Great update on the Mac Mini but prices are bit hard to swallow. Expensive.
The base model is pretty hard to justify with only 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. You'll need to update these two to the next tier that puts the machine on the $1.2k range. Urghhh

The Mac mini was introduced as the "most affordable Mac ever" at $499 USD.

https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2005/01/11Apple-Introduces-Mac-mini/

Now the base price is $799 USD. It may be nearly twice the price, but has over 10x the power as the original.

However, here in Canadian pricing, the base price is $999, and that's too much for a "budget" Mac. It's clear that Apple is trying to build up their prowess in the "Premium Computer" niche, and leaving the budget computers for the competition.

I was really hoping Apple would be more aggressive with the pricing, but I guess they'd need to compromise on the specs at the same time. So they went with better specs.
Well, you know what you have to do. Either conquer USA or let USA conquer Canada. Problem solved.

The best thing about the new MBA is the TouchID.

The keyboard is a step backward (strike 1), the SD slot is gone (strike 2) and now the MBA only comes with the poky i5 chip (and you're OUT!).

If I could get a 15" MBP with just TouchID instead of the TouchBar I would have upgraded already. I'm guessing I'll max out a Mini as my everyday and keep my old MBA for travel.

The "Macbook" line is way too confusing now. Prices are officially reaching "sorry I am done" level for what you get, especially with those CPU's that are just weak until yo get to the Pro levels. I seriously think Apple just wants you to get a iPad Pro vs the Macbook/Macbook Air.

The moment they release Xcode for the iPad, is the official time of death for the Mac.

I am loving the Mac Mini so far (at least in terms of potential). I didn't expect a discrete GPU, nor do I need one - but am curious how the 6-core i7 and 32 GB RAM would do with an eGPU. Don't buy Macs for gaming but what if..

I'm totally fine with the price.

Not only that, but you'll be stuck with the same overall experience albeit somewhat quicker - don't forget to factor a new monitor into your figures. I'm running a 1Tb 2012 Mac Mini with Thunderbolt display. To upgrade both of these to something that handles 4k isn't going to be worth it for me ($CDN3000+ for the Mini alone!!)...seriously considering an iMac now, even a refurb one.

came here to read disappointment from an update that's been asked for, was not disappointed. The Mac Mini (sadly) is the best Mac Apple make now with the amount of ports and upgrade-ability. People want to spec it out and have prices never change. Go buy a Intel NUC

If the RAM does not prove to be user serviceable, thats a hard NO on the mini. 1680 CAD (x1.13 for tax= 1898.40) for the 64 GB ram upgrade. Apple charges more for RAM than other manufacturers charge for whole gaming computers....

A poky i5 that is fanless aka "Y" CPU model which = sloooooow/throttle.

Does it stop you from using an external usb c drive? So why the belly aching over user upgradable internal storage?
4 USB-C ports. Connect 4 USB-C hubs for 28 ports. Attach 8 TB drive to each port. That's 224 TB for less than £6,000. Or you can wait until the Seagate 60TB SSD drive is released. They are estimated to be £20,000 each, so you can have 1,680 TB for about £560,000.

The Mini has a built-in power supply (instead of an ugly external power brick). And substantially better I/O (four 40 Gb/sec TB-3 ports, two USB-A 3), a 10G ethernet option, multiple 4K display output, and Bluetooth 5.0. And, of course, macOS.

My old Mac Mini has an external Power Supply, and I actually prefer that?

1: Power Supplies are very efficient heaters ;-) I'd actually prefer to keep it external to eliminate a source of heat inside the tiny computer. Especially now that the new Mini has desktop processors?

2: I'm on the 3rd power supply for one of my old Minis. Easier to swap out the external power supply than an internal?

3: I'm sure the cord from the Mini to the external power supply would be long enough that you'd likely never see the ugly power supply? I don't see mine?

Shrug.

Man, I really want the Mini, but not being able to swap out the storage my be a deal-killer. Makes it WAY too expensive.

The only disappoint are the pricing.

$1200 for an entry Macbook air with 8GB Ram?? No thanks.

Although the Mac Mini looks nice, a usable version will cost you $1200, almost triple the price of $499 that used to cost and a fully loaded one $4100.00 Is that a Mac Mini Max? What a joke...

Sadly Apple is becoming into a luxury computer brand.

Unfortunately, for long time Apple users, Tim Cook greed is out of control...

For me it's all about the prices / repair prices / QA. New Macbook Air is a nice device, it has it's pros / cons. But 128gb SSD for this price is a joke. New iPad is a nice device, but keeping 10.5 for almost the same price and raising price for another $100 is a joke. Raising prices of the new Pencil / Smart Keyboard is a joke, because why? Some exceptional new technology there? Nope...

And of course, the product line is a mess.

So nice update, but insane pricing. However we all expected this, so no surprise.

I wish there was an external ssd case with the shape and color of the mini, so you could just stack it up...
Excellent idea. But also, with SSD drives the manufacturer isn't limited to 2.5" or 3.5" space; you could get an awful lot of SSD storage into that case.

Why no Cinema Display, Apple?
LC Retina displays. 4K = £620, 5K = £1,120.
