Sadly they will be focused on helping Seb get the record number of wins in a season. The fact that they have more races every year these days somewhat make it an easier target though. If there was a scenario where he was leading and Webber was second, and he let him through he Seb would win over a lot of fans. Not going to happen though.

Any chance Vettel will let Webber by in these last few races? As long as Vettel didn't make it too obvious maybe had the team's help to make it look like Mark won on strategy, I agree that it would do a lot for Vettel's likeability.

I don't think it will happen though. Vettel wants it all. He wants all the records even though these late season victories are hollow after he's clinched and the other teams have abandoned the year to develop for next year. I also think Vettel has no respect for and does not like Webber. Crushing Webber could be payback for Brazil 2012.

I'd love to see Mark win, but I think I'm right in saying he has never won from pole. Would really like to see Mark get another win before the end of the season.

Vettel is dominant right now. I still think the difference between him and the field is magnified right now by both having a teammate that has admitted several times that he doesn't have the motivation any more and having every other team abandon the season while they actively develop next year's cars much more aggressively than in years past.

Vettel just rubs me the wrong way. What's with the gold helmet with the Roman numeral "IV" and the four stars? Did Schumacher ever do anything like that? I know Senna, Prost, et al. didn't. Yes, we all know he's won four championships in a row. He's like an eight year old little boy that needs to constantly be praised. It's nauseating.

I don't understand that. You are saying that fixing the outcome of a race would make him "more likeable"? I would say it would make him a cheat.

----------

I hope not. These are empty wins that come at the end of a season where every other team has stopped developing their cars due to huge rule changes for next year.

At least when Michael Schumacher won 13 races, twelve of those were in the first thirteen races.

What an abysmal season this has deteriorated into

You should complain about his competitors.

If Vettel hadn't got any points in the last five races, he would still be in the lead. What does that say about Alonso?

...that his car isn't as good as vettel's.?

but vettel is a very good racer.

IMHO - if it were all vettel and nothing to do with the car then webber wouldn't be anywhere at all during qualifying. but he is usually close. that said, who knows if they get the exact same equipment? again, i'm of the mind that THEY do GET the SAME EXACT CAR and that VETTEL really is THAT GOOD.

my 2 cents.

i believe it is up to the rest of the field to find their own "Adrian Newey" and or "Ross Brawn" and get on with making a more competitive car.

I think it would have. At this point it's clear Vettel and RBR are going for an end of the season sweep. Webber is not motivated enough to fight for race wins at this point. So it's a moot point. AFIK, team orders are no longer illegal so it wouldn't be cheating but Webber is so laid back right now it would be way to obvious.

So true. But I do think this year is different because the rest of the field's resources have been going towards 2014. The change to focussing on next year is likely earlier this year because of the rule changes for 2014.

Plus it was obvious that nobody was going to beat finger boy from quite early on. All that is really left for this season is seeing who will race where next year. Sadly this seems to be more about funding than talent. I here Grojan may be released due to a lack of financial support. He has really come on this year and is like a new man. He deserves his place in F1 at a top team.

Alonso would be leading the standings by 10 points if Vettel had failed to score in the last 5 races.

Correction then: If Max Chilton had won the last five races instead of Vettel, with Vettel getting 0 points, he would still be in the lead.

If Max Chilton had won the last 5 races we would have had to have 21 DNF every time!

Kimi Raikonnen to miss rest of 2013 F1 season for back surgery

Not surprised Kimi is not finishing the season with Lotus, and not sure how much I believe that this is totally related to his back surgery. I think we'l see Nico Hulkenberg drive for Lotus this season (he hasn't been paid by Sauber either according to reports) but it does make you wonder whether this is the return of a disinterested Kimi.

I wasn't actually sure if he just parked up in the last race until I saw the replay showing his steering rack was bust.
Not getting paid, knowing you are leaving, no chance of winning along with some back pain I'm sure are all contributing factors. I think we will have to judge Kimi on next year.

aaahh.... all of that is news to me. i didn't notice the steering rack bit...

I hear Lotus tried to get Schumacher out of retirement for the last couple of races whilst Kimi has surgery. Surely this is the ideal time to test a young or potential driver out?
Fortunately he said no.

It would be a horrible time to test out a young driver. They are in a tight manufactures points battle. One place up or down is millions of dollars at stake. They can't take that chance and need to use an experienced driver.

Alas, Heiki's performance in the race gained them nothing directly, but Roman looked better than he has in some time, so perhaps Heiki's influence is indirect. :)

A few comments after the USGP and as the season winds down...

First, the NBC coverage:

* The coverage was fine but "half an inch off" as a friend of mine would say:

* The audio wasn't synced up properly, because either:
- they were on a small delay to catch any Hobbisms or (more likely)
- they didn't adjust to the small but real delay that the world feed has

In either case it was either just annoying or in more than a few cases, a real problem. It was odd to see action on the screen and then 3 seconds later hear about it. I've actually been impressed on how very good the synchronization has been with the studio, pit lane and the world feed. Hopefully this will be addressed for next time.

* The audio cancellation gear used by the crew (especially Buxton) wasn't up to snuff
- many a conversation from pit lane was basically useless as it was impossible to hear
- this extended to Matchett/Hobbs and that other guy a few times as well

* Varsha should have been there. Diffey is OK but no Bob. Hopefully his Fox contract is up and he can slide in there. Heck, it would have been nice to have him in just for color here and there.

Vettel:

* Vettel won again? ZZzzzz zzzz zzz wake me up when someone else does... this was a very parade-like race, to me anyways.

* WRT donuts: very impressed with how precise they are. No kidding, it does make me wonder if he's been practicing them. If he's practicing them, then the team would know that and perhaps they're OK with it and the radio traffic is a sham.

One more race and we'll see what happens with the rule changes for next year.

Here on the BBC the highlight show didn't start to 10:30. Have to confess I fell asleep soon after the SC went in and didn't wake up until the last 5 laps. Apparently I didn't miss much.

Agreed, can't wait for those rule changes as well as all the moves to be completed. I think it will be an interesting year. I just hope the Turbo's don't prove reliable (because even the back runners finish just about every race at the moment), and the cars are similar paced. That way we can see who the better drivers are.

And of course Kimi vs Alonso will be explosive, literally!

I'd love to see Massa - people tend to forget he was just barely knocked out a of WDC by Lewis, on the last turn, of the last race - but it won't happen.

It'll be the usual suspects, I'm afraid.

Good bye Mark. Thanks for all the entertainment. Vettel could have won over a lot of supporters today by giving the victory to him. If they hadn't stacked them in the pits, Mark may have won on merit.
My big wish for next years rule changes are a more even playing field and a bit of unreliabilty with those turbos. However when you look at the top teams, Vettel is the out and out number one at RBR. Results at Ferrari and Mercades will be split between their drivers as they won't have a 1-2 set up. Let's see who ends up where and look forward to 2014.

ya know, he really isn't a bad guy tho. and i really do believe he is a very good racer, if not the best racer on track right now.

i'm just tired of one guy winning all the races.

i wouldn't boo him either. seems very humble on the telly. enjoys winning.

the problem is we've seen this **** before, one guy wins all the time and it gets old.
