WOW, I've never ever seen so much talk on an iPhone 2 generations away. Wth is going on

I vaguely remember that the weeks leading up to Apple Watch's announcement in Apr '15, the speculations were turning into that the release would be a 6 months to a year later, but with this-and-that features... feels like just journalists/speculators want to throw bunch of darts up and hope to claim partial credits on all sorts of random guesses, from features to time of release.

That's cool and all, but could Apple seriously get developers to get their apps to support 3d touch? It's taken forever for some of the most popular apps to get 3d touch support, for a phone that's supposed to be Apple's flagship device.

And the 2016 iPhone will likely use the greatly improved display tech found in the 9.7" iPad Pro. Which was summed up by DisplayMate as:
"An Outstanding LCD Display. The display on the iPad Pro 9.7 is a Truly Impressive Top Performing Display and a major upgrade to the display on the iPad Air 2. It is by far the best performing mobile LCD display that we have ever tested, and it breaks many display performance records."

Yes, good point and it will include the True Tone feature. You just can't please some people, bless 'em.

I've bought every iPhone since the 4 (one every year anyway), but this is the first time the rumors have me insanely bored. I never use force touch. It's a net negative for me as it adds unnecessary weigth to the 6S Plus. I'd take a lighter and thinner Plus (which doesn't seem to be happening), but besides that I couldn't care less about the ''lack of headphone jack, fantastic'', waterproofing or double flash. And the 6S/6S Plus are plenty fast (the 6 Plus did have some issues on that front, UI fluidity wise).

Really excited for this, want vibrations to have depth, not just tap, but taa....PPPPPPP!

Yeah, I know right, especially the iPhone 7 Plus.

A dual-camera system, 3GB of RAM, improved battery, increased performance, new Taptic Engine, bundled Lightning EarPods, A10 chip, possible waterproofing, possible Smart Connector, dual speakers and faster LTE.

I think you're the joke...

The only remotely exciting things there are the dual camera and waterproofing, which is still pretty banal. Let's be honest, if (but that is still a big if) the rumours turn out to be true, this is going to be quite a lacklustre release, especially for the 4.7" version.

Dual-cameras could be great depending on the implementation (hopefully it's nothing like that awful concept video MR seem to attach to the bottom of all dual-camera articles...), but cameras are pretty good at the moment and I'd be surprised if it's going to make a massive difference. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Improved processor, performance etc is hardly a surprise, and it's not going to make much real-world difference, especially when developers still have to cater for phones many times slower. We've reached a point where 'faster!!' isn't a great improvement any more.

I still think "stereo" speakers less than an inch apart seem pointless, but I'll reserve judgement until I've used them. Lightning EarPods can't seriously be touted as a new feature, just something that's slightly less convenient. I'm also not sure what a Smart Connector would enable, apart from less bulky battery cases.

There's nothing that really catches the imagination, whereas next year sounds much more exciting. New design, OLED, reduction in bezels, new Taptic Engine, integrated TouchID, wireless charging... yes please!

Anniversary edition leaked. Apple goes full retro.

The rumored edge-to-edge display (Touch ID integrated into the display) will be SUCH a significant 2017 update feature (either much smaller device with the same sized display or the same sized device with a much bigger display) that there really is NO internal improvement which could lead me to buy the new old form factor iPhone this autumn.

And yet,
"Another innovation".
o_O

Trouble is, Apple can't win whichever way they do it.

Annual, small advancements added = 'lacklustre'

Everything saved for one big launch every 2-3 years = 'too long between updates'

I'd prefer the latter, rather than adding a bottle opener and a thing for getting stones out of horses hooves, just to have something to claim as new to meet the annual deadline.

This is a holdover phone, they should skip this year's iPhone and invest all of the money into the 7s, but they'd lose customers that switch to Android, and can't capture the fans who've been waiting for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus rather than the 6s and 6s Plus

So basically, the iPhone 7 is shaping up to be a dud (32GB bump aside) for 5S owners like myself, who have been content with the performance of the 5S, but were holding out for something great in 2016. I'm kind of frustrated now, knowing that if I get the iPhone 7 (which will be using a lot of hand-me-downs it seems), that it'll get blown away in 2017 by new form factor, new screen, new tech, etc.

Seeing all this news about the 2017 iPhone and how great it's purportedly going to be is like twisting the knife further. I wouldn't be shocked if Apples sees dismal sales of the iPhone 7 as such (I'm not even convinced I'll be buying it now).

How about a ****ing surprise and awe every year? Sure there's something every year that could be a killer feature

Lol, this years iPhone will be such a major flop. Even the hardcore sheeps will have a hard time justyfying the purchase...

Your probably right, I'll probably still get one, as I always pass my old ones to my relatives. I'm just not going to be excited about it.

Really, at this point... how many people actually care about "more complex tactile vibrations"?

All smartphones nowadays do pretty much everything people want already - at this point, Apple, Samsung and the other manufacturers are just trying to delay the transition to commoditization.

But what I am trying to get certain people to understand is that what Apple are doing next year, cannot be done, every year. They can't come up with a brand new design and two or three groundbreaking features every year. They just won't do it. There's only so much you can do with a smartphone now.

For the people complaining about the iPhone 7, just shut it, if you don't like what you're seeing there's an alternate smartphone you can use instead. Being moody will not change a thing.

Advertising. Drumming up interest, regardless if people (and landfills) can afford to keep up or not.

Of a curious sort, since the inclusion of "may" suggests the product may not have the feature. The other variant to this type of tactic is to say the information was "leaked" which, on a certain level, would actually be a very serious issue if it were real since the company does not want competition* to figure it out or implement it until it has had a chance to siphon customers' wallets first

* competition is good, except for this
