No kidding.

On a side note, I passed my opportunity to buy two seats @ face value from cards last Tuesday. I could have bought games 3, 4, or 5. When I logged in to pick my seats only the fully catered seats were left ($350 a pop)or standing room for $50.

I really hate the idea of spending $700+ on a game so I passed my lottery password to a co-worker. I really had my heart set on a couple of bleacher seats for a couple hundred.

In review of the stubhub market today I am really kicking my butt.... But I had to keep reminding myself that I detest the secondary market......

I thought I'd never see the day when a baseball umpire admitted to getting a call wrong and then fixing it.
And that call should not have been changed if they never changed them before. Lets reinstate a few botched perfect games while we are at it.

I agree. Even though the correct call was ultimately made, video review doesn't start until next year. Talk about opening a can of worms. Every single close play is going to be decided by the group of umpires.

I'm obviously biased, but I agree. I'm a huge supporter of instant reply and would be fine with that call being overturned next season, but instant reply is not in place this season, and it should not have been overruled, period. You're right, this is opening up a huge can of worms, and every close play and botched call the rest of this series is going to be argued.

That said, I don't think it matters in the long run. Kozma is playing like the career minor leaguer he is, and Wainwright's in a funk tonight. Best I can hope for is we win tomorrow with Wacha on the mound. I'll be happy coming back home with one win at Fenway. One on the road, three at home. Worked for us in 2006.

Any umpire has the right to ask another umpire for help if he did not have a clear view of the play. All that happened here was he was motivated by an external force to confer with the other 5 umpires even if he DID have a clear view.

It was obviously a bad call initially, and it may be opening a can of worms but this could happen in ANY game. While it may not be normal for them to overturn calls with the original umpire agreeing the call was wrong, calls DO get overturned during the season in ways very similar to this they're just not as high-profile as this.

You guys are actually advocating to keep the wrong call in a World Series game just because replay isn't until next year? C'mon, that's ridiculousness. Your bias against Boston is speaking. Channel your anger toward Kozma who blew that. Get the call right is all I ask as a fan. They did the right thing.

My argument is not that they got the call right but that they didn't correct other blatantly bad calls over the years. Why start now? How many other close calls will or will not be overturned this series based on ump discretion?

Will they caucus over every manager argument or not.

Umps have over the years admitted after the game to blowing a call but not changed it during the game, so why is this different.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say world series.

So you want the potential for game-changing bad calls to continue, not have it fixed? Because that's the way it's been done in the past? Just because it favored the Red Sox? Come on, that's ridiculous and you know it. The point is to get better, to fix problems...not keep them because that's the way it's always been.

Why don't the umps try to get it right every time, there should be no well everyone is watching this game so we are going to do our jobs. They should always be doing their jobs not just in the world series.

If they have refused to change the call that would have saved a perfect game why not refuse a call that could save a world series game.

That should not matter as the umps are supposed to get it right every time, not one game a year.

FOX played audio of Hirschbeck, who was wearing a microphone, explaining the ruling to Matheny on the field:

"There's five of us out here, OK? And all five of us agreed 100 percent that it wasn't a catch," Hirschbeck said. "Our job is to get it right."

Major League Baseball executive vice president Joe Torre said in an interview on TV that it's common for the umpires to meet on the field when they have something to say.
So why not do that for every bad call, and why wait until the manager complains. If they know it was bad they should fix it right away. This is why baseball is a joke sometimes.

Look, honestly the only reason this was over turned is because the ump knew he made the bad call. He had already called him out and wasnt going to change it and call him safe right after he called him out. He had a clean view of the play. He was just assuming Kozma would catch the ball and started to call him out before the play was completely finished. I just think it was one of those subconscious calls that he knew he blew.

Fine, but this isn't the first time that has happened, but it is rare that it is overturned.

There needs to be more consistency. These are supposed to be the best umps doing the world series, calls like that should not happen at all.

My god you're thick headed. Typical Yankee fan. First of all it's not the first time a call has been overturned after the umps have conferred. Second, under the rule 9.04 section c the umpires are allowed to confer and change the call. The second base umpire was looking at the base and not the glove and consequently was not in the best position to make the call.

That should not matter as the umps are supposed to get it right every time, not one game a year.

Seriously? Because it's the world series of course it matters MORE.

It's called evolution. By your logic there should still be 9 balls for a walk. Get a grip bro. You know that if it were the Yankees you'd be defending them. Thank god the St. Louis fans have class and understand that getting calls right is what's important.

So why don't they confer all the time!! How many blown calls have there been this year alone that don't get changed that were blatant.

Even Farrell said he was surprised they changed it.

A perfect game doesn't matter, those only happen maybe 3 times a year?

If I was a Yankee fan I would be pissed if the umps didn't change it. But there were plenty of calls that they didn't change that hurt the Yankees.

Well said.

From the slo-mo, it was obvious he never had the ball in his glove. It hit the outside of the glove and then hit the ground...safe at second.

Explain the neighborhood play than. The SS or 2B never touches the bag but gets the call. Should those be outlawed.

Macnut,

Are you still sore over the umps correctly calling ARod out when he knocked the ball out of the Red Sox glove back in '04?

That wasn't a close or hard to tell play. The ball never went into the glove. He never had control of it.

To me that was A-Rod being a dick and he could have been called for interference. MY problem is the inconsistency with the umps in general. Instant reply could not come soon enough. And then there unwritten rule to never ask for help or change a botched call.
