I was under the impression that the new line of Kepler GPUs have a 28nm architecture, and were more power efficient than previous GPUs.

Yes. But AFAIK the Kepler ones are just the: GT 640M, GT 650M and the GTX 660M. The 670M and 675M are 40nm.

Probably means nothing but, futureshop in Canada is have a sale on the Current Macbook pros.

It may be a coincident or may be not.

Even GT640M is about 10-20% powerfull than 6770m in recent macbook line. :) With its low power consumption would be great for smaller macbooks. Maybe even 13inch. :D
650 or 660 eould be great for 15 and 17 inch. We can only hope apple. :apple:

Do you have a source for this rather short concise claim? :)

The original launch date for Ivy Bridge was to be April 8th, but that has had to be adjusted, not least because of surplus stocks of Sandy Bridge wafers that need to be used up. It seems that the 7 series desktop chipsets - Z77, Z75, H77 and B75 - will be available from retailers on April 8, but Ivy Bridge processors will start rolling out 3 weeks later, on April 29.

Thanks alot. I agree its weird. I did google but top matches was all crap for me.

or just google it...

i was surprised that here in macbook pro forum this info isnt well know already, we on imac forum knew this for ages :D

Unfortunately those are all Desktop CPUs. Mobile CPUs never really make it to retail, so it's more important when they start shipping them to Foxconn, and how long Foxconn needs to assemble a sufficient amount of MBPs.
Then there are other possible sources of delay, e.g. waiting for GPUs, retina displays, thinner unibodys, etc.

HP at some point claimed that they would ship Ivy equipped notebooks on April 8.

I noticed that too. Im still hoping for a yummy delivery at the 8th of april. Problem is though, Im based in Sweden, so Im guessing you americans will have first pick. Grr.

who said anything about retail?

those are both mobile and desktop cpus (according to various rumors), i think for the first time launched together (marks intel effort in mobile)

april 29th is the day nda allows all the oems to release their products, all the reviewers to release reviews etc. retail availability will probably be scarce in the beginning, although intel claims that its building 50% more cpus this time in the first months as opposed to sandy bridge

but make no mistake, apple already builds imacs and macbook pros, and it wouldnt come as a surprise if they actually do release them earlier, nor it would be the first time.

but for you guys here, i think more important date is june 3rd because of the dual core ivy bridge, unless you think 13'' macbook pro will come with quad core standard

Pretty sure those who are waiting for the 13" like I am will have to wait until June 3rd. I find it highly unlikely for Apple to put a quad core in their 13 inchers in their refresh. Guess the wait for a couple weeks will have to be at least 2 more months... lol *sigh*

But I guess it will be in sync with mountain lion.

honestly i don't see the reason for the 13inch mbp anymore, UNLESS it shipped with quad core. honestly there is VERY little difference in the mbp 13 and mba 13, without the odd it would just be the difference in hdd space.

i could see apple keeping the mbp line with just a 15 and 17inch models, and the mba line with 11, 13, and the addition of the 15inch.

The mbp's ( in my opinion ) arnt going to be completely overhauled, maybe a cm or 2 smaller, no odd POSSIBILY unlikey, retina ~ 200ish ppi.
Bigest separater will be the graphics in the 15 and 17inch models, hopefully we will see some more options in this category. wouldn't mind tossing in a few more hundo's for a beefy gaming machine.

my 0.02$

the transition to thinner laptops shall begin with the 13inch.

I'm intrigued by a MacBook Air SSD form-factor in an affordable size for boot and a 1TB drive for storage. I think this will easily be achieved in 15 inches. And of course a 28 nm GPU.

I tend to agree.

If they remove the DVD and the HD in the 2012 MBP 13" (as it's been rumored), and they offer a 8gb Ram upgrade for the MBA 13" (as it's been rumored), the line between the MBP 13" the MBA 13" will be too thin so I wouldn't be surprised if they merge them.

Nah. i have a feeling Apple will extend the Air and Pro distance again by putting a quad on the 13" Pro and refreshing it with the 15”. Apple has never refreshed it's Pro line with only the 15" and nothing else. Won't make sense. The June dual cores will be for the Airs as vehicles for Mountain Lion and we will see a Pro refresh of both 13" and 15" very soon. Hopefully the 13” Pros will sport Kepler. The 17” will follow in a few weeks if we'll have a redesign.

My Opinion

This is my opinion how should Macbook Pros look like in 2012.
:apple: Just my own requirement and ideas. Nothing from apple

1) I would like to see the base resolution for the 13" MBP rise from 1280x800 to 1440x900 and the 15" to go to 1680x1050. The 17" went from 1680x1050 default to 1920x1200 default in 2008, and the MacBoo Pro has defaulted to 1440x900 since 2006. If there is indeed an aesthetic refresh, this could be a great time to bump these specs. On that note, I'd love a 2560x1600 BTO option on the 17", which might be possible if it does not go retina.

2) It would be surprising for Apple to move to retina display-quality displays right now. Though it may be technically possible and economically feasible, there have been no suggestions from manufacturing chains that this is impending. And I agree that the costs - though perhaps manageable - would cut into Apple's margin enough that it would give them pause.

3) I think it unlikely that the 13" MBP will get a dedicated GPU (that being said, I would love for it to have one; I just think Apple will not include one). Precedence has recently been that of an IGP in 13" models. And if that's the case, I highly doubt that the 13" will go retina (see above).

4) Blade SSDs! It would be excellent if Apple somehow incorporated blade SSDs into their lineup, which would allow a secondary 2.5" HDD in a form factor as small even as the 13". How this would work technically or in marketing is beyond my initial consideration, but the option itself would be fantastic.

15" already has a BTO option for 1680 x 1050.

So, with the processors being released on April 29th (Quad-Core that is) do you think Apple will update the MacBook pro line first, and then the MacBook Air/Potentially MBP 13 (due to their Dual-Core needs) after when their processors come out in June, or do you think Apple will update them all at once in June once all the processors are readily available?

:apple:

No one really knows, but I'm sure lots of people are hoping the quad-core using MBP's will be out as soon as IB is available for them.
