Bottas to stay at Mercedes for 2020 season.

Ferrari aside, the Constructors Championship is what matters to the factory teams so keeping Bottas makes sense as he's a known quantity who can reliably score points to secure the CC for Mercedes every year.

Ocon replacing Hulkenburg at Renault.

Shows how competitive seats are in Formula One - not worth being part of a factory driver program if you don't get a drive.

Now where does the Hulk go? I'm hoping Haas to replace RoGro - and Guenther seemed a bit cagey talking to Sky during FP1 this morning.

Sure, Bottas may not be a top driver at a top tier team (and let’s face it, he’s got an incredible teammate to challenge in Hamilton) but he’s shown a willingness to help out the team and he’s been fairly consistent as you pointed out

There was another piece I read today too speculating that. Hulk and KMag have a history on the track (and off) but hulk seemed open to working together. Alfa and Williams were also speculated.

Ferrari's looking strong so far. Also looks like Racing Point has done some nice work over the summer. Perez is flying

Agreed. Should be a good race. Ferrari seems to keep the speed in the corners as well. Looks like some very productive aero work during the break. Albon spent all of P2 working on his race setup as he is starting from the back anyway. I have a feeling he will be moving up quickly with the new Honda engine in his RB15.

It's Leclerc's race to loose IMO. :apple:

And, sadly, he will...

Looks like Sainz won’t be making it past Q1. Ferrari just smoked everyone, but obviously Mercedes haven’t hit party mode yet. Kinda pulling for a Ferrari 1-2 to give some hope for an exciting second half.

Ferrari definitely faster in the hot conditions, but it is supposed to be a fair bit cooler for the race...still - fingers crossed for a Ferrari 1-2 at the Checkered.

Horrendous accident in the F2 race. Hope everyone is ok.

Edit: Unfortunately not. Hubert has died from his injuries. RIP :(

Looks like he lost the back end at the top of Eau Rouge, hit the barriers and ended up in the middle of the track where he was collected by another car. Split the car in two and didn’t look good when I first saw it earlier.

RIP.

I've never seen that much damage to a modern F2 car. It looks like the monocoque split in half. Just sickening. Safety has improved so much that it feels almost impossible for drivers to die today.

The engine is designed to split away from the monocoque under the air box in big impacts but that one was huge. The survival cell was intact but the g forces must have been enormous.

RIP. Only 22, too. Still a child. 22 days away from his 23rd birthday at that.

As an engineer you would know that just because the vehicle (or what's left of it) stops, the body itself doesn't stop. Blunt force trauma is likely the cause. Your insides slam into your muscle walls after you come to a dead stop, and at those speeds and G-Forces, you're... for lack of a nicer description, quite ****ed.

Terrible news. So sad, so young.

Used to happen quite a lot, but these days safety has improved massively.

My thoughts are with his family.
The crash reminds me of something you'd witness in the 80s and 90s. Not later. The halo has been credit for saving a few lives already, especially the young LeClerc. This is just a freak incident. You could use aerospace tubing around the monocoque, but death is inevitable sometimes.

Yep, redistributed kinetic forces travel from the main structure and usually through the driver. Motorsport is dangerous and it’s the risk that makes it exciting. However this sort of outcome is always a bitter blow.

Those two are going to feel awful for a very long time. It hasn't been a good week for sports in general. A few days ago, an American baseball player's brother-in-law who is likely mentally ill decided to kill his mother, the player's mother-in-law, the player's wife and his infant son. He was caught on a separate charge of public nudity and running from police who tried to apprehend him.

As far as the F2 machines go. I'd say they're all built exceptionally well because TRD82 knows a thing or two about their designs, but also has mates who work for these teams and at higher levels. You can build something exceptionally well, but there will be weak points, and when struck at a precise angle and speed, all hell breaks loose.

Damn. That’s terrible news.

It’s crazy how horrific some crashes can be, like the F2 (F3?) race last year where the car caught air and landed in the stands. Some drivers are lucky enough to walk away.

And then there’s this and the incident this week with Jesse Combs (while technically not a race car driver, she was attempting to set a land speed record)

For those wanting something to do before the F1, WEC is starting 32 minutes from this post. Should be a good opening hour.

Nice opening hour on the broadcast hearing everyone speak about Anthoine.

A lot of people pulling for Charles in this one to get his first win and pay tribute, turn one coming shortly!

Delighted for Charles. He really deserves that win having come so close twice before. i am a Lewis fan and was backing him to pass on the last lap but I am happy the race was stopped and he did not get the chance. Lewis walks away from this in a stronger position for the championship. i think we should expect to see more wins from Charles.
