OMG!

I was so excited to have replaced my 2011 MBP with the new 2016 MBP w/TB.

Sad to say, this is my third machine and I can't take this anymore.

The first machine I bought had a "/" key that kept registering twice.

The second machine had a completely dead iSight camera.

I gave it one more exchange yesterday, and this one, my THIRD machine, has an R key that is going crrazy!<--

The following is a result of me just typing in notepad, pressing "r" and "return" once each back and forth:

I encourage everyone with the 2016 to thoroughly test their keys, because I can't believe that I am just the unluckiest person in the world to have 3 machines in a row that have a hardware problem. This must be widespread. If you notice you keep making a typo with the same key, run a test like I did. This is not okay.

I am so disappointed in the quality control here for an $1800 machine. I'm in a web development program that requires me to use Mac. I also generally enjoy macOS and own apple everything. But I'm glad I didn't sell my 2011 yet, because it's going to have to last me until apple gets their **** together.

My 'U' key was a little bit iffy at first, with double stroking on me. Tested it a few times and it was definitely errant.

However between restarts and software updates it seems to have corrected itself. Or maybe it was just a tiny bit loose and after a few uses it's sorted itself out. That seems more logical to me as the keyboard is ultra low travel so the slightest thing could cause that. Either way it works and it's fine.

How long did you have the devices before returning them? Were there any other issues other than "keyboard-gate" for you?

just tried it on my 2016 tb mbp...wasnt able to replicate the error...i hate the keyboard itself and cant get used to it...but mine works fine

One of the units I purchased also had an R key with the exact same symptoms. It was returned immediately to the store. I couldn't even set it up as my wifi password and Apple ID have the letter R and it was double lettering on a concealed password field.

The replacement, however, is perfect. I would not ever EVER settle for a defective keyboard. Keep returning until you get one without issues!

dang three faulty keyboards in a row?

seems plausible/possible, with a screen or something

but that really is horrible luck :(

I have had 3 exchanges for keyboard issues. All had malfunctioning keys. Also all display models at my local Apple store have defective keys. Returning my macbook pro for good. I can't spend any more of my valuable time on this BS.

My 7 key didn't register properly towards the bottom left, but it (I assume) broke in after an hour or so. I also noticed my caps lock key was mushy and not very clicky, didn't notice that until the last few days after nearly 3 weeks of having the machine - I don't use caps lock. Been making a point of clicking it in a few times every now and then and it seems to be fine now.

The fact this 'breaking in' period is seemingly so widespread isn't ideal, but as long as it gets to where it should be within a reasonable amount of time then it isn't the end of the world I suppose.

Can you elaborate ? Certain keys not working or?

I already wrote on an other thread but this one seems more active.

My "enter" key (on a Swiss layout, the "big" enter key like in all none US keyboard) feels really different compare to the other keys. I have a clicky feeling when I type but with the enter key it's like weak, flabby. If I touch the key on the side, I have almost no "click" and at the center a bit but nothing compared to the others. It frustrated me each time I hit this key... The space bar also have a different feeling but it's "ok".

Does someone have the same problem on a none US keyboard ?
Thanks in advance !

PS: Also I do not live near an apple store, is it ok to maybe exchange after 2 weeks ?

If you're on a Swiss layout I assume you live in Switzerland. I would still take a trip to the Apple Store, even if it's a couple of hours away, to compare with the store models.

If you don't have a chance to do that and you're not satisfied, return it.

Mine is the opposite. The enter key is specially clicky. It doesn't bother me, but it's different

Yes. I will do that, thank you for the feedback.

Okay, that's weird. Is there 2 switches for special keys like space or enter ?

Honestly, my keyboard has no such defects and I personally love the new keyboard.

I really like the new keyboard as well - I think it's an improvement over the old design (both the 12" MB and the older chiclet)

That being said, my 13" w/TB definitely has had some funky stuff happen - the shift key gets sticky sometimes, certain keys feel noticeably different/make more or less noise than others. It's not a problem right now, and it doesn't really impact typing, but it is very different from the 15" MBPr that it replaced.

I'm more concerned about the long term longevity now - having a semi-working keyboard is the most frustrating thing in the world, don't want to be caught somewhere and suddenly not be able to use my 'r' key properly.

My "G" key wasn't working, but seemed to fix itself after a while. It seems bizarre that I should have this on a computer that costs $3000. Very, very frustrating.

I have another issue: When some of the keys get warm from normal use, they start making a clicking noise that's about 5x as loud as normal. It goes back to normal if I let the computer sit for a while.

My "r" key did settle down finally.. but I'm still going to return the computer. It is a beautiful machine, but my old one can last me another year or so while this new hardware is improved upon.

I have an issue with my i key. Spent 1.5 hours on the phone with Apple running through a litany of steps.

Tech then said she'd arrange a replacement through support and not sales because an return may mess up my financing through Barclays.

She said I needed to wait 1 business day while the request went through. Then later that night I get an email that there are more steps to try and to provided her with a time to call me on Monday.

I got my machine late on 12/15 but didn't take it out until late one 12/16. I became aware of the issue on 12/17 as I tried using the machine more.

Tech said if the request goes through I have a 1-2 week wait for a replacement after Apple gets mine and does whatever they do.

Here's a video I made of the issue. There's a list of the things she had me do in it.

I'm hoping this problem isn't widespread. The genius I went to didn't know anything about it, but it was also the first touch bar MBP he's seen for repairs. In my case, random keys along the top edges of the keyboard make loud clicking sounds when the computer gets hot. I also had some defect in power management. I returned it and bought a new one, which should arrive in a couple weeks.

Edit: I'm glad this thread only has 72 entries so far. It gives me some reassurance that this might not be a common problem.

If you were to read through the thread, you would see that many cases went away with use.

I was one of the people who commented that my "g" key got fixed after a while. My post was about an issue that arises when the computer gets hot from extended use. To my knowledge, that doesn't go away. Am I missing something?

My apologies, I did not know your backstory here (it's been awhile since I read through it).
