My Caps Lock key on my 15" is also less sensitive than other keys. I have to press it twice for it to register and with more force than the rest of they keys. I don't know if this is an issue because I had the same thing in my 2012 13" Air.

ignore what i said previous - my I key is still being annoying as hell. I cant type this message properly without it putting two I's in per key press....

For me, after 24 hours the issue went from "it always happens" to "it happens every 10 keypresses". Now I'm down to 1 in 100. I'll give it a few more days.

i'm the same here. i think im down to about 1 in 6-7 presses now. first day it was nearly every press.

does one have the issue with the up or down arrow button? I need to click very hard in order to work..

i think the keyboard just needs breaking in. i haven't had any issues with my "i" key for a while now. i suspect that all of the keys are like this.

sidenote: battery life is awful. AWFUL on my 13".

I had the exact same issue with my 'r' key... I just pressed it ~ 100 times, and now its registering perfectly... some bad QA/testing - and I can imagine this will cause alot of people to return. Look for refubs coming soon :)

I've noticed some keys are looser than others, they all register but some rattle more when using them, mostly the keys on the right side of my keyboard for some reason.

Just a quick update: as others said, after a few days my original problem (the "e" key registering multiple times) completely disappeared by itself. It cannot be reproduced anymore, regardless of what I try.

So I guess it's really a matter of some residual material from the factory that disappears eventually, or it just needs some "burn-in".

All that panic for nothing, although it was really annoying. To sum it up: for everyone else having the same issue, wait a few days before starting a return, as it might solve itself.

Thank you all for your input :)

I am currently having this problem with my "k" key.
Since reading this thread, I have decided to just press it ~ 100-200 times which has made the issue way more rare.

Now it only happens when my MBP is "cold" (sitting in my bedroom all night in sleep mode). If it has warmed up (like, if I launch some game or something and let it warm up), it registers perfectly every single time...
Then it happens quite a lot (the first 10 presses don't get recognized at all sometimes).

In very, very, very rare cases the k key registers double.

Do you reckon it just needs some more "breaking in" for it to work in a cold state as well?

Also, the fact that this is temperature dependant means it must be a rather interesting mechanical issue...

On another note: Sometimes the Z key feels weird but it always works perfectly.

My first machine had defective shift key. The second machine has up/down arrows which don't register.
The third machine is ok, but the screen is piss yellow.

I am done with this bs. I will be returning my $3000 laptop for good.

And oh, each and everyone of the machines have horrible UI lag when scrooling/zooming etc.

For me it was not only a matter of pressing it hundreds of times. It was a matter of letting a few days pass (and supposedly a few hot-cold cycles when using it vs letting it sleep at night). After 3-4 days it was good, after a week it was perfect. The problem cannot be reproduced anymore, at all.

So try to give it a few days, use it normally, and only if it still happens in a week, have it replaced. That's my suggestion.

My e key makes a "pop" noise that no other keys do. It's super annoying! The key registers 100% it just is REALLY loud. Anybody else having something similar? The I key does it VERY infrequently, but E key is basically every time...

Same issue here. Got my custom built 15in tMBP after a month's wait and encountered the same problem with the '7', '9', and occasionally 'N' key. The keys made a VERY loud pop and felt as if there had been something sticky under them, although they always registered the presses correctly. I tried repeatedly pressing the keys to break them in and the issue seemed to happen less frequently as time passed, but it never really went away. I ended up returning and reordering the machine.

Same happened to me with H key!!

I thought that was a defective keyboard on my 13" but after pressing the key like one million times (not joking, I wanted to be sure before changing it) now it's ok!

At the beginning when pressed was typing nothing or hh, but give it some time and will work perfect.

It *seems* to go completely away when the unit is cool, or at least temp changes seems to affect it. Several times over the course of today I haven't been able to make it make the noise at all, but inevitably it'll come back.

Just got my unit yesterday so gonna wait a few days and see what happens.

So this is the outcome from the Apple Store visit. I have the following options:

- wait for the Apple Store to get replacement parts (likely in a couple of weeks) and have them replace the keyboard (they never replace single keys, only the entire keyboard). The technician said that this is officially supported and that I would not notice anything - but on an unofficial and more private note, he said that "as a customer I would hate to have my brand new MacBook Pro gutted when I could have had it replaced for free"

- call Apple sales, ship mine back and have a new one shipped to me

I will take the week-end to think this over and play with the MacBook a bit. If the "e" key still doesn't fix itself with time, I will probably send it back and have it replaced. They said that replacement BTOs have priority in line over regular online orders, so it shouldn't take 7 weeks.

By the way, they were all amazed at the Apple Store as they had never seen a 15" TB before. They only have 13" stock and display models at the moment.

That's weird, they should allow a replacement BTO to be ordered as ship-to-store, allowing you to keep your current model until it arrives for the swap. May be the fact that you're in Switzerland and the policies are different? They definitely offered this to me so I could keep my notebook the entire time the BTO was being made and shipped. Turns out they found a model that matched my BTO spec in the back and I did that instead, but I was about to go with the ship-to-store option.

Do you guys have the holiday return policy in Switzerland? Maybe do the return via sales and have them send a replacement BTO, and buy/use a 13" while you wait? That's a bit extreme, but it'd get you a notebook in the interim.

I see many many people here with defective keyboards (one letter failing).

Don't people worry about this? Seems like something that will keep happening with this new keyboard because of the low travel.

Sounds like you have terrible luck. The keyboard should not be defective.
The UI lag, however, seems to be a software issue as far as I can tell - my machine is quite smooth so I'm certain it's something Apple can address with an update,

Worry? No. My keyboard is perfect.

I had a similar experience with my 'f' key. Actually, the first few times I used the computer, pressing 'f' would give an 'r' about once every 3 or 4 presses. After using my tMBP for about 10 days now, it has completely stopped happening.

Ok. For me it has not gotten better. It got worse.
The key used to only not work when the MBP was cold (cool room overnight).
Now it doesn't work unless I either hit it 5-10 times every single time or keep it "hot" (start a graphics intense game for example and keep it running).

It's perfect now, but maybe in a couple of months or a year it won't.

The low key travel might become a problem in the future. It has for many MacBook owners.

My problem started with the A key. It either wouldn't activate, or it would activate multiples. Several days later, the 1/!, Q, A and Z all stopped working altogether (all down the same diagonal on the keyboard). The keys to the left and right all work fine.

I've tried pressing the keys hundreds of times to no avail. Looked at various websites claiming they had solutions to similar key issues, but none worked for mine.

I finally contacted Apple support and was instructed to take mine to a store or authorized service facility. This does not sit well with me. Apple has my $2500 and I'm stuck using my 2012, which is lacking in RAM. Given there are so many with similar issues, with still relatively few out there, it's tempting to just return it.

Apple can replace it for you. They can't even repair them yet.
