Thanks to both of you for taking the time to reply.

My question was more about the process involved in actually updating the Macbook Pro from Lion to Mountain Lion. Is it easy to do, or can you screw it up if you make a mistake?

Thanks

I did the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion through the App Store. If I remember correctly, it suggested that I back up my data before starting the process. I never did run into any issues during the upgrade process and it took around an hour to complete the upgrade.

Heh... I just joined today and I didn't even realize the new MBPs were announced today...:p

After looking at the specs on the Apple website, I'm not sure what to think other than it looks like a bigger and more fully-featured Air (i.e. a bit too thin for me). I was expecting the ODD to be removed, and slightly expecting Flash or SSD for storage medium... but it's strange to actually SEE that now in a real MBP.

edit: Whee! Started a new page!! :D

Ohh, sorry about that. Anyways, it was extremely easy; it was systematic and you were guided through the whole process. You would really have to go out of your way to mess it up, haha. Just be sure to backup your data on an external hard drive before starting the process.

SSD and Flash Drive are the same thing. The retina MBP uses a solid state drive in a semi-proprietary format. This is very similar to the SSD in the Macbook Air.

You can't replace it with a standard 2.5" SSD from Samsung for example. There isn't physical room for it in the case and the connector is different.

You can buy replacement SSDs from the Air from OWC:

I would guess that they will have a version that works with the Retina Macbook Pro in the near future.
But at that price point, is it even worth doing? At $760/$795, you might as well just get the high end model ($600 and you get a faster processor).

Hey guys. 1st post here :)

I'm looking at getting the 15" Macbook Pro (non retina) and wondered about the higher res displays you can upgrade to. Is the £75 extra worth it? Also what are the downsides of getting the anti glare over the glossy?

I can get discount through my work and I am looking at the 15" 2.3GHz quad core i7 version. With the upgraded screen it will cost £1484.40. I can get 8GB (2x4GB) RAM upgrade from Crucial for £35.

At first I thought the new Retina Mac was expensive but isn't the old model MacBook Pro with SSD equivalent and memory bump to 8Gb more expensive than the new Retina MacBook Pro.

I'm sorely tempted and I can get approximately £150 off the price with benefit scheme at work, but I've never paid anything like £1650 for a laptop. My last one the original Intel Macbook was £800 and lasted 6 years of continuous use.

Decisions, decisions

Any advice?

Thanks for the explanation.

If I waited to buy until Mountain Lion was released would I get a Macbook loaded with M.L. ,or loaded with Lion and have the same download through the App Store?

The MBP 13" is rumored to be getting a redesign in August so not the best way to go unless you need the ODD and ethernet without an adapter. Refurb or wait is my recommendation.

I'm thinking of getting the new 13'' MBP. I've been waiting for this update to replace my (very much dying) 6 year old Dell laptop. I'm a bit disappointed that the 13'' didn't have too much of an upgrade but I just can't really wait until August. My question: if Apple does decide to release a retina 13'' in August, what price point do you think it will come in at? I am tempted to just go with the current 13'' because it still comes in at a very nice $1099 (with educational discount). Whereas I think the redesigned retina 13'' will likely come in more on the expensive side, no?

If it follows the same price structure as the new 15" retina ($2199) and non-retina ($1799) released today - the new 13" retina should be priced at $1599 with a non-retina available for $1199.

Gosh, if I wait I'll never edit those vids. I'm going for a 15" refurb and try to forget about Macs for a while. Thanks for the advice!

Upgrade able?

Are the spec bumped MBP's (non-retina) able to be user upgraded in terms of RAM and SSD? Didn't see anyone mention it.

Looking for an answer to this as well, is there anything definitive yet?

Also anxious to know about this. Hopefully they're still upgradable... I'll check back in about a week.

Can someone tell me if the chipset on the i7 (retina macbook pro) have hyper threading like the Mac Pro or top end iMac? I wanted to know if Quad CPU 4 + Virtual core 4 = 8. Thanks.

Looks like I'm not getting mine anytime soon.

I'm so jealous of the 2012 macbook update :(
I got a high-end 2011 macbook pro in January, and really think I should have waited for this.
I love the thinner design, but overall, do you think the cpu/gpu/retina display upgrades are that drastic of a change to warrant a purchase?
Or should I just chill and wait a couple years... :(

It's not like your machine is suddenly outdated and useless. The CPU/GPU bump probably isn't significant enough for you to see the difference anyway. As for retina, I consider it one of those luxury options on cars like heated seats or built-in GPS that isn't necessary, just nice to have. If I had the money to burn, sure I'd get it, but quite frankly I don't think it's as big of a deal as everyone is making it out to be and personally I'm opting for the old chassis MBP.

I just wanted to mention that I called a few minutes ago and asked if I changed my order (Base 15 inch Retina) from home shipping to personal pickup would it be faster. They lady was extremely nice and said no but then bumped me up from standard to next day shipping without any charge. At the earliest it will be at my doorstep on the 19th verses the 21st. I'm sure its worth a shot if any of you can't wait
