I'm going to say I disagree. Apple learned few years back that doing a software and hardware rollouts at the same time is not a good thing. New iPhone + iOS + mobile me + mac hardware... it was not pretty and Steve was pissed. That's just my two cents.

Hmmm I could see this being a good point. If they bring out a redesigned MBP as well as a newish OS, now they might have to deal with potential design problems as well as software problems.

It would be like if the iPhone 4 not only had the death grip "issue" but there was also some problem with a new iOS released at the same time.

They could always get the computers out early, and offer a free Mountain Lion upgrade in the summer.

that sounds bad too, manipulation! :p you're both right though but both do sound a little bad.

I see your point, but why not put a better camera or the same camera in the ipod as the iphone? this is just an example.

apple do many things that are profitable and the idea of keeping loyal customers...well thats the closed enviroment they stick you in. Their designs are pretty good but they can offer more bang for the buck IMO

I sort of agree with you as what you are saying makes sense. Of course any company can always go a little further to push the limit beyond what it was, or up the bar. And Apple has done this many of times. With that said, there are always other things we want. At least for the things I need a phone and a laptop for, the iPhone 4S and 2011 MacBook Pro have done a better job than any other phone/laptop combo. While Apple can always up the ante, what they current have does an excellent job IMO and that is why I am okay with paying the more expensive price for their products.

If I could see Apple make anything a priority, it would be them entering the enterprise business-class market, by offering a lower-cost Mac and management-based software solutions. As of now, Microsoft dominates that field and Apple doesn't really have much in the way of software/hardware for it. The Xserve or whatever it was seemed to start moving in that direction, and then it was discontinued. I was talking about this with a friend at a party tonite. We feel that Apple could potentially reach new markets by catering to the enterprise users.

Buy now, or wait?

I have currently got a Pre October 2009 MacBook (just before the glass touchpad came out), and it's starting to hit it's twilight days, and the battery is almost non-existent. I am only a student, and use it mainly for word processing, photoshop (occasionally), web browsing (lots of..), and the occasional game (Football Manager).

I am very inpatient, and not entirely sure whether to buy a 13inch MBP now, or wait intill post June, when the MBP is likely to be refreshed. I do like to have a OOD and don't really think that the MBP needs to be much thinner, it's already pretty thin! Although the USB 3.0 would be good, but not exactly vital, and if the screen was dramatically improved then that would be good, but will they even improve the 13inch? Is there a big chance that the 13inch could be dis-contiuned?

I have had a look at the MacBook Air, and the SSD is awesome, but the memory size is too small, and even the most expensive model at 256gb is probably not going to be enough 2/3 years down the line.

What do you all think? Wait intill June/July, or buy a MBP now? Will there be that MUCH difference?

Thanks in advance (I'm so tempted to go and purchase a MBP now, ahh)

I think just waiting will be your best bet either way. When the 2012 model comes out and you don't like it, spring for the 2011 13. Since there will be a new gen, the 2011 13 will be at a discount (predecessor.) This would put more money back into your pocket to give it even better specs.
Hope this helped

Probably just conjecture but they say that people have found icon sets with double the resolution of the usual ones. They reckon, therefore, that this signifies at least a change in displays for the machines if not retina-like displays.

Personally I do find it difficult to believe still. I think such screens would severly increase the price of the laptops.

This is not very conclusive though, it could just mean Apple is smart enough to prepare and get ready for the fact higher res screen will be standard in a timewise undecided future.

My perfect MBP

This is my opinion how should Macbook Pros look like in 2012.

Which brings me back to my original post in this thread which wasn't actually about the merits of the ODD or whether Apple would remove it or not - it was that *if* Apple decides to removed the ODD, I actually think it's quite possible see a sudden uptick in demand for the 2011 models, and a subsequent *increase* in price, instead.

I know you aren't showing the BTO options, but I like where this is going. I'd be interested to see what the price upgrades will be for the BTO options. I'd be all over a BTO option for a high-res screen on the 15"; 3360x2100. And a boot SSD drive.
Based on today's BTO prices:
+$150 for the 3360x2100 high-res-retina
+$600 for a 256gig SSD

With a Retina display in the iPhone as well as the new iPad Apple would be smart to look at pushing for Retina displays in their MacBook Pro line to help steal more market share from PC laptop manufacturers that are releasing a number of competitive options this year. And with a hopeful redesign this year to the MBP line it doesn't honestly make sense for them to continue producing high-end laptops with lower resolution displays than their iPad.

It is becoming very popular in all technology devices. TVs, computers, phones and every screen out there. The more they produce it the cheaper it will become.

Payment is pending apple :D (I really hope they don't skimp when it comes to the new MBPs)

From what Ive been able to read and interpret in the matter, a 15-17 inch retina screen would be too costly. I doubt apple are interested in severly raising prices, or severly cutting profits which should be the two options if large retina screens are in fact still so expensive. There might be an retina upgrade version like with SSD's but Im guessing like SSD's apple will charge handsomely for them. Anyhow all is just speculation.

Personally I wouldnt mind seeing 1680x1050 becoming the standard for a 15" but Im not sure I want/need more than that. Im wondering/worried how it would affect game performance if youre supposed to play in the retina resolutions. Or how games who cant play with those high resolutions will look because of it. (yes I know macbook pros and games dont mix well but Im getting it anyway)

I would like a 1920x1200 screen on a 15. I think that would be perfect. I would run games at 1680x1050, though.

The iPad 3 with a 9.7" 2048x1536 Retina display has a production cost estimated of only around $310 so with the price of a Macbook Pro I don't think it's that much of a stretch to think Apple could easily push for a 2880x1800 15" which is what is being rumored. Especially with PC competitors like ASUS announcing high resolution Ultrabooks coming.

So 2 weeks until the 8th of April and this is when Ivy Bridge is out, correct?

I don't think you'll see anything yet. If the rumors of a redesign come true (note there's no real confirmation) that alone could push it back slightly if they encounter problems. Apple runs into problems too. You just don't hear about them because they're secretive.

I believe a lot of those things are possible. What I don't see happening is the high-end 13" having more RAM and a larger HDD than the low-end 15". Maybe the GT 650M also gets included and the differentiation goes by VRAM (1 GB for low-end 15" and 2 GB for high-end 15" and 17" or DDR3 vs. GDDR5).
It also depends how nVidia is selling these things, but we could see the GTX 660M inside the 17" (since it's basically an overclocked GT 650M GDDR5).

Don't get me wrong, but I hope the 15" & 17" get at least the GTX 660 (Kepler) or either the Fermi GTX 670M or the GTX 675M.

The GTX 660M is the same GPU as the GT 650M GDDR5 with higher clocks. If nVidia is going to charge them more for that, I don't see Apple paying for it.
The GTX 670M (GTX 570M overclocked rebadge) and GTX 675M (GTX 580M rebadge) are out of the question. They consume a lot of power and get very hot. They're pricier and not appropiate for the MBP enclosure.

I think Apple could very well offer a SSD + HDD combo in the new MBP. They already offer this in the iMac.

I was under the impression that the new line of Kepler GPUs have a 28nm architecture, and were more power efficient than previous GPUs.
