I think those are hex values, turns out to be week 48.

Production date LCD screen:
ioreg -l | grep IODisplayEDID | sed 's/^.*<//g' | cut -b 33-36

A019 - yes 19. Maxed out 15" MBP here (2.6Ghz/16GB/1TB/750m 2GB). Bought on November 6th, received November 11th.

Guys, ive just resigned, sending mb pro back to apple and gonna buy air again, at least it was hell of a reliable machine...

Gonna do the same thing. Sadely the Air is the only choice right now if you want to go 13" safely and not be screwed of 2000€ in a year.

It has been that bad? Having own several retinas (13 and 15) over the last year cannot stand my wife's MBA (2012) display, are you sure?

I have wanted the retina screen since the first 15" appeared, but held off because of the screen issues ... I live 500km from the nearest Genius Bar and so it is not so easy to deal with problems. So I bought a MacBook Air last year.

I'm a writer and sharp text is more important than anything else. So, now have sold the Air and bought the MBPr13 just before Christmas. Seems perfect so far.

I'm interested in knowing what might happen and what to look out for, but I'm taking AppleCare and so the screen will be covered for 3years, and for me, this screen compared with the Air's screen ... the risk is worth it.

Really comes down to that, how much the screen matters as I think the Air is brilliant in every other aspect but I was mostly writing on my ipad4 because I just couldn't do long sessions on the Air.

I would rather have a none retina display that will last years and that I could easily resale when the retinas are going to be issue free than a faulty LG display with IR that I could not even sale to an idiot when the problem is going to get really bad ...

It is not about being really bad - tried 2 rmbps 13inch in 3 weeks - everytime ordered from apple store, had to w8 till assembled and delivered - both did not pass retention test (3 minutes were just enough to show retention) - as many confirm retention get worse over time so i dont want to keep mb that will definitely have problems in the future, and ordering third, forth... is simply time consuming, being without conputer over month, no thank you;( despite i really love retina screen, this is unacceptable and sad

Understand, agree a $2k + machine should not have IR. I have not bothered to look for the IR through the tests, as I did on my previous three 15" rMBP (first two were LG, third one was Samsung), decided to deal with it later if it does within the first 3 years through Applecare. (We also bought our daughter a 2012 13" rMBP and also got Applecare for it).

What AppleCare is going to do besides changing your defective screen for another defective screen ? It's not the 15" so it's not as if they could give you a Samsung screen. It doesn't exist.

but I still don't get it, they made 2013 late whole new, changed internals, but still keep using 2012 LG screens? why the hell? god i really love how it works and looks (13incher), but this retention is killing me, apple, why?

Boar Bro, you are annoying and playing the same song all day...

If you need a psychologist to talk to and help you, check the yellow pages...

You are telling the same s*** over and over...

We all understood your opinion at your first post. It is not necessary to repeat it every five minutes.

Looking on the bright side ... If the worst happens when I'm out of warranty in 3 years there will probably be a retina or much better than now Thunderbolt screen, and so I could use the laptop closed as the IR is a physical problem on its own screen and wouldn't transfer to the external screen? And iPads should have progressed hugely, so just use an iPad for mobility.

But, if this happens on a huge scale ... Millions of MBPrs with useless screens in 3years ... I think there will be serious trouble for Apple in legal actions and loss of customers.

... I'm not giving an "opinion" but facts and it's the way you have to ignore them that is killing me. You know you are going to have trouble but you go straight to the wall anyway... Enjoy then :)

Because they paid those screens so they need to sell them. Most consumers are not aware about IR so they are not going to throw away god knows how much screens they ordered to LG. Maybe in the latest batchs the issue is fix who knows.

How do you know as a fact there are no 13" rMBP Samsung screens? Have you tear down A18 & 20 panels to check them?

I think those are hex values, turns out to be week 48.

Good point, could very well be. Problem is everybody seems to interpret these values differently. Having a "3016": 30 hex would be 48 decimal indeed, but 16 hex would be 22 decimal, meaning...?

I am not too sure about the values in the colorsync profile either. It could well be they don't represent the true manufacturer, model and production date but are pretty generic. All I know right now is that some people have a screen with a 610 + A018 code, others have a screen with a 610 + A020 code.

Does anyone here have any solid proof or even good reasoning to what manufacturer and model these codes might or might not refer?

What AppleCare is going to do besides changing your defective screen for another defective screen ? It's not the 15" so it's not as if they could give you a Samsung screen. It doesn't exist.

Jeanloup, could you give us some more insight to your claims?

  • "13 inch MBPr only come with LG screens."
How do you know? You mentioned the 610 code. How do you know it's LG? I've read speculations on this forum and elsewhere about 610 possibly being LG, but also about it possibly being Samsung, or meaningless. Same goes for the A018 and A020 codes by the way. Could you provide us with some link that really supports your "LG-only" statement?

  • "All 13 inch models suffer from retention."
If I recall correctly you've had 3 (or 4?) A020 screens and one A018 screen which all showed retention. I really do understand your frustration and even your suspicions, but your experience does not proof much for all the other screens that are out there. For that you would need manufacturing info from informed sources or a much larger sample size, don't you agree?

  • "IR gets worse with time. In a few months your computer will be unusuable." (...) "Every 13" screens are defective so far." and "Some will tell you they don't have it but truth is it's probably just a matter of time. 13" are alas doomed"
Those are pretty bold statements. Again I would really like to see some solid support for them. My thoughts:
    - Firstly, as far as I know IR is not widely known or proven as an issue that gets worse when panels age. At least this is not what I to read in the various LCD / plasma screen forums.
    - Also, if one (or 2, 3, ...) particular screen gets worse in time with respect to image retention that does not mean any screen of the same make and model will.
    - If one particular screen gets worse in time that does not mean all screen models of the same manufacturer will.
    - If one particular screen of manufacturer X gets worse that does not mean screens of manufacturer Y will too.

Please help us out.

You are crying like a baby without arguments...
No body in your circle of acquaintances wants to hear you cry anymore, so you hang around at forums and write bulls***... not facts, just bulls***...
You have no idea about displays, maybe the problem is with your eyes and brain...

If there is IR on my display one day it is not your problem...
We all are trying to ignore you, and your senseless postings...

You are not able to have fun and enjoy your buyings, or you cannot afford them, so you try to annoy other people...

Do you really think, every rMBP have IR and a yellow tint, and nobody is able to see this?

We are trying to find out, where IR comes from and how buyer can prevent to buy one with failures...
We are trying to figure it out, but you disturb it...

I think your are just a troll...

1990 + 22 = 2012. Afaik 3016 is from week 48 in 2012

:D Thank you, you made my day lol.

I have been following this thread as I just purchased a 13" from my local Apple Store about a week ago. I also have a 2012 15" rMBP which is my second one. My original was returned for IR 4 months after I had purchased it. It did develop over time. I had no problem with Apple and a year later my current 15" is just great. The current 13" I have has a bright evenly lit screen with no obvious signs of IR. I don't test them and don't intend to. If IR does develop I am willing to deal with it through Apple Care. Other wise my only option is to give up on the 13"rmbp which is the only computer I am interested in at this time. The Air just doesn't do it for me. It is really hard to believe that literally thousands of 13" rMBP are out there and they all have IR. Just my two cents and I wish everybody the best of luck with whatever they decide.

Problem solved, just bought myself air 11 and tomorrow rmbp will be taken by delivery service
