The contract is until Dec 31, 2017 so I assume it's not for free.

Of course not..... But I would imagine an advisor/instructor would be earning less than an active player and hopefully not anywhere close to $27 million that was still owed to him.

The MLBPA won't allow any money to be left on the table. Unless he retired and there was a buyout of some sort.

Yeah... Just read he will still be paid the $27 million since it isn't a retirement. He will be released then signed to the instructor contract.

This is just a way for ARod to save face I guess.... Because the Yankees should have just outright released him then. If ARod couldn't retire then be hired on as an instructor, then it doesn't really help the Yankees besides opening a roster spot.

Either way they have to pay him. Unless he retires outright he is guaranteed his money. And even then Im sure the MLBPA would have something to say about it.

Right that is what I am getting at. I was thinking it was an outright retirement and then would be hired on as an instructor for like maybe $10 million which would give the Yankees financial flexibility in saving $17 million. The Yankees/ARod should have negotiated that in this situation. Because besides PR for ARod, he still gets his $27 million plus this instructor gig. It doesn't really benefit the Yankees. They should have just released him in this case and said goodbye.

This contract hasn't benefited the Yankees since the Day George signed it. It was a huge albatross on the team.

I agree. I just find the instructor gig odd considering they didn't work out a deal with ARod to get out of the contract to save some money.

This instructor thing only benefits ARod and his ego. Because now it is a bigger financial strain for the Yankees. That $27 million owed plus the money to be paid out to him with being an instructor.

It was a peace offering to one of the most well known names in the sport. To just release him would be a media **** storm.

Only with ARod throwing his usual tantrum. The media would be on the side of the Yankees. It would be seen as something that had to be done. The media would be billing it as the fall of ARod, not how bad the Yankees are for releasing him.

It would be bad either way, the Yankees still owe him 27 million either way. You don't just do a quite release and hope to dust it under the rug. It would have been big news.

3000

The guy could seriously retire at this point and be the GOAT of baseball.

Most hits, period if you count Japan
Only player to string 10 consecutive seasons over .300 while hitting more than 200 each season
262 hits one season which is the record
...all this while starting the majors midstream in his baseball career

If he quit today or soon, he would retire at over .300 and I hope he leaves this sport with an over .300 average than trying to achieve 4,000 hits by his late forties but have his BA go way, way down.

On individual season records, this guy is unmatched today and only sees Pete Rose as historical equivalent, and hockey only had Gretzky and basketball only had Jordan or Kareem on this type of outlying statistic. Football has nobody this consistent.

If anybody now or in the future puts five seasons together of over .300 and 200 hits each season, that would still be considered phenomenal. If such a person did this starting at age 27, those five seasons would be considered close to impossible. There's no precedent for doing this ten years in a row.

Anyway, who can make a case against him as GOAT (.314, 3000 hits, and .353/1278 hits in Japan), and besides his batting, he is a great outfielder to boot so he's no one trick pony. My dream would be for him to get into the 3200 club and retire just above .300 at which point just about anybody could make a case for him as GOAT. We are so lucky at this point in baseball history to see such a great, all around player the way some have witnessed Rose (.303 and 4256 hits) a generation earlier and others have witnessed Willie Mays (.302, 3283 hits and 660 home runs) and a full two generations earlier.

Yes, who else? :) :)

Those are crazy numbers he has recorded and would even be great had he had the opportunity to do all that great stuff in his 20s. I just can't believe somebody could come in at age 27, but then pull off over .300 BA and 3000 hits. It's basically superhuman and just weird if you really break it down.

He says he wants to play until he's 50, but as a part timer he may pull that off but I can't see past age 45 unless he keeps his BA high enough and could still field.

It's hard to compare, but Ichiro is likely the greatest hitter in baseball history.

I think in a perfect world, he would have started in the MLB. Hitting .356 in Japan is definitely someone worthy of being a high 200s hitter in USA or maybe .300 BA. Anyway, he would be north of 4,000 hits right now imho and with at least a Word Series ring and without dispute the greatest hitter in history assuming he would have batted the same from age 27 until now.

But looking at regular season individual players, World Series is a nice thing but not in the mix for Cooperstown as a real factor. You have to be really good day in and day out as an individual. You could be an average player like Javier Lopez on the Giants but still be the man with the most rings in the locker room. You have to have an impressive BA or ERA and lots of games played to get in the hall and in no universe could a 2,500 hit Ichiro not have made it even though they are talking about the hall now with 3,000 hits. But Ichiro was hall worthy so long ago and he's just adding to his own records.

A-Rod who? In their major league debut, Tyler Austin and Aaron Judge go back to back with first at bat home runs.

I haven't enjoyed a Yankees game this much in a long time, and I've never been this excited about their future. Looking forward to their first WS win since A-God carried them in 2009.
