That's why. Had the patriots not had a history it would not have been so harsh and Brady's snobbish attitude didn't help either.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe in "histories" in this case.

IMO, each incident should be judged on its own and punished accordingly ... unless the rules and procedures include contingencies for repeated offenses.

It feels like the NFL is making things up as they go along.

It isn't harsh enough. It calls under scrutiny their Super Bowl win, as there was the chance that they wouldn't have even made it that far.

As harsh as it sounds, they should vacate their Super Bowl win, because their playoffs run was tainted.

BL.

They should vacate their Super Bowl win because the defender was standing too far to the left.

:D

I was listening to ESPN radio this morning (Mike & Mike) and they recounted at least two incidences where balls were manipulated and the teams were only fined $25,000. I truly don't understand (and I'm no Patriots fan) why this incident rises to the level of punishment just meted out.

This is a moment for the league to tighten down its practices and oversight. What a shame it would be to believe that this severe punishment somehow absolves the league of taking the steps they should have taken years ago.
Those other instances the teams admitted faulty and took their punishment. The Patriots decided not to cooperate with the league and got punished for it.

I'm under the impression that "The Patriots" cooperated with the league, supplying phone records that helped the league come to the conclusion that it did.

Brady didn't cooperate with the league at all. And the ball boys lied about their involvement to investigators.

If only Brady beat the **** out of his wife he would still be allowed to play week one.

Very sad that this is true. But of course it's all about the PR with Goodell. Now he can shake the image that he's in Kraft's pocket and there's less focus on how he botched the Rice case and that sham of an "investigation", the Mueller report.

Because no one cared about those other instances. I'd bet one of them was the Carolina/Minnesota game from last season, yeah? Teams openly tampering with balls on the sideline, and they get a warning. But no one cared and the media didn't turn it into a huge circus act. But this one puts Goodell squarely in the spotlight, and he has to overcome the hit his (and the league's) image took from the Rice case.

Although I imagine Giselle is the one that beats the crap out of Tom. :p

Seems Brady is going to appeal.

Because they are. I mean, 1 psi of air in a ball was of such monumental importance to the league that they...allowed possibly illegal balls to be used for an entire half of the AFC championship game. And honesty is of such monumental importance to them that they...allowed Dean Blandino to tell a baldfaced lie in a press conference.

If this was the Patriots' first offense it would not be a big deal. The problem is they have a culture of lies and cheating. In Foxboro that is how they operate.

Yes, outscoring the Colts 28-0 in the second half with replacement balls certainly turned it into a squeaker.

So we have Spygate in '07 and ball deflation in '14. In the first instance, BB continued doing something that all teams were doing until the league issued a memo the previous season. Ball tampering is, in all likelihood, something that goes on around the league. And now I will stop you from accusing me of making excuses for the Patriots. I'm not. They broke the rules and got punished. But "a culture of lies and cheating"? C'mon, unless you have specific other examples, that's your fairly obvious anti-Boston bias showing. I could look at the number of Yankees busted for or connected to PED use and say that same thing. But I won't, because I accept the fact that many players in baseball use them.

Not to derail this into a PED thread but that is a problem with MLB not having strong enough rules in the first place. Players will bend the rules as long as they can get away with it. The Patriots got caught.

The Patriots got caught.

Yes, they did. I already said that. Thing is, so have a lot of other teams (www.yourteamcheats.com) - and yet it seems it's only an "attack on the integrity of the game" when the Patriots do it. I have no problem saying NE broke the rules and should be punished. I am tired of them being held to a different standard and people's absurd talk of asterisks, which is really just them saying, "Well, the Patriots cheated, so my team didn't really lose."

Score is irrelevant. If you don't play by the rules and fair, you bring the entire game into disrepute. what then are you teaching to the kids about the integrity of the game?

They cheated, and still get the reward: the championship, the trophy, and the rings.

I'd teach my kids that the NFL is a $9 billion dollar business, has no integrity, and is driven by PR. I'd tell them not to look at NFL teams or players as role models. And I wouldn't expect professional athletes to raise my kids or instill values in them.

Trust me, a lot of the outrage goes away when you are honest with yourself about what pro sports are - and aren't.

When you're a repeat offender you don't get much benefit of the doubt I guess. Cheating player on a cheating team with a cheating coach.

Poor guy gets to spend 4 Sundays in bed with a super model :)

I guess Goodell isn't invited to the Kraft's Christmas party this year. :p

Tell that to Greg Hardy. Not found guilty, got a ten game suspension.

Even more than that, the NFL cannot tolerate any form of cheating suggesting the game is biased. I applaud the league for how this was handled.

I suspect that if you scratch the surface of many (if not most) teams you'd find them pushing the limits of a rule or regulation, trying to gain some edge. The Patriots repeatedly getting caught, but I don't believe they're the only ones doing anything.

Yeah, but that's not the agenda the national media, especially those frauds at ESPN and NFL Network, are pushing. Funny how there was no talk of asterisks or taking away titles a couple of years ago:from NinersNation.

No. Had the patriots not completely dominated the league since 2000 it would not have been so harsh. Brady is snobbish? lol any evidence for that?

I didn't know it the primary job of football players was to...teach kids.

Awful argument. You are saying the NFL has strong enough rules about air pressure? Is that why during the jets game, the refs overinflated the balls to 16 psi? Is that why the vikings/panthers who were caught ON TAPE tampering with the balls on the sideline only got a 25k fine?

This is just a witch hunt. Also, NLFPA told brady not to give his phone to the NFL since they don't have subpoena power.
