A massive shock. I suppose he achieved his career goal and would have been under immense pressure next year to defend it. All the best to the guy and I'm glad he won the ultimate prize.

Alonso, vettel, werlein? All must be on the phone this afternoon.

Quite shocked. I wonder if the press reaction to his world championship had anything to do with it? A lot saying well done but he only won because Hamilton has mechanical issues and Hamilton is still the superior driver and how Mercedes cannot afford to alienate Hamilton etc.

As for replacement, will be interesting.

I think he's been contemplating this decision for a while now and took the decision based on his result, if he'd lost it I think he'd have stayed on. Nico has always said Hamilton is more talented so he knew winning against him was going to be immense.

Hamilton will no doubt be buttered up by merc now and be in favour again. They need him more than ever.

You might be a Liverpool supporter (Arsenal supporter, here), but you're bloody spot on!

[doublepost=1480694050][/doublepost]We should probably create a thread for who we think will take over from Nico.
I'm thinking Max, Ricciardo or even the new boy, Vandorne...

Bit of a surprise.

However being a husband and father of small child can change many mens view of life. Having accomplished his life long goal, rich enough for him and family to live a life of privilege and a young family vs a job (glamours as it is) takes you away from home 200+ days a year. Leaving on top at the height of his career. Many overstay well past their sell date and tarnish their accomplishments.

With all new cars and a much smaller engine advantage next year the chance of Mercedes being the dominant team is very much in doubt. Might come back next year to slogging along instead of going to races knowing you have to screw up royally not to finish 1 or 2.

Initially I was quite surprised but the more you think about it the more it kind of makes sense. I couldn't see him replicating it, so why not leave as champion? Won't be short of money or other offers. I suspect it will open up a bit of a scum for his seat though, which invariably will ripple down through other teams.

I'd love to see Verstapen get it but Red Bull will do everything possible to hold onto him. Alonzo probably has an out in his contract, but I'm not sure Merc would want him.

Along with all the 2017 changes, this can only be a good thing. Good luck Nico, but I for one won't miss you :D

This, I felt he timed it right, beat his long time friend/rival and left on a high, now he gets to be with his family and hey he could even raise a future WDC! I have always felt Nico was a smart guy and genuine nice guy and whilst I wish my driver beat him; you've just got to hand it to his improved mental strength which was lacking in previous seasons.

In hindsight I wish Kimi had left after winning WDC.

As for Rosberg replacement
I would love to see Magic Max partner Lewis because those two would be fireworks, possibly Perez he has beaten Nico Hulkenburg who is a good driver.

For kicks I would love to see Fernando or Button partner Lewis once more but I know it's not probable.

Probably Wehrlein. But Alonso or Vettel would make things very interesting. Hulkenberg is probably the best driver to miss out of having a top team give him a seat. Would be great to see what he could do with top equipment. If I was Mercedes and wanted to groom someone I would steal Vandoorne away from McLaren. Bottas would make sense then promote Wehriein to Williams.

On the other hand....Double deal.....Button for 2017 and Alonso for 2018.

But the with new cars. It's a gamble about who will have the advantage. Every time there is a big change in the rules someone had a big advantage for a half season or more (or 3 for mercedes). Everyone though that Hamilton was going to mid-field purgatory going to Mercedes and look how that turned out. If he had stayed at McLaren, now maybe Nico or Alonso would have 3 championships in the bag. (or split between them)

I agree, but he hasn't had one lately. Be interesting to see him race against Hamilton with the same equipment.

lol. ok.

i wasn't sure if you were following back when he drove for Renault and the McCalren the first time. ;P

And I agree. I'd love for him to score a decent ride again. OR for honda to improve.

and he won a race in a not so good car when he went back to renault....

ok. so seems there is a big stink on a FB page about Nico and the title and the retirement. and also on a couple of other sites i visit.

i can't help but wonder how long some of these folks have been fans? were they around in '94?

or at all during the senna/prost years?

there was controversy!

this stuff they are upset about is piddly ****.
