I'm updating from a cMBP running Ivy Bridge. I don't care what I get at this point; it was interesting to skip an entire generation of Apple products though (the Retina series).
I have a cMBP running Sandy Bridge over here (early 2011). I can totally relate. We have a lot to look forward to. Can hardly wait to get my hands on the 13" with Touch Bar!

Have any demos shown up at the Apple Stores yet?

I was trying to reply to it from the Apple Store, but the reply page was not populating. So far there is only the 13" no touch bar MBP, hopefully by next week the 13" and 15" Touch Bar MBP demo ones will arrive in stores.

I'm genuinely curious; what's your workflow like that saturates 16GB?

I'm still disappointed with 16GB of RAM. I hoped for at least with 32GB and a 4K screen - but I will stick with my 15-inch pro, which will be delivery 16th of Nov.

Currently I use a 2014 MBP with 16GB and have trouble while running Docker and VirtualBoxes. Building micro services is very RAM consuming.

But I will not cancel my order...

The 15" is already 220 PPI! You'd have to be sitting super close for 4K to be better. Or are you after the ability to edit 4K video at true 1:1 resolution?

There are display models in the 5th avenue store in NYC of both sizes. Pretty sweet to see! But they are in glass enclosures.

Why is Apple keeping them away? They are not delicate art pieces, the touch bar is there for people to touch!

This together with the lack of review units is somewhat concerning.

It's been a week since announcement and they said they would be out in 2-3 weeks. Jeez give them some time to build the damn things.

Methinks they're not ready. Hopefully just software but you never know, Apple could be scrambling for the finishing touches hardware/manufacturing-wise before shipping.

Except the damn thing is built, but kept in a glass enclosure - where you think notebooks belong.

Making me feel better about a later ship date. Work out a couple bugs before mine shows up.

At car shows they have the new models built and on show. Doesn't mean they can move anywhere... ;)

For all we know the demos are hollow dummies with the screen and Touch Bar playing a video loop fed via the USB-C cable that's plugged into them.

(Okay, I'm sure that's not the case - but I think they genuinely aren't ready for primetime yet. :) )

Here are a few pictures of the display models in the 5th avenue Apple Store. (I found these on instagram so excuse the filters)

That's a strong possibility and a worry if mine is suppose to deliver in a weeks time!

Thanks for the photos! Last time I saw something kept in a glass tube like this was in Independence Day!

Well, it's certainly possible that the touchbar models currently on display are prototypes, and thus not the same as what Apple is shipping in the first place.

I think that's the most likely. The core principle of the Apple Store is to be able to touch and use Apple products. "How will the customer know they want one until they've used one". Keeping that one behind glass suggests it's a prototype or otherwise non-functional.

I think that's unlikely. Tech journalist tried the touchbar model when it was announced. They probably don't want people to try an item they can't purchase. That plus making a show of it makes it seem cooler than it is.

13" on display at the new Union Square store in SF

Also typed on the 13" non-touch bar model and as a current 12" rMB owner I would rate the keyboard as much improved

I asked this yesterday when I checked out the 13" without the touchbar. Store reps told me they never have models to check out until they get their shipment of stock to sell.

I know I'm going to want to beef up the storage. 256GB seems low even though I am only using 80GB now.
