I would love to see apple make significantly greater options for the 17inch, it usually has the same options as the 15inch yet if they remain the same form factor as each other there should be extra room for some sweet extras, Or at least some good cooling :)

A 13" MBP provides:
Sandy Bridge: Up to 16 GB RAM.
Ivy Bridge: Up to 32 GB RAM.
Replaceable HDD/SSD up to 1 TB
...and much more.

id say the vast majority is not concerned with all of this, number one reason why the cheaper/smaller end laptops are apples most profitable.
but hey if they have room why not?

The current matte screen of the 15" MBP is top.

Hopefully, this will not be dumbed down during the redesign. I don't want to see a lesser display (like in the 13" MBA line) on a 15" MBP.

Generally I prefer processing power, great screen, and heat performance to s sleeker design that sacrifices even the smallest amount on these three points.

If Apple can pull it off to have the same quality screen, processing power and heat control on the redesign, then, of course, I look forward to it.

It just depends on who Apple thinks is going to buy the 15" MBP: fun people or power users.

Better not disappoint the power users.

There will be a 15" MBA eventually.

Dream-bookpro :)

here is what i think:

new design
Nvidia Keplar Gtx 660m (1GB vram, maybe 2GB?):D
intel core i7 3xxxQM quad core 2.4-2.7Ghz:D
no disc-drice:confused:
1TB 7200RPM HDD:rolleyes:
128GB SSD(or smaller, like 20GB since lion uses about 6~)
same screen(or rumors point at "retina" for macbookpros?):(
1080p camera:D
battery(IDC, i always have my stuff plugged in anyways):D

my wishes:
Siri(how cool would that be!)
maybe other stuff, idk

the 660m is definitely reasonable, since its cooler because of keplar, and its just the mid-tier card apple always uses, but if they use it, the MBP would be a beast gaming laptop(from many other point-of-views of laptops)

any other ideas? seem reasonable?

The 560m has a TDP of 75W. Even if they were to cut it in half, which won't happen, it would still use too much power and produce too much heat for the MBP.
Just as a reference, the desktop Kepler (680) uses roughly 20% less power than the previous (580) model.

I expect you will be severely disappointed come refresh time.

Alot of people expect a small upgrade, and other people believe that since theres a new processor the upgrade will be more remarkable. Im not sure the upgrades will be all that remarkable, feels like somewhere in that mix there is a cost/profit speedbump that surely apple wont be willing to pass with even the appropriate speed. :p

However, a slight frequency bump would be appreciated, for example todays 2.2 would be 2.4-2.5 Im hoping for atleast 1GB Vram aswell, that would be comfortable. Like several people have posted, the option to have a regular disk drive inserted in combination with the flash stick solution from air would be absolutely awesome. Other than that, having 1680 as the standard resolution shouldnt be too much to ask. Also 8GB of ram om 15" and up should be standard, seems like very few people settle for less.

Not really. They're already putting the 660m into 15" laptops made by Lenovo so I see no reason Apple engineers can't get that same chip to work in a 15" or 17" laptop.

The current 6770m Radeon has a TPU in the neighborhood of 50 watts so I don't really see why anything in that neighborhood is a problem.

Rather than shrink the MBP, the design should stay the same size and get rid of the ODD so to allow more room for cooling of the discrete GPU and larger battery.

It's clear that Apple is not going to release a new MBP with the old Radeon, Kepler is the next logical step forward. Honestly it seems a foregone conclusion that a next-gen GPU will be put into it.

Not cool at all. In fact if they add such a cr*p feature I might not buy the refreshed MBP. Unless it has a high res screen.

Am I alone in thinking Siri is a tragically sad gimmick?

If you don't like it, just don't use it. Doesn't seem any harm to me putting in there. Not that I'd ever use it.

15" already has a BTO option for 1680 x 1050.

I know. I would like the base option to go to 1680x1050, and the BTO option to be 1920x1200.

The example of the 17" was to illustrate that the Macbook Pro line has seen upgrades in the base resolutions within the last half-decade, and that in my opinion it is beyond time for another (trickling down from 17" to 15" and 13").

It is great for certain tasks, such as setting an alarm, or a timer, sending a quick message to someone when you are driving.

In fact driving is where it is best. I was coming home late one night from an unfamiliar area and was totally confused. I just told Siri to take me home and up popped the maps app, with my route highlighted and ready to start. That is what sold me on it as a feature.

Am I alone in thinking Siri is a tragically sad gimmick?

I use it all the time and think it's a great feature. I use it mainly when I'm driving for things like getting directions, finding the nearest whatever, setting reminders to pick up milk on the way home from work, etc. Not a sad gimmick at all.

Now having Siri on a Macbook... not so sure about that. I'd never use it.

Yes, and Alienware and Sager put dual GPUs in some of their machines. That doesn't mean Apple will try to do the same

I highly doubt that it has a higher TDP than the i7 quad core.
Based on wikipedia data for the 65XXm and 68XXm series cards I would assume the TDP is in the mid 30s, but I don't have a way to confirm this, and the source of the wikipedia information is also unclear.

Kepler seems the obvious choice over the AMD 7XXXm series. But there are also these rumors that suggest that Apple drops the discrete GPU from low end MBPs (i.e. 15'' base model?, 13''?), due to a failure of Nvidia to deliver enough Keplers.

No way the new laptops will have a "retina" screen this soon. Apple will market this new laptop as Ivy Bridge + thinner design and then spread the real upgrades over the next 4 years. Retina display is probably another year or two away. I bet they won't even make 1680 the default res (an absolute crime for the price of the laptop) on the 15". SSD will not be standard and they won't give you an extra HDD in place of the OOD for free. If anything, it will cost an arm and a leg for that option this first go around, with that type of setup becoming standard a few years from now. I think the GPU updates are probably the most intriguing out of everything for the upcoming release.

yeah true, ahh well. I've been waiting for a 15 or 17" 2012 model and I'm going to buy which-ever one comes out first.

But why aren't the rumors even mentioning the 17"?

Well you'll be getting a 15" then. The 17" isn't mentioned because most likely last go around with a redesign it came out many months later. It is a low demand model compared to the 13" and 15".

good!

with digitimes reporting that Apple is ramping up production of the 15" in April and the 13" only in June.

how likely is it that we'll get to see the 15" first, or are they going to launch both the models at the same time?

looks like i have to wait till June/July for my first MBP 13". :(

Arghhhhhh looking at the Ivy Bridge chart of quads coming for next month, the lack of 35w QM confirms that we won't be seeing a 13" refresh next month. Looks like we'll only be seeing the 15" (and perhaps with the 17") with IB and Kepler before summer.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if Apple will be able to squeeze in a 45w quad in the 13" unless the new IB chips are as cool as ice.

I don't think they're going to just let 15s sit in a warehouse for two months. I for one, am happy, since the 15 is what I'm going for.

Nope. It's coming :). Be pleasantly surprised for a 15“ with 3820QM i7 2.7 GHz + GeForce GT 650M next month.

No sign of a 13" though. :(

well i guess that's only logical.

good for you then! still hoping for a miracle that they'll somehow manage to release the 13" sooner.

Come to think of it, I didn't see the 35W QM in the chart for the June release either. Either they scrapped that chip completely, or it got left out from the two charts. Since April will release the quad-core chips, there's still hope. I'm personally waiting on a new 13" to consolidate my old setup (17" MBP + 11" MBA) to a much simpler 13" MBP + 27" ATD.

I surely do hope so. I'm going to buy the 15" anyway but remission of a 13" Pro or its being released close or side by side with the Airs doesn't bode well for the Pro machines in the future. I guess you can say I'm one of the minority who is not with the "sleeker form factor at the expense of performance" camp. On the plus side, I do hope the lack of a 13" Pro next to the 15" might lead the path for a competitive priced 15".
