I don't see people carry MacBooks anymore. They carry iPads, proudly :)
...

I guess it depends on where you see people. In a cafe I frequent, almost every table is occupied with Apple laptops of one sort or another. I wouldn't dare bring in my HP ;) The only time I saw someone use an iPad there was me. Of course, this is in Palo Alto, CA, not your ordinary city.

I'm tempted to just buy one now as in 8 months or so another MBP refresh will be on the horizon. But I've waited this long so what's another couple of weeks?

True. I got an update from Intel NDA :

I also read this : http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-57412840-64/first-intel-ivy-bridge-launch-expected-on-april-23/

Most upcoming *ultrabooks* expected for 23 april will have an NVIDIA GPU. So, this should be 15" notebook with Quad Core Ivy Bridge 22 nm and GeForce Kepler 28 nm. MacBook Pro 15" also seems to be expected those days and should be slimmer. So slimmer means new design or at least an updated design.

According to me, MacBook Pro 15" can be launch on 24 april witch is a tuesday, an Apple favorite day.

I'm not up to date on all the newer graphics cards, but are these GeForce Kepler chips promising? I'm curious as to what the graphics boost will be between these new 15" MBPs and the current 15" MBPs with the 6770M w/ 1GB

For the most part, the nVidia 600's mobile chips are just rebranded 500 chips based on Fermi. Kinda disappointing to be honest.

According to 3D Mark 2011 scores I have collected :
GeForce GT 640m (Kepler) : 1785
Radeon HD 6770m : 1470
GeForce GT 555m : 1439
Radeon HD 6750m : 1319

I expect MacBook Pro 2012 to have GeForce GT 640m (perhaps with lower clock freq like past GeForce GT 330m or GeForce GT 640M LE ) so about 10 to 20% faster than current Radeon HD 6770m.

That'd be fine by me! Less power, less heat, moderate performance gains and a new chassis. Just tell me where to sign! :D

"No word yet from Apple if it will release a new MacBook Air or Pro this year, but multiple rumors suggest that the Cupertino, California-based computer and smartphone maker will introduce its 2012 laptop lineup shortly after the release of the new Mac OS X Mountain Lion, the 10.8, the latest and “greatest” version of the Mac operating system to date.*Last year, Apple retailed the Mac OS X Lion first before introducing the late 2011 Air and Pro models."

We could be waiting a while.

MacBook pros came out in February last year. Well before lion. Usually the late versions come....well, late in the year. But they usually have two "releases" of MacBooks a year. At least for the pro. They aren't going to wait for late summer to release new notebooks. It would only hurt their earnings.

I saw this on Popherald...From what I've read on their site, I don't think they have anymore info than what we know from rumor sites considering they just seem to re-blog what other sites say.

This has no credibility at all.

1. The author seems to put a lot a doubt about if Apple will refresh their MBP/MBA lines this year. They always did since those laptops exist, so what makes him believe this year would be different? He seems uninformed and unaware that Apple waits for Intel to release new CPUs for a lot of their refresh.

2. Multiple rumors suggest that they will introduce their laptop lineup after Mountain Lion? What are those rumors? Of course it's a possibility, but no rumor pretending that has reached any popular tech/apple blog.

3. There is no such thing as a Late-2011 MacBook Air.

4. The MacBook Air was released alongside Lion, so the last sentence is not true.

I know the new 17" MacBook Pros launch after the 15". Anyone have an educated guess how MUCH longer? I am about to need one, and I'm trying to hold out....

Thanks!
Apple the mass market consumer company, hyper-focused on iOS ITEMS, has backed away from it's somewhat predictable upgrade cycle when it comes to computers. If not for the fact they sell themselves, bringing tidy profits to Apple, they might force them into obsolescence to prove Jobs was right about Apples Post PC Era.

Traditionally the 17" has been a step child within the MBP class. I know, since I've had a few & waited well after the 15's were released. Much like the extra long wait Mac Pro lovers are having to endure, who knows what the time line will be for the 17". I'm very happy I bought my current 17" in 2010, sans Lion it's a terrific machine.

"I'm a PC, I'm a Mac" Ring a bell?

There's a difference in Jobs mind between the two. Post-PC does not mean Jobs was intending on amputating the entire "Personal Computer" arm of Apple.

15 inch most likely right around the corner.

As I'm sure you all know that most of these large consumer based companies aren't even run by the staff for the most part. Its the share holders game. I predict that within the next month the 15 inch MBP will be released followed by the 13 inch MBP. The 17 inch may become obsolete if not in this year then ones to follow for sure. Apples biggest competitors in the laptop game right now are the new Ultra books almost every major PC company has released at least one model. While i will always be loyal to Apple due to there consumer friendly products i doubt that the investors are gonna want to see this competition further arise. Whether or not the actually appearance of the MBP's change is anyones guess although i do hope so. Finally i would like to put an end to the rumor that the MBP & the MBA families are going to merge. This will never happen at least not for awhile due to the fact that SSD's are way to expensive to put in all models, due to the fact that all MBP users are used to seeing at least 500 gigs in there computers. The price these specs would demand would be a turn off for the average computer user.

Agree.
And as I've pointed out earlier (on this forum), having professional devices is also a matter of prestige and a company's image and that seems rather crucial for Apple.
Another thing is that though MBA's sales continue to grow they are 28% of Apple's laptop sales. Ergo Macbook Pro's are selling well, so that means that there are customers who find them more useful, appealing etc than the MBAs. Although merging those two lines wouldn't mean a 70% drop in laptop sales for Apple, but nevertheless it may end up in some customers turning away - and that would be irrational for any company to do. Setting trends is one thing, but giving up a profitable part of your business for the sake of an "post PC idea" would've been pure nonsense on Apple's side.
In resume: I believe MBP may go the "slim way", but sacrificing CPU, RAM, HDD power and capacity for that sake wouldn't be good for Apple's business in my opinion. I mean all those who've chosen MBP instead of MBA did that for a reason - apparently 70% of Apple laptop consumers prefer the thicker MBP.
PS. I have the impression that MBA is a bit more appealing to first time Apple users. But anyone whom I've known and who's been using MBP for their professional work/duties wants... a MBP after its refresh. If it was any other way they would've bought a MBA the first time around.

I personally don't think we can talk about MBAs and MBPs at the same time relating them as a possible futuristic single product.

Apple is one of the most famous companies for more than one reason and one of those is it's ease of having multiple products with an outstanding performance from the neat iPod Nano to the complex Xserve, now, that being said we should forget about the idea of merging MBA and MBP.

Besides, MBAs have been around for about 4 years now, and we all know they came to take over the place of the MB, and it won't be until an all-new outstanding technology comes around that will be worth enough to make Apple take the risk and merge MBAs and MBPs to create one single mind-blowing portable Mac model.

I have a Macbook Pro and have a 240gb SSD. The benefits of an SSD are just too great for me.
