How do you know it will be October? I'll crap my pants if you're right!

Because the last redesign was October 2008.

The best thing would be the removal of the ODD - taken it's place a better heatsink/fan operation for cooler operating temperatures, AND a way bigger battery. Imagine using that 1/3 of the current size for a 1/3 increase in battery capacity.

Its funny how people keep saying make it thinner. The MBP is already thinner, better built and better looking then most laptops on the market. I say keep the design remove the ODD, add a bigger battery, Ivy bridge, better graphics, SSD, 3 or 4 USB 3.0 ports, thunderbolt and then separate audio in and out ports on the 13" version.

Apple redesigns their iMacs and Macbook Pros every 8-10 months. Which in my opinion isn't really a good thing. I wouldn't want my $1000+ laptop to become obsolete in under a YEAR. --_-- Apple should keep it according to their iOS yearly update timeline.

For some reason, I highly doubt it'll be in 2011, I see 2012 as the year of the redesign.

I believe that they will keep Optical Drive.

If they remove optical drive from 13 inch MBP, then there is no way of distinguish between 13 MBP and 13 MBA.

Optical drive is still being used and it will be for a while.

I expect...

SSD+ HDD
Higher resolution on all 13/15/17 inch models.
Thinner bezel
Lighter weight
Thinner design

Pro users are heavy users who are hungry for power and ports. Apple will expand to include USB 3.0 and offer more ports.

I don't think they'll remove the optical drive yet. That's the main thing separating the Air/Pro line.

Ok so clearly I'm a little late in responding to this thread, but here's my 2c:

Late 2011 redesign:
- ivy bridge guts (I don't see any possibility of a switch to ARM processors)
- no ODD
- All SSD
- 2 Thunderbolt ports, 1x USB 2.0, 1x Firewire 800, HDMI out (maybe?)

notable omissions:
- USB 3.0 - Apple already put their money (literally) on thunderbolt, they're not going to pay to use 3.0 too.
- Ethernet port (irrelevant with thunderbolt)
- MiniDisplayPort (irrelevant with/same thing as thunderbolt)
- enhanced cooling system (really? since when has apple cared about keeping things cool? come on, guys)

wild hopes:
- 2 HD facetime cameras [iPad 3D anyone?]
- wireless power
- even larger touchpad (I would love to see a freaking huge touchpad with tons of gesture-based features in Lion, but how much larger can they make it before typing becomes a pain in the ass?
- slightly less stupid name for a technological development as important as "Thunderbolt"

in terms of design:
- Reduced bezel around screen
- elimination of "matte" option (I don't want this to happen, but it probably will)
- black liquidmetal enclosure, ~30% thinner than current gen, not tapered

If the last part of this prediction is true, they're going to have to merge the MBP and MBA lines, and probably just have 11-17 inch options on the MBP, since the 13" MBP will be sexier and thinner than the MBA anyway.

the only thing that really worries me about this is (back to heat issues) that BMG, like whatever liquidmetal product will be used for the case, generally don't conduct heat as well as crystalline metals (i.e. the aluminum casing of my current MBP). I guess the macbook's polycarbonate enclosure didn't cause any problems... still it would suck if these sleek new macs had to constantly underclock or even worse, heatstroke out.

looking forward to the inevitable facepalm in october when none of this is actually true.

You're wrong.

-There won't be a late 2011 redesign. Ivy Bridge isn't due till Q1/Q2 2012.
-SSDs are still a premium to have as the sole storage option in a MBP.
-USB 3.0 WILL come with Ivy Bridge updates.
-There's no way Ethernet will go away on a Pro machine
-Curious...if you yank MDP how will the laptop connect to external displays?
-2 Cameras on a laptop is unlikely. If you want that feature get an iPhone/iPad
-No reason to remove AG option, we're paying for it so it's no extra cost to them

- Fine, Sandy Bridge + Redesign in October, Ivy refresh in Q3 2012.
- Thunderbolt is basically a MDP, in fact, you can connect two monitors with the same thunderbolt port, so there's no need to have them both.
- the two cameras are both front facing. That's why they are in the "wild hopes section - 3D FaceTime! Just like Avatar!
- I hope the AG doesn't go away.
- Thunderbolt can replace ethernet too, and the only thing apple loves more than making amazing computers is selling small, white adapters.

Is it possible to see the Case Redesign before Ivy Bridge? I know it sounds crazy ... but I'm not sure why people are assuming that both will come at the same time.

I don't know much about how the industrial design process works for these kinds of things, but if Apple is indeed working on a redesign, I imagine they are probably working with Sandy Bridge processors for the prototype designs ... Why not release the case redesign with some better spec'ed Sandy Bridge processors? And then once Ivy Bridge hits, they can do a refresh ...

Zero chance.

Since Ivy Bridge is supposed to have USB 3.0 support, is there any chance ivy bridge macbooks may NOT have USB 3.0 in favor of Thunderbolt?

I understand the Ivy Bridge will integrate support for USB but Thunderbolt is Intel's baby, not USB - Thunderbolt has to be there. Is it possible 3.0 integration is for use in non-Mac systems?

Does Intel basically force apple to include USB 3.0 on the chips or can apple somehow modify the chip or request USB 2.0?
https://www.macrumors.com/2010/10/31/steve-jobs-usb-3-not-taking-off-at-this-time/

Intel supports it, which means it no longer requires an extra controller, so Apple's going to use it.

Care to elaborate why you think so?
Because Apple will do the same thing they did last year with Arrandale. Intel will release barely higher clocked processors and Apple will just offer a build to order option. Apple's refreshes post Core 2 Duo era have always been in tandem with Intel's next generation processor releases.

-There's no need to remove it either. Both the MDP and Thunderbolt are integrated into the same port...so why yank MDP portion and leave Thunderbolt when there is already an integration. In addition to the fact that existing displays support DP/MDP not Thunderbolt.

-Thunderbolt replace Ethernet? ALL the routers out there (including Apple's) have Ethernet ports.

I see a lot of wishful thinking of a MBP being re-designed this year. More than likely it will be 2012. But like I said, it's wishful thinking. :D
