He didn't have "that little extra." He's been pitching great all postseason (hello, he lost to Sanchez in game 1 of the ALCS by a score of 1-0), and again, he threw a majority of fastballs. Not the kind of pitch that "goop" or anything helps. None of his pitches were doing any funny dives or something indicative of strange movement - hitters would notice that immediately.

It's well known the Cardinals (like the Red Sox, mind you) have issues with lefties. And Lester is a powerful lefty. Nothing about what he did last night was out of the ordinary. When he can command both sides of the plate, as he did, that's the kind of result he gets.

I think if he keeps it up through next year we can see sub-3 ERA and Cy Young material. He threw, like you said, fastballs and it was clean. A Cy Young pitcher keeps that command virtually every game and he pitched like he looked like he's always been a 2.00 ERA guy, or basically totally dominant. What makes the difference between good and great is if he pitches like that so much that it becomes typical (ala Randy Johnson or Nolan Ryan). He pitched something usually better than his normal 2013 overall thus the headlines about him.

Let's hope he comes in again and pitches like that and we will see his stock to to #1 in the AL and pretty much erase memories of 2012. A lot of Sox players can make 2012 go away and I hope to see it, but in a close 7 game fashion. I know you prolly want to see full on sweep like last year's WS. :)

I hope so. I was glad to see the Cards win last night.

I will be happy if both teams win three and this could be a 7 game show. I will root for Red Sox in 7th game though. That Rosenthal was off the hook but Koji wasn't bad either. It's still Boston with the best middle relievers, set up pitchers, and closer and this could make the biggest difference in the series and not so much the starting pitchers. I would still rather have a Koji with hard to hit fastballs than a straight arrow Rosenthal. One of those two guys could be the last person with the ball.

Hindsight is 20/20 but when announcer thought that Red Sox was going to take out starting pitcher before issues, then that was the time to do it. The starter stayed in and before you know it, first and second (winning run) got on and the rest is history. It wasn't a blowout like game 1 but starters should be relieved when it becomes obvious something can be going wrong. On the other hand if they were like Detroit's starters taken out too early, that's also not as good. These seemingly small decisions of exactly when to replace the starter with middle reliever can make a difference when it's a close game.

Here's a good article that praises the two teams' bullpens:

Mostly just Craig Breslow actually. He pretty much single-handedly blew that one.
Saltalamacchia should have eaten that ball and not allowed Breslow a chance to throw. Plus who allowed the double steal. That is where it went to hell.

That entire play was a baserunning f-up by the Cardinals that led to an even bigger f-up by the Sox. Jon Jay, who was on 2nd, was halfway to third when Gomes caught the fly ball. If Gomes throws to 2nd, Jay likely doesn't make it back in time to tag up and it's an inning ending double play with no runs scored. Instead, Gomes tries to be the hero and get the runner at the plate, and we see how that worked out.

He Puig'd that one

I ran into two Cardinals fans today and I congratulated them on Rosenthal but they said, "What about Uehara?" They seem to know about Boston's threat and it may come down to those two in a close game.

Two nights ago Rosenthal was on the winning side but there's no guarantee. I can't wait. I quipped that the Yanks will probably buy those two anyway and they agreed. No wonder why the hate of the big apple's team.

What a ridiculous ending to what was an otherwise a great back and forth game.

Middlebrooks gets called for interference because he was laying on the ground and the runner ends up tripping over him.....

wtf did i just see?? ive had some beers but dude was out by a MILE, never even touched home plate wtffff

Such a bad way for that to end... I think I've seen enough of us throwing from home to third to last a lifetime.

Watching it in slow mo, Middlebrooks puts his feet up, which trips up Craig. Craig would've been safe by a mile had it not been for that.

He did put his feet up, but it looked like he tripped over Middlebrook's mid section.

dumbass rule imo. if the dude is standing in front of the bag and has the ball, well TS; the runner should be/would be out anyway

totally bogus and i have no stale in this game either way
