iTunes movies, home movies and whatever else can be stored there. The sad thing with iPad is if you take them someplace with limited internet, you can't stream to the device reliably. Storing files locally solves this problem. Of course Apple could offer an iPad with 4TB of storage but you know they won''t do that.

There's already a wide range of local storage products available for iPad/iPhone...lightning connected flash drives, portable wifi drives etc.

Anyone used the more recent iPads can tell me if there is a reason to upgrade performance wise? I still have Air 2 and I don't see a need to upgrade given the capailities of the iOS11. I don't think Safari will work faster, or games will run better. Whats the real advantage here?

Looking forward to my next iPad Pro upgrade ;) .

I still have and like my late 2015 15” rMBP, however my 10.5 iPad Pro has mostly replaced it at this point. Now that I have found good video and photo editing tools, Multi-tasking is better, and I have native file access to iCloud and Drive, I am having little need for my laptop.

In some ways, the iPad Pro has become the touchscreen Mac I have wanted for years.

hmmm...I was under the impression that iPad apps crash when they are heavily used. My ipad Air 2 crashed just by having split screen between two apps. Can it really handle the heavy load?

I prefer unlocking an iPad with Touch ID.

There are many occasions where I want to unlock it while it’s laying on a flat surface. Having to pick it up to direct the screen to my face seems inconvenient and inefficient.

Rumors about the next line of iPad Pros led me to buy a new iPad Pro 12.9 last week. I don't want Face Id until the technology is validated and scrutinized sufficiently. Whether justified or not, I worry a bit about the effect of IR on my eyes over a long period of time. I am also happy with home button and touch id in the current models, and am happy that they retain a phone jack (though that isn't mentioned in the article about the new Pro). I would not want wireless charging on an iPad, as I think all glass on such a large device would be courting disaster, and the batteries on the iPads are so large they already require several hours of charging using the stock 12 watt wired charger. As to the price, the X Phone resulted in a roughly 20% hike, so I'd expect the iPad Pro to suffer a similar rise. With smart keyboard and pen, my iPad last week ran me around $1200 with 256 GB storage. That might result in a comparable new model pushing $1500. It is pleasing so far, and I haven't yet explored all of its features. Perhaps, in another 3 years or so I'll be able to judge whether or not Face ID and homeless screens will be worth an upgrade at whatever the price.

What if you didn't have to pick it up? What if you only had to have your face where you could see the iPad? It can be lying on a flat surface and still work.

The only time Touch ID is better is when you're going to be using the iPad without looking at it. And there's not much you can do with an iPad when you're not looking at it.

On the other hand, if a text notification pops up, you could view the text of the notification without touching the iPad, and with Face ID that text is hidden until you look at it. So if the notification is a text from your sweetheart, it appears when you look at the iPad, but stays hidden when your spouse looks at the iPad.

"For Your Eyes Only: What time is the surprise party for Joe?"

"I'm at the drug store. Did you want the small or the extra small condoms?"

"This Russian lawyer says she has compromising info on Dad's election opponent. Do you want to come to the meeting?"

The only time I have had issues was when the 10.5 was running beta versions of iOS 11, and applications were not exactly updated.

When I have had application crashing issues in the past on iPads (started my use at the iPad 3), it was usually an issue with the app, or, a sign that I needed to erase / build up my iPad from scratch again. But like anything, YMMV, and it can depend on the applications you are using.

I have no experience with Face ID, so if I don’t have to pick it up or hang my head directly over the screen it’ll be okay. There are many times where my iPad is just a second or third device in use. It is sitting beside me and not directly in front of me.

I know tons of iPad Pro users and it's the first time I hear about someone wanting a SDXC card slot.
one thing they could add would be a mouse mode or a 4 or 5K resolution or a solid state battery, but card slot, what for?
I like having an SD slot for processing videos and stills from digital cameras such as the GoPro mobile devices. Though it is generally possible to transfer via the cloud over a wireless connection, that is a relatively slow process for large video files. I currently do this using a non-Apple laptop with an SD slot in order to quickly off load the camera's SD card and wipe the card for further use by the camera. None of Apple's current mobile devices - tablets, phones, or laptops - offer this possibility without the use of auxiliary dongle connected devices. The form factor and high screen resolution would make this an attractive feature for the iPads. I've never tried a bluetooth mouse with an iPad. I'd like to see how mouse functionality would work with iOS. As to solid state lithium-ion batteries, that would be interesting - no heat, longer battery life.

Simply look down at it and it should unlock. I use my X in my kitchen quite often, it is nice to be able to initiate Hey Siri, and pull up something I need without having to unlock my device by hand.

It would be awesome to have that on the iPad, especially if Apple can disable the antique requirement to swipe up.

Thanks. Then maybe Face ID on my iPad might be good. Again, thanks.

I'm very happy with my Air 2 on iOS 11 now that all my apps are updated. It's really a simple personal decision. How fast is fast enough? There are many who would feel suffocated using my Air 2. :apple:

I will upgrade my Air for that.

if they were smart they would make an iPad Pro Mini, reduce the pricing a little and phase out the Mini and the Air. get back to one lineup.

Thank goodness I didn’t buy a new iPad this year next year I’m upgrading to this one

i was going to upgrade for storage but since i haven't yet I figure wait and see if the new ones at least have the OLED screens. I watch a lot of video on my iPad so that would be a plus, especially if they let us stream the 4k HDR from the store. that and fixing whatever the F is going on with the smart keyboard and I'd be happy with a 512GB (although I wouldn't shirk at a 1TB) even without face id etc

Maybe next June at WWDC.

so far they have done them around Feb or March. and they have been basically playing catch up with the tech from the previous fall phone. so I won't be shocked if the same continues for a while

It’s time to put macOS onto iPads

dear lord no. Mac OS is not tablet friendly and I'm fine with that. parity of features between the two would be a different game. certainly I would support plug in support in iOS so we can add templates, fonts etc. but that can be done without shoving a desktop OS into tablets where it doesn't belong

I agree. It's a shame the processor is so 'powerful' but it is hindered in many respects by iOS.

At least for my use case, true multitasking is needed

How about an iPad Mini Pro with a "Pro" level display and a plain old A11?

I literally have the money set aside to give Apple when they release one, but the longer Apple delay the more tempted I am to ditch my Mini 4 for an OLED Samsung tablet. The Mini's display is good for everything except reading books. Its contrast at lower brightness levels is worse than my Nexus 7 2013.

Agreed. The subscription model is great for software companies, awful for users. It's like you're renting the software and not actually buying anything.

It also requires a subscription on iOS. No thanks. And that is my point why a pro-style Pages would be a killer app for the iPad. A lot of people don't want to subscribe to a world processor. I don't need any of the other Office apps.

I LOVE my 2017 iPP, but d*mn that render looks amazing and the 8-cores would be nice for overall better battery and better performance (a real laptop killer) and 4K camera with 60fps to really edit some great videos. The 2017 iPad can already edit 4K 60fps, but’s so much nicer to take the video with the device you’re going to edit it on.
I would love if Apple added 6 or 8GB RAM, (though not REALLY needed right now, it sure would make multitasking even more amazing.)

I really hope the new iPad has this 8-core CPU the new Apple in-house GPU that rivals Xbox specs, a bigger screen or smaller footprint, more RAM, an iPhone 10 camera and FaceID. I’m not all all disappointed with my 2017 iPad, but man if these “rumors” of a 2018 iPad are true, then I’m in to upgrade. Also NO OLED! It’s a stupid technology that has one good feature (deep blacks) other than that it is not reliable, has burn in, and pixels tend to die faster with OLED.

Expectations...
NO OLED.
8-Core A11X Bionic Chip.
4-8GB RAM.
True Depth FaceID Camera (no notch if possible.)
4K 60FPS Camera.
Even Brighter with 700+ Nits.
Even smoother 120Hz for 10ms latency.
Better HDR and Dolby Vision support (the ability to watch upscaled 1080p movies (3k.)
Smaller Bezels that either allow a 13.3” screen or smaller footprint.
Speakers with even better optimization.
Better microphone like iPhone 10.
Bluetooth 5.0.
Apple Pencil 2.0 (for adding to lower latency.)
Better Smart keyboard.
NO WIRELESS CHARGING on such a big device.
Add new Rose/Red Gold color option for bigger iPad Pro.
Add more colors for Smart Covers for larger iPP. (So simple Apple, just DO IT.)

I'm wondering if they do make the physical footprint smaller. If the iPad's got smaller they would have to introduce new Smart Keyboards and the cool benefit of the 10.5" Pro being slightly bigger is that it allows for a "full size" keyboard. If all the iPads got smaller that would drastically reduce the effectiveness of the Smart Keyboard.

Apple's next-generation iPad Pro models released in 2018 will feature octa-core processors, based on Taiwanese supplier TSMC's improved 7nm manufacturing process, according to Chinese website MyDrivers.

The report, citing sources within Apple's supply chain, claims the eight cores in the tentatively named A11X Bionic chip will include three high-performance "Monsoon" cores and five energy-efficient "Mistral" cores.

Like the A11 Bionic chip in the latest iPhone models, which is built on a 10nm process, the A11X chip will reportedly feature TSMC's integrated fan-out wafer level packaging, or InFO WLP for short.

The chip will also presumably include a next-generation M11 coprocessor and neural engine for artificial intelligence tasks, such as processing facial recognition given rumors about Face ID on 2018 iPad Pro models.

The eight-core processor should unsurprisingly result in CPU performance improvements on next-generation iPad Pro models.

Our own Chris Jenkins provided an in-depth look at the architecture of Apple's A11 Bionic chip. He also highlighted details about TSMC's improved 7nm process and advanced InFO packaging process for 2018.

Apple's current 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models have an A10X Fusion chip based on TSMC's 10nm fabrication process.

In addition to gaining Face ID, next-generation iPad Pro models are expected to have an iPhone X form factor with slimmer bezels and no Home button. However, the tablets will reportedly continue to have LCD displays due to yield rates.

I am so glad I did not spent money on this year for any iPad Pro purchases. I am so excited and looking for next year iPad Pro with much better technology improvements. Superb!! Thanks Apple!!
