run at up to 3.3Ghz if you are using an application that only uses a single processor core.

I am also wondering if since it's Retina it will run games and videos slower especially with just 1GB of dedicated graphics ram...
However, if they demonstrated Diablo III on the retina mac, I presume it will run great.
