Long time lurker...played on the non-touch today in a Apple reseller and I said to the rep that I'm waiting on the touch bar. He said they were getting their demo touch bar model next week (no date). If that's true (pinch of salt?) then perhaps the review embargo will be ending same time.

To my relief, the new keyboard is actually ok. Much better feedback than I expected and you pick up the new style and feel pretty quick. New trackpad is boss.

Yes. The specs are a bit confusing because the "numbers" seem similar. But the 15" is a significantly more powerful machine in every sense and in every way. Far faster CPU, monumentally faster graphics, and faster I/O (4x TB3 vs 2x TB3 + 2x USB-C w/ TB2 speeds). It's not really the bigger screen size your buying.

Thanks but I was only referring to the CPU difference within the 15" model range. Not the difference between the 13" and 15" model. The base 15" CPU has 6MB of L3 Cache. The higher 15" configs have CPU's with 8MB of L3 cache.

Don't know why everyone is so obsessed with Kaby Lake. It's basically an overclocked Skylake with questionable energy efficiency. Cannonlake at least increases the energy efficiency of DDR4 memory, and maybe allowing for 32GB without killing your MacBook Pro's battery. But given that Intel chips are consistently delayed every year and no longer have the predictable tick-tock refresh cycle, I wouldn't be optimistic about a significant refresh next year, as Cannonlake would provide. It will likely just be a modest speed bump with Kaby Lake and no change in the RAM situation. I think this is the best time to get a new MacBook Pro. I'll wait until Cannonlake until I upgrade again, which probably won't be until 2018.

I'm updating from a cMBP running Ivy Bridge. I don't care what I get at this point; it was interesting to skip an entire generation of Apple products though (the Retina series).

Radeon pro 455 or 460? When will the extra 2gb be needed?
I bought the 460, but I'm not sure if I wasted my money or no.

Just going through this thread and seems like most people ordered the 15 inch? I ordered the 13 inch with touch bar (currently using a 12 inch macbook). Wondering if I should cancel my 13inch and order the 15. To go to the 15 would be a $500 price increase for me
I had two 15" MBPs before switching to 13" for my last one, and I've been really happy with my choice. So I'm staying with the 13" form factor for the touchbar version. I travel often and enjoy a lighter laptop, and the 13" is plenty for Lightroom and Photoshop, which is what I do other than the standard web surfing and email stuff.

The only reason I've chosen to upgrade to a 15" is a desire for a dGPU for gaming, and my preference for a larger screen when using Scrivener. The 13" is great, you just need to see what your needs are.

Just an FYI for those folks considering the CPU upgrade... the increased cache only impacts certain programs to a noticeable degree. Games, for example, love tons of cache. On the Broadwell desktop chips with Iris Pro graphics, the entire 128MB of memory can be used as a huge CPU cache and has notable performance benefits in games. This, however, was offset by a lower overall clock speed.

I'm not saying cache isn't important or doesn't help, just cautioning folks against going for that over a GPU upgrade or SSD upgrade when in most standard apps it won't make a wild amount of difference (nor will an extra 100MHz, generally speaking)

I've been advised the new x360 Spectre is going to not be coming to UK till new year...

So I'm decided on a rMBP 13"

Now I can't decide between the following

Base non-touch (£1300)
Non-touch with 16gb/512gb (£1628)
13" touchbar with 16gb/512gb (£1916)

My main concerns of the touch bar version is

a) it had 49kwh battery, non touch has 56kwh (and old model had 75khw). I know Apple says 10 hour life, but will it with a more powerful CPU, faster RAM and a touch bar on top with a smaller battery

b) The fact that two of the ports are underpowered

c) Might not need the touch bar

So I could go base non-touch model as a result, but then I worry if 8gb/256gb will last a few years. It might do, it might not, can't predict future.

If I upgrade the non-touch to 16gb/512gb, the upgrade costs are quite high and then I'm not sure I'm getting value as, for just a bit more, I'd get the more powerful 28w CPU, better GPU and two additional ports.

Must say I am genuinely surprised they haven't started shipping yet. Looks like they might not be arriving early after all.

Im still hopeful.....as long as mine starts shifting by Thursday next week i will still get it earlier than the estimate of the 14th.

I really expect the first batch (14th in Asia, 15-18th elsewhere), will start going out Thursday, so we will receive Friday and the rest will be travelling over the weekend.

I am pretty sure some of us will get before 17th November
For fun, I just look at my last few Mac orders to see when they arrived. 2015 onwards were ordered ASAP after the online store went live at their respective announcements/preorder times; all shipped to the UK.
  • 2014 iMac 5K: Estimated 18-30 December; Arrived 19 December (on time)
  • 2015 12" MacBook: Estimated 8-14 May; Arrived 6 May (two days early)
  • 2015 iMac 5K: Estimated 20-22 October; Arrived 21 October (on time)
  • 2016 12" MacBook: Estimated 27-29 April; Arrived 27 April (on time)
So in my experience at least, whilst Apple has delivered ahead of schedule for many items, especially iPhones, my Macs have arrived within estimate. I'm expecting my 17-24 November MacBook Pro to arrive around the 17th.

Great info. So as long as Apple act normally, the new MBP are a week away.

Though Apple hasn't always act normally recently. For example discounting the LG ultrafine monitors for a limited time.

This does not give me comfort lol. My in store pickup is on the 25 even though I ordered it the day of. There was not week or so range of expected delivery for those who had instore pickup.

I think it's interesting that the last two had a much shorter range of dates it should arrive

I'm genuinely curious; what's your workflow like that saturates 16GB?

Two areas for me that challenge the RAM:

1) The need to quickly cull and edit hundreds (and often times thousands) of Canon 5DsR files that are in the neighborhood of 65 mb each. (More often than not, I'm working on a super tight timeline.)

2) Editing full-frame (35mm) 4K 60 fps Canon 1D X Mark II video. These video files are ginormous, weighing in at 5.7 GB per minute of footage.
