And if he sucks in year 2 and blows out his arm in year 3 you are stuck with him. Lets not forget that playoff record.

And what if he opts out and the Red Sox resign him.

I might need to rephrase my statements. I never wanted them to sign Price but since they did I am glad that there is the opt-out clause. There is always a chance that he blows out his arm or sucks and doesn't opt-out. If he does opt-out and we do resign him then it would be a better deal since he will then be 33 years old.

It looks like the Tigers are finally addressing the bullpen, I'm glad Dombrowski went to Boston and maybe now Boston will have a terrible bullpen. ;)

Well, at least Greinke didn't go back to the Dodgers. The D-Backs are now more competitive than before, but still need at least one more good starter to really be a threat in the NL West. How much more money can they spend after that, though?

With Samardzija's lighter price tag, the Giants should have more money to spend on other needs. He was pretty bad for the Chisox last year, but health wasn't his problem. The Giants' coaching staff know what they're doing, and Samardzija will have the benefit of pitching with a good defense behind him in a very pitcher-friendly home park.

The Giants are supposedly in the middle of the Zobrist sweepstakes. They must really want to hedge against Joe Panik's bad back (which is supposed to be 100% better, anyway), or Zobrist is more willing to play LF than he's let on. Seems like the Mets are the best fit on paper.

breaking Mets news*

Ben Zobrist/Royals had a dinner meeting with the big cheeses from the Mets. Word on the street is he could get a 4 year gig.
Guess not the Mets. Seems the Cubs signed him.

4 years $56

bad move, he will regret it when we are at the WS again...

He can buy tickets along with the mets to watch the World Series. He will be able to afford them.

You said the Mets would be at not in. I was agreeing with you.

The New York Mets in a collection of posts. Try to be relevant and effective, but ultimately fail.

Also, what exactly are the Yankees doing? Starlin Castro is awful.

What? that made no sense at all. All teams try be "effective" and "relevant" every year...smh
Mets made it to the WS last season in case you forgot.

Mets agree to a 2 year deal with Asdrúbal Cabrera from the Rays (infield depth with some power)

I like both these moves. Cabrera can play 3B when Wright needs a day off, Tejada or Flores is the backup middle IF. The Mets didn't need Niese, they can re-sign Colon to get them through when Wheeler returns then use Colon in the BP.

Michael Cuddyer is retiring. So now we have a open position. This is getting interesting.

see post #54

Those Cubs are serious. Didn't they put out a ton of money already for other players? I can see why odds makers put them up pretty high.

Cubs are tied atop of MLB in odds along with SF Giants. I don't know how SF can be so high with Greinke at Arizona and the still tough Los Angeles. There's that myth or curse that it's an even year so SF should go to playoffs. But on odd years we are doomed but last year had some high points and if it weren't for injuries we could have gotten in for sure.

Cubs appear as deepest team since 2000s NYY.

So, now the Mets need a backup 1B.

We'll trade you Posey, Giants backup 1B for your Thor.

Giants need one more premier pitcher to make a 2010-like Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, Bumgarner (aided by 8th and 9th closers Romo and Wilson) rotation more than anything, including hitting in .300 zone. SF is not going to get a larger than life Bonds, Cabrera, or Sandoval so we have to stick to smallball and smart pitching.

So Pete's current gamble didn't pay off it seems.

A change in Major League Baseball commissioners did not alter the stance toward Pete Rose’s eligibility for the Hall of Fame.

Rob Manfred, who succeeded longtime commissioner Bud Selig in January, has denied Rose's application for reinstatement, informing baseball's all-time hits king on Monday that he will remain on the outside looking in nearly three decades after his ban for gambling on the sport, and issuing a three-page statement that says Rose has fallen far short of rehabilitating his life in a fashion that suggests he could associate with a major league team.

Manfred cited "new evidence" his staff turned up after Manfred decided in April to reexamine Rose's case and ordered a "comprehensive review" of the case, and found further instances of Rose violating baseball's Rule 21 on misconduct.

Most notably, Manfred said, was a notebook federal investigators obtained from Michael Bertolini in October 1989 that detailed "records of bets placed by Michael Bertolini on his own behalf and on behalf of Pete Rose, including bets placed on Cincinnati Reds games by Mr. Rose during the 1986 championship season when he was the player-manager for the Cincinnati Reds."

Rose met with Manfred in New York three months ago, one month after Rose's representatives submitted a polygraph test Rose took in August to, Manfred stated, "demonstrate the veracity of certain prior statements he made concerning his violations of (MLB's gambling policy."

Manfred said the polygraph results did not enter into his ruling. Manfred said that during their September meeting, Rose acknowledged betting on Reds games in 1987 (a year after he retired as a player), but that he "could not remember" many facts established in the Dowd Report on his gambling in 1985 and '86.

He also "made assertions concerning his gambling habits that were directly contradicted by documentary evidence (the Bertolini notebook) secured by my office.

"And, significantly, he told me he currently bets recreationally and legally on horses and sports, including baseball.

"It is not at all clear to me that Rose has a grasp of the scope of his violations of Rule 21....I am also not convinced he has avoided the type of conduct and associations that originally led to his placement on the permanently ineligible list.

"In short, Mr. Rose has not presented credible evidence of a reconfigured life, either by an honest acceptance of his wrongdoing, so clearly established in the Dowd Report, or by a rigorous, self-aware and sustained program of avoidance by him of all the circumstances that led to his permanent ineligibility in 1989."

Now imho Giants deserve top gambling odds where they were with Cubs. I didn't think just Samarzija was enough to do it, but adding Cueto makes Giants equal with Cubs now! This baseball season could come down to two best manned teams which may be Cubs and Giants. Let's see what happens.

Bumgarner
Cueto
Samarzija
Peavy
Cain

This is as vicious as the 2010 rotation of Bumgarner (young upcoming LH pitcher), Cain (Cy Young candidate), Lincecum (recent two time Cy Young winner), and Sanchez (NL strikeout leader). If there was ever an even year we have to expect to see postseason, this is it.
