I appreciate this jump in processor speed as I buy an iPad once every 4 years or so. I don't mind spending a bit more knowing I'm getting a bit more future proofing.

Hey, can I ask you guys what your favorite video and photo editing apps are? I'm a pretty hardcore user of PC tools for such things (Premiere, Photoshop, Ableton) and I'm considering an iPad Pro as I'd love to be able to do some of that stuff on the go. Could always just get a super beefy laptop, but I'm really intrigued with the possibilities of the iPad and its portability (I've never owned one).
Would LOOOVE an iPad version of Live and Protools !!

I apologize if this has already been mentioned in this 8 page thread, but the current ipad pro has a very fast processor

a 10.5" OLED screen would push the iPad Pro price tag far into :p:p:p territory. Think about a $1,300+ base price iPad Pro wifi only

why? oled prices should be coming down as the technology gets mature. A 55" OLED 4K TV can be had for $1599

I'm actually quite interested how quickly Apple has turned round on core count after years of adhering to two... I suppose they've hit the ceiling to a degree on single-core performance, so they've gone with multi-core to carry them forward until the next big innovation
They are far from hitting the per core performance limit, they still get significant speed ups with each new release. However that doesn't mean they won't need those cores for future iOS revisions. The next beg revolution will be in their support of AR / AI technologies and features that bring to mind the Knowledge Navigator video. I doubt we will see one big innovation using all this compute power, rather we will gradually see iOS on iPad morph into something far more powerful.

I know tons of iPad Pro users and it's the first time I hear about someone wanting a SDXC card slot.
one thing they could add would be a mouse mode or a 4 or 5K resolution or a solid state battery, but card slot, what for?
iTunes movies, home movies and whatever else can be stored there. The sad thing with iPad is if you take them someplace with limited internet, you can't stream to the device reliably. Storing files locally solves this problem. Of course Apple could offer an iPad with 4TB of storage but you know they won''t do that.

So pleased it’s sticking with lcd. The burn in issues would be crazy on a screen that large used for productivity tasks.

I was hoping Apple were going to jump over oled and go straight to mled.

If an application is optimized for more cores can use 2 or 2000 cores.
Most applications cannot be optimized in that way. I take it you're not a software developer.
[doublepost=1510804100][/doublepost]
Ryzen has made 6-8 core mainstream and it is getting harder to run cores faster, so the direction now is towards using more cores.
Correct, but the benefit is limited, because most applications cannot be made to use more than four cores or so. For many applications, the practical limit is two cores. This is something the industry will have to face at some point. GPUs do highly parallel computation better than CPUs do, and they probably always will. CPUs going for more cores at lower clock speeds is a bit like a GPU trying to go for fewer cores at higher clock speeds. Simply ridiculous. If CPUs cannot improve their per-core performance, they've reached a plateau.

I purchased a 2017 12,9 Pro which has replaced both my editing computer and my Wacom MobileStudio Pro for intensive edits of photographs up to 50mp. I assume with my current hardware that this model will last me a few years, but damn, this is where computing is really going to affect real workflows.

eight cores will likely NOT produce performance improvements in most real-world scenarios, actually. Most applications cannot take advantage of that many cores.
I wish the iOS will fully leverage the multi core CPU, since I really can't feel the boost of hardware recently.

Where exactly are you supposed to grip that rendered iPad?

I don't know how you hold the iPad but my palm goes at the edges and on the back of the iPad. I don't put my palm on the display (more or less like the photo attached) I have thought of this actually, I know that different people hold iPad differently. I personally will have zero problem with this.

Now that I have found good video and photo editing tools, Multi-tasking is better, and I have native file access to iCloud and Drive, I am having little need for my laptop.

What video editing app do you use? I been hoping for final cut pro X app for iPad but as much as Apple is calling these iPad's Pro, is doing nothing with the final cut.

Does the notch come as an add-on dongle?

You can relax, no need for pills or anything. You would be hugely relieved to know that there may not be a need for a notch. Common sense would say that the bezel may be thick enough to house the sensors.

Now that is assuming you are on the "I hate the notch" camp.

1) No bezels will not change how you hold an iPad. It uses AI to reject palm and other non-intentional touches. You would hold this like normal... even if you are holding part of the screen. That’s fine.

2) Dear God, please please please don’t ever put OS X on an iPad. I would literally stop using iPads altogether if that monstrosity ever happens. I prefer the strategy of keep differentiating iOS for iPad with more powerful features.

3) No... I say noooo other connectors besides lightning. We are moving towards a completely wireless future, another connector would be going backwards. That would be a garbage move. One day I hope to see devices with zero connectors, including no lightning port.

4) My iPad Pro 10.5 is the single best personal computer I’ve ever purchased.
[doublepost=1510817441][/doublepost]Luma Fusion is a sweet video editor for iPad pro

Sure.

More or less answered your question in this post. I actually like this software better than FCPX for quick video edits. It layers in text and other items without making you wait for it to render. Not bad for a mobile app that also works just as well on phones.

that looks good, thanks

This is all well and good, but if the rumours of a late release for this are true, the A11X will be beaten quickly by the release of the A12 equipped iPhone XI.

Apple need to get these iPad updates out much more in line with the telephones.

The Tab S3 has a 10" OLED panel and it's a little cheaper than an iPad Pro. Plus it comes with a stylus in the box.

The current iPad Pro is mega powerful already. Hardly any App tax its processing power at all. So... Why more?

The iPad Pro needs stronger software (and iOS!), not stronger CPU.

Hardware engineers working on stronger CPU are not precluding the software engineers from making stronger software.

When devices get very powerful, it opens up possibilities for software that would have been wasteful or overly taxing before. The scaling and rendering effects on OS X were only viable when computers could produce them without breaking a sweat. Want better multi-tasking in iOS? Ability to run even more “pro” Pro apps? The hardware isn’t a bottleneck for any of the iPad’s current functions, but it also can’t be a bottleneck or limit to anything the software folks want to try out.

That goes without saying... but that was not the point of my post.

My point is that there is a growing gap between what the iPad's hardware could potentially do, and what the iPad's software actually does. Ever since 2015 12.9" iPad Pro, the internals of the iPad are WAY ahead of the Apps and iOS they power up.

I own the 10.5" iPad Pro, and I have not being able to utilize it in any more meaningful way than I did my old iPad Air 2, even though it is like four times more powerful. Why? because the software has not caught up.

Therefore... what is the point of throwing in even more horse power? Until the software catches up with its amazing hardware, the iPad will sadly remain underutilized.

Let's remember, Apple calls OLED their super retina display. Let Apple worry about parts and cost. We, as consumers, simply demand it is all. I have no desire for another ipad until it takes some kind of leap. Face ID isn't it. It's simply another way of unlocking.

It’s time to put macOS onto iPads

I sure hope not. macOS is very stale in my eyes. I moved on to iOS only for my computing needs and it's been great. Continue to build on iOS and bring more and more desktop-like features to the platform. I wouldn't even be surprised if they were developing a completely new OS to replace macOS, with a focus on the transition from Intel to their A-series chips.

Common sense didn't say to make the bezel thicker on the phone, so that is pure speculation.

Certainly not in the "love the notch" camp.

It won't surprise me at all when next year's iPhone X 2 comes out with Apple bigging up the lack of notch and "beautiful unfettered screen, we think you're gonna love it etc.".

Ok, on what iPhone they were thicker, and thicker then what?
iPhone always had thick bezels, they did not get any thicker. They were there due to technology limitations and Apple unlike some other companies did not rush to do a drastic design changes until it was ready.

Safari and my Crossword game will load even faster

Looks like the entry level iPad is better suited for you then.
[doublepost=1510836536][/doublepost]
One potential drawback I see with such slim bezels is that there is going to be constant pressure exerted on the edges of the display when you're holding it.

Personally, I don't push my fingers constantly into the edges of the display when I hold my iPad. I just hold it and my thumbs rest on the side. Everyone's different though.

As long as there's a notch, it's not ready yet.
