McLaren to have Mercedes engines from 2021

😮

Good news for McLaren - not sure where this leaves Renault as currently they would be the only team with their engine. Are Renault pulling out?

Taking me back to my childhood. McLaren Mercedes just sounds right. Now we need them to bring back the silver and black livery, get Mikka back from his sabbatical, and get Ron Dennis on the phone about making a return, and we're in business...

My theory: Merc has given up on their car and is completely focused on next year since they've essentially wrapped up both championships already. So, Ferrari keeps developing their car, gets a few wins, and Toto plays up the whole "Ferrari is faster" angle to keep the rulemakers from targeting Mercedes like they did Ferrari after the F2004's dominance. Then they use their head start to dominate the first half of next season too.

Could be...

I'm reading about the 2021 McLaren/Mercedes deal right now...

Pretty entertaining race so far. Fantastic start with Seb & Charles, then heartbreak.. and somehow Hamilton grabs the lead from the safety car. The Ferrari does look fast but it will be really something if Charles can come from behind to win this

Mercedes started on the mediums and were always going to be slower than the Ferrari's at the start. I assume the strategy was to stay out longer and hope for a safety car which worked out very well for them. I will be interesting to find out what happened to Seb. Maybe they have been pushing those engines to the limit to get their straight line speed.

Entertaining race. Looked like a Ferrari 1-2 banker. Next thing you know it’s a Mercedes 1-2.
Ferrari gambled on fresh rubber and lost 2nd to Bottas. I think I’d have kept him out there and see what he could do from the SC restart.

There’s a new Mazda3 for TCR. So it is likely the first SkyActiv-X racer will appear there.

There has been work going on developing combined cycle range extenders.

Even the army are working on fuel cells and they've had inefficient conventional turbine tanks for decades.

What is the average power output of an F1 engine during the fastest qualification run?

I guess what they could do immediately is to keep the ICEs but change the cars to series hybrids, as parallel will eventually disappear.

Maybe it would be more useful to switch to series-parallel, as that has not taken over yet.

The MGU-K provides about 20% of the power. It seems it could be increased to up to 50%.

Anyone excited for 9pm (est) qualifying coming up in a few hours? I usually pvr Suzuka and watch it the next day but I might be able to catch the qualifying live.
