Hey,
I'm seriously disappointed with this new Macbook Pro. And becoming frustrated, in my opinion, with the slightly narrow minded opinions and statements from some, re: what constitutes 'pro' needs and excuses for lack lustre Apple.
Just because a user requires more RAM and gpu power doesn't mean they are after a 'gaming machine'. And a 'gaming machine' refers to the expected use of a machine. Nothing else imo. Folk are stereo typing.
My day job is as senior technical artist in a company that's won back to back VFX Oscars. I'm no stranger for the need for 'pro power'. My current workstation is a 128GB PC and several times a day I have to flush memory or close something down because Im maxing it.
I've been reading the 'waiting for skylake' thread off and on for around 18 months while holding out for the next MBP to embark on some personal projects.
I've waited for this release for several reasons:-
Ive been enjoying my day job, very busy with it and was in no rush to invest in a newer computer.
I want a laptop that has a proven record that will last. aka build quality. Nothing has come close to MBPs IMO. And I want to keep in the eco system that I've grown up in and invested in.
I realise Apple don't just slap any newest and greatest tech in and throw it down the conveyor belt but there's a harmonious synergy between hardware and software. I expected it wouldn't be cutting edge, top of the spec tree components and I expected to pay a premium as all their computers are. (not this much premium).
For me, they seriously, at this moment in time got the balance of the system VERY wrong.
I want a laptop so I can move around the house to where the wife is in the evening so we still get to spend time together while I tinker.
I understand laptops need to make compromisers over its desktop counterpart but why can't I expect the 'gold standard' in 'pro laptops' at an inflated price to have more ram then 16GB? More powerful gpu options. I wouldn't purchase the top BTO version to do hobby 3D even if it was £1000 cheaper. THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FROM A 'PRO, GOLD STANDARD COMPUTER' in 2016.
If you use your MBP for 2d graphics, web content, programming etc, good for you. Don't think your tasks are the only 'pro' use of a computer. Some tasks just require more RAM and gpu grunt. That's not the programs requiring the memory (for all those calling out 'what application') but rather the data that's been put through it. I don't care what your use is. You buy the configuration that best suits your needs. Thats what configurable options are for. There's a 13inch system if probability is your main concern...
Now I don't expect to be creating and rendering entire new worlds and huge FX sims etc and I certainly don't expect to be rendering sequences. I do however want to do modelling, texturing, scattered geometry and render stills from off the shelf software and venture into low level VR with the ability and speed I would expect a 2k-3k quid laptop to preform at. Baring in mind the top spec MPB is nearer £4k! I expect a pro laptop to do this with today's applications and the applications that will come out for the next couple years. I personally think this computer takes the *&^% on its pricing and spec and already well on its way to passing its shelf life. Never mind in 2-5 years time.
Again, seriously disappointed..
I may wait till the spring event in the hope they release Kaby lake and its reduced the power needs enough they feel like they can put 32GB in. But even then I'm thinking it may just be best to get the XPS or hope Razor put a display in with better gamut...
