On a sad note, former CBS producer Tony Verna has died at 81. He was the first to figure out how to cue tapes for instant replay, for the Army-Navy game in 1963.

Now, you might want to blame him for the Dez Bryant debacle from last week, because the zebra closest to the play called it a completion at the half-yard line, without replay, there would have been no review. Except, of course, somebody else would have come up with it sooner or later.

I can't believe GB let it slip through their fingers. I think in a sense they lost the game more then the Seahawks one the game.

No such drama on the AFC side - Pats routed the colts. I wasn't expecting a complete rout, given how the colts man handled the broncos, they looked like two different teams. Then again the Pats look like a different team when they played the Ravens a week earlier.

Right, but whatever you think it's not something you say in a press conference. Can you imagine if it were Romo, Brady, or some other less liked QB that said that?

he he he true.

I do wonder why GB didn't go after Richard Sherman once he got hurt. I would have thrown at him several times.

Looking at the final stats GB and Seattle were pretty much tied in all categories so I wouldn't say the worst team won today. Just the opposite. The best team won today.

Could GB have pulled off that comeback ?

With a healthy QB? Yes.

But I don't want to take anything away from The Seahawk's incredible comeback. As a 49er fan, I hate you. But as a football fan, I have to admire your team, their effort, ability and achievement.

Aaron Rodgers just said "we were the better team today." ...

And they were ... up until about three minutes to go in the game.

Right, but whatever you think it's not something you say in a press conference. ...

I don't know why you think it's so horrible to say that. I've heard that statement, or variations of it, many, many times. It's just frustration from a losing player. Why do you think they shouldn't show their frustration?

Its not how you start the game, its how you finish.

Its like car racing, its great to have a dominating race, leading all the laps, but if you cannot lead the last lap, what good is it.

I'd say GB lost the game as much as Sea won the game.

Props to Seattle for staying in it, and not giving up though.

Agreed. The only score that counts is the one at the end of the game. GB blew several opportunities, including not fielding the onside kick and letting Seattle get the two point conversion. Getting deep in the red zone and coming away with field goals early didn't help, either.

New England's win over Indianapolis was much more convincing. But now I see that the NFL is investigating the Patriots for deflating balls. They may have done that, but it was to the Colts... :)

Yes. Of course the game's outcome is determined by who has the highest score.

Obviously.

But that doesn't change the events that led up to the final score. I would think that anybody watching the game would admit that the Packers had outplayed Seattle up until those final minutes. That is the source of Aaron Roger's frustration, that they had played so well and come so close.

Why would you want to overlook that? It helps to frame the circumstances that Seattle arose from and makes their accomplishment even more amazing.

The key point in your post is bolded. Yes, GB out played Sea for 56 minutes, but football games are 60 minutes. GB failed to stop Sea, pure and simple. its doesn't matter how well you play for 3 quarters. When Patriots played the giants in the super bowl, do people talk about how well the Patriots played for 3 quarters who how the Giants beat them in the 4 quarter.

To be fair, people talk about how the Giants won on a fluke play all the time.

It kinda does matter how you play for three quarters.

But this meta discussion has gone on long enough. (for me al least)

The last word is yours.

You're welcome to tell me again how it's the final score that determines the game.

Really? That sounds pretty absurd. In the first one, the Giants put together a pretty solid drive to take the lead. In the second one, the Patriots gave up the winning score in order to get the ball back. Not sure what this "fluke play" business is about, when football games are plain full of flukes.

The Tyree "helmet" catch in the first loss to the Giants. And, IIRC correctly, the Pats got the ball back with a chance in that one too, didn't they?

With like 15 seconds left at their ~20 yard line. The second one, welker dropped the pass that would have won the game. It wasn't a perfect throw either but he did have both hands on it.

Wait what? The pats game was over before the 4th quarter even began. In a close game sure, but that's a blanket statement which doesn't apply to every scenario.
