Wonder how many people already pre ordered not realizing this.

What the hell Apple??!?

This is some BS. The new iPads Pros should have more RAM and were rumored to. That was a given considering the iPhone is 4GB. What the actual hell? I bought this to last. Thinking about canceling my order and I will not be spending that much to get 1TB. Hopefully we can get confirmation. I already spent about three times as much as I did on the original iPad and on the largest model with LTE and that’s not enough to get more RAM? Honestly???

Fragmentation of what? I have no idea what these "fragmentation" comments are referring to, since none give any context. I must not be "in the know" I guess. Is this about Apple offering too many configuration options? Mass storage fragmentation (which I'm not even sure is a problem with APFS)? Virtual memory fragmentation? Somebody dropped a glass on a hard surface? A description of stepping on a landmine?
Well, for one it means years down the road developers will leave the lower capacity iPads behind on new advanced features because the memory is so limiting.

There's also balance. We seem to have some folks who think anything that doesn't require 128GB RAM or access to a render farm to not be pro. On the flip side I think there are a lot of "Pro" workers who are completely overbuying and possibly not even understanding where their true bottlenecks reside (if they even have any).

Pro means different things to different people but if your computer is a tool for your profession (beyond simple communications and document authoring) then I think you're a Pro user. Many of those Pro users could be perfectly capable on an iPad for most of what they do and shouldn't be derided as somehow being less Pro than others just because they don't consume as many resources as the next person.

My own computing tasks range from code compilation to 3D rendering to VR/AR to remote access and administration to all the typical non-pro day to day stuff (docs/spreadsheets, email, IM, VoIP, video chat, watching movies, listening to music, browsing, etc...). I use a variety of tools to get all of that done but my primary computing device when I travel is an iPad Pro, I don't even bring my MBP on the road anymore. It serves me well and isn't a screwdriver I'm using to pound nails :)

The term “pro” has lost its meaning , it has become a marketing term .

I really don’t think you understood my analogy.

Let me give you a better one, one men’s trash is another men’s treasure ;) and don’t take that to mean the iPad Pro is trash, right tool for ones needs . Enjoy your iPad Pro , great ... no awesome device , if it meets ur needs . I have 2x iPad pros . I choose the iPad Pro or iMac Pro..... depending on my needs .....

The gentleman I was communicating with understood my analogy.

Simply put - the 6GB iPad Pro will last , support wise , longer than 4GB with future iOS versions . This for devs is fragmentation. You are now supporting 4Gb and 6GB of the same model

To the people complaining: Do you do anything on your iPad that would warrant 6GB over 4GB? Personally it’s not an issue for me, but just really wondering about others.
Well I was hoping to get a lot of life out of this thing. Full Photoshop for one. You know that lady on stage had to be using a 6GB RAM one. The file itself is 3GB, but anyone who has used photoshop knows there is a lot more in memory such as scratch disks for history, the actual app itself, as well as iOS. No way 4GB RAM device is flying through hundreds of layers at 12,000 x 12,000 pixel resolution.

If RAM is an important spec for you why wouldn't you wait to find out before ordering one?

That is the reason why I waited and declined to buy a 9.7 Pro back then ... I expected 4GB it was only 2.

Sounds like we're saying the same thing then. I also have a MBP and MP (as well as a Windows box for those activities that just can't be done on any Apple OS). They all have places in my electronic toolbox.

I was ready to replace my aging 2015 12.9 iPP and was excited by the more efficient design, Face ID, USB-C. Then I saw the price increases for both the device and the accessories ($200 for the keyboard?!), the fact that there still is no usable file transfer capabilities via the USB-C port outside of photos/video into the Photos app and now that it has the same amount of RAM as my 2015 model?

I may try and grab a refurb 2017 12.9 in the coming days instead—$809 and can keep using my existing Pencil and Smart Keyboard vs $1480 I’d have to spend to get new iPad, Pencil and keyboard.

4GB of RAM on a device that’s supposed to be able to run full Photoshop and autoCAD? Gimme a break. Hard pass for me.

Put me in the minority, but this is a non-issue for me with the ram. I find iPad to be more than sufficient for my uses and tasking. I can understand why some might not appreciate Apples differences with fragmentation across the Ram management, but I still think for the majority, it may not be that much of a ‘Put off’ where someone wouldn’t consider this iPad.

Following Apple's event in Brooklyn this morning, more information has come to light about the new iPad Pros, particularly how much RAM is included in each model of the updated tablets. Using Xcode, developer Steve Troughton-Smith has discovered that the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with 1TB of storage have 6GB of RAM, compared to 4GB for previous generation iPad Pros.

ipad-pro-2018-both-sizes.jpg

This is the first time that any iPad Pro model has supported 1TB of storage, and 6GB is the highest amount of RAM seen on Apple's pro-level tablets, if the data is accurate. For any storage capacity below 1TB, including 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB, each iPad Pro model retains the previous generation's 4GB of RAM. RAM isn't an aspect of the iPad that Apple details to customers, so this information hasn't been confirmed, but the Xcode test appears largely accurate.

At 1TB, Apple sells the 11-inch iPad Pro for $1,549.00 and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro for $1,749.00, making them the most expensive iPad models ever sold. Apple has increased the RAM in both iPad and iPhone over the years. The iPhone X, for example, had 3GB RAM, while the iPhone XS and XS Max have 4GB RAM. The lower-cost iPhone XR retains the iPhone X's 3GB RAM.

I'm sad to see fragmentation like this.

yeah app developers will always develop with the mass device out there

I was considering getting a new iPad, depending on what was announced. Given the pricing and the fact that the iPad can't replace a laptop for me, I am going to pass. For that kind of money, I can get a brand new MB or MBP.

I will keep using my XS Max in lieu of an iPad.

since i go the MAX i've been using it so much i haven't really used my iPad at all i can't justify owning more than the 2017 iPad i have now, which is very nice for the price i paid for it
[doublepost=1540941908][/doublepost]I still like these devices and down the road after some price drops i'll consider a 12.9

As big as the iPad Pro is you would figure that they could easily add another 2 or 4GB of RAM to it when other smaller smartphones coming out of China now have 6 and 8GB of RAM.. How can something 2-3 times the size, twice the price and twice the internal space come with less RAM..?
[doublepost=1540942485][/doublepost]
Apple has always been a little stingy on the RAM side.
RAM is cheap these days. Not sure why they have to go to this extent of stinginess.

I was going to ask "why...?" but they probably want to dupe folks (mainly tech enthusiasts who care about RAM) into getting their most expensive model... shady tactics as usual from Apple.

Not having 6 GB of RAM across the line is a letdown. But duping people? You act like they advertised one thing and are shipping another. There is no human yet that isn't within the order cancellation or return period if they aren't happy with the Random Access Memory in their 2018 iPad Pro.

Because Apple has to firgure out how to upsale people. The day that Apple gets knocked off their high horse you can bet they won’t be doing this stuff.

RAM is so cheap android devices at a third of the price throw 8GB in because it's easier than worrying about it.

Why mess about with this level of penny pinching? Because Tim.

Because I saw a presentation where an Adobe rep loaded a 3GB PSD with 150 layers at 12,000px x 12,000px. Anybody who knows anything about computers knows that the file size isn’t the only thing loaded into RAM. There is the histogram scratchdisk, Photoshop itself and iOS. I would be absolutely shocked and amazed if she did that on the 4GB model and not the 6GB. To add to this, the supply chain rumors pointed to 6GB. Between this and the claim by Apple that the MacBook Air has four times the pixels as the old one when in fact it does not and fits less UI on the screen, Apple seems to be very misleading today.

I can’t see anything wrong with that, but strange they do not mention, as that would surely increase sales of the most expensive 1TB iPad Pro.

That is what I have ordered, so am well happy I am getting more than I realized for my money

So cheap. It should be 6GB DRAM for the base model and 8GB for the higher end but considering starting price of $800 it should be 8GB minimum.
