Trouble is, Apple can't win whichever way they do it.

Annual, small advancements added = 'lacklustre'

Everything saved for one big launch every 2-3 years = 'too long between updates'

I'd prefer the latter, rather than adding a bottle opener and a thing for getting stones out of horses hooves, just to have something to claim as new to meet the annual deadline.
I would also prefer latter as well, proven that product will be refined and polished before releasing to the wild.
Why not just developing a long-standing, best phone every two or three years? Saves planet as well!
I don't understand.

In a report corroborating details about Apple moving towards an elongated three-year period between major iPhone refreshes, or a tick-tock-tock cycle, Japanese website Nikkei claimed that 2017 models will be equipped with a "high-performance motor" able to "create more complex tactile vibrations."

Will Apple be licensing this tech from Immersion, or will Apple just use it and hope they don't get caught? :p

SE stands for small edition. The 2016 iPhone will basically be a revision of iPhone 6S. So it doesn't deserve to be called iPhone 7. More like iPhone 6S II.

Yeah, I know right, especially the iPhone 7 Plus.

A dual-camera system, 3GB of RAM, improved battery, increased performance, new Taptic Engine, bundled Lightning EarPods, A10 chip, possible waterproofing, possible Smart Connector, dual speakers, faster LTE and the True Tone display from the iPad Pro 9.7-inch.

I think you're the joke...

fact is, none of this matters to people if its look is the same

Bring on 2017. It's going to be a great new world, at last.

I heard that the iPhone 8 will have 512 GB storage and will come with an groundbreaking RP shielding (Radiation Protected) so it will last for at least one hour when in space. But there are mixed rumors stating that the iPhone 8 will include 6 speakers and that it will be a shocking great device, literally, by adding a steady 220 voltage electric shock to it's owner when new notifications come in.

Your probably right, I'll probably still get one, as I always pass my old ones to my relatives. I'm just not going to be excited about it.
Perhaps wait for it to be announced first? It's hard for me to be excited or not excited over something I know nothing about (rumors don't count).

That's cool and all, but could Apple seriously get developers to get their apps to support 3d touch? It's taken forever for some of the most popular apps to get 3d touch support, for a phone that's supposed to be Apple's flagship device.

+1. I´ve always thought it strange that Apple does not provide incentives for keeping up to date with IOS-features and new devices. They take a 30% cut on every purchase. Why not every year have small rebate for developers who update their apps properly.

Example.
Standard iPhone-app with standard stuff. 30% cut.
+ iPad support, with A-Watch companion, 29% cut.
+ Support for the latest technology, 3D-touch etc, 28% cut.

This list of "incentives" could be renewed/revoked every year and be updated with the latest and greatest IOS-innovations and hardware stuff.

Maybe Apple feels there is enough competition to go around and incentives are not needed - the best app wins so to speak., but plenty of apps drag their feet supporting new cool stuff, not that I use 3D very often, but still.

Incentives people.

For a lot of people, they just want a different design, and for them that's the pinnacle of innovation because they can show it off.

It all makes sense now, under this new tick-tock-tock... were not getting the iPhone 7 this year, but the iPhone 6S2. That explains the similar body design to the 6 and 6S.

I have no use for complex vibrations ... ;)
That's not what she said. :p

On topic: I'm failing to see the "wow factor" of more complex vibrations. Heck people barely use the less complex vibrations now. Some of the other rumored specs seem worthy of either an "about time" or "oh that might be neat". Not sure how much more smartphones in the current form factor can be "innovative" enough to elicit any excitement. They all pretty much have the same capabilities.

So... all of the potential upgrades, enhancements, and iOS 10 additions can't possibly be considered a "major" upgrade for a 2016 release, because it likely won't look different enough. Cosmetics, you mean.

*sigh*

You can vibrate any fancy way you want, doesn't improve the fact that if you don't look at your phone your fingers don't know what key or UI element your fingers are over which has been a big issue with touch screen usability. Vibrating in some fancy way doesn't provide "depth" to a flat surface so it really doesn't improve typing or interaction on the screen.

Apple seems to be trying to make their haptic feedback "engine" somehow improved and different from what everybody else is doing but it's just another vapid claim to innovation of something that has been around for a while by all their competition and Apple is trying to inflate the value of their next phone with something that really doesn't translate into something that improves usability overall.

To be honest the first thing I do with any phone is turn off haptic feedback or touch click noises because at the end of the day it's actually pretty ****ing annoying to have the phone or tablet buzz or blip under your fingers while you are typing or interacting with it, Apple just hasn't caught up to the reality that haptic feedback was a fad technology from 2000's decade that is over now because Apple is late to everything.

Lol, this years iPhone will be such a major flop. Even the hardcore sheeps will have a hard time justyfying the purchase...

I don't know why I'm feeling this way (oh, yes, I do, it's because of all these people hating on the iPhone 7 which will be exactly the same as the iPhone 6s) but I think you'll be the major flop when you see the sales figures for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Too many rumours on the iPhone 2 gens ahead... If they are actually for the iPhone 2017, Apple stock is going down.

My bet is that these are actual characteristics of the iPhone 2016, everyone will think it's a "futuristic" iPhone and sales will go through the roof....
