Ferrari, oh Ferrari. They just left Leclerc out in the cold on this one. Can't they see that he is the future right now and Leclerc is the better driver. They just need to treat him fairly and let him and Seb actually race.

I can't believe the reasoning behind signing Grosjean. He needs to find somewhere else to try to race. Maybe demolition derby is more his style.

Ferrari had to pit Vettel to cover the incoming cut from Verstappen, and to try and get Lewis. If they had pitted Leclerc first then it would've meant a Ferrari 1-4, as Vettel would've lost to Verstappen. That would've left Leclerc exposed to Verstappen, who is a bit of a wild card still.

Ferrari absolutely made the right call. What they didn't expect was such a good out lap from Vettel that he managed to get both Lewis and Leclerc in one go. Ferrari couldn't really have pitted any earlier as it would've left too long on the second set of tyres. Also, because Lewis and Max would've matched Leclerc when he pitted, thus leaving Vettel on track, and again, ended up in a 1-4.

Ferraris tactic got a 1-2. It was the right call. It just happened that Vettel pulled out a stonking out lap. For a change!

That article is a painful read. The author doesn't appear to be able to analyse what actually happened and why. Or what the alternative outcome would've been.

Massively disagree. If the teams knew the undercut would be so powerful, why didn't Mercedes do it? Or Red Bull? Truth is that they pitted Vettel early to cover Verstappen and Vettel did a monster out lap which was much faster than they expected.

Conspiracy theories are a house of cards.

My only F1 conspiracy theory concerns Grosjean: they keep him in to ensure people watch Drive to Survive. :p

Worth remembering that Mercedes and Red Bull couldn't pit, because Ferrari backed the park up. There was no gap to get a car into if they pitted. As soon as there was a gap, Ferrarri pitted to cover Verstappen, as you said.

True, but again if they knew the strength of the undercut then why didn’t Merc pit when there was the same gap?

Genuinely I think it was an honest mistake. Ferrari are far from strategic geniuses. They just got a little lucky with how it all planned out and that was that.

Merc arguably gambling on a safety car with Ham, so on another day it could have been different and worked out for them. But then they could have split the strategies & Bottas went in earlier if they had the undercut in mind. It was all a bit slow to react.

One thing we’ll hopefully agree on: it was a pretty boring race.

Toyota won Le Mans with a full hybrid. Maybe they will add compression ignition.

McLaren to have Mercedes engines from 2021

😮

Good news for McLaren - not sure where this leaves Renault as currently they would be the only team with their engine. Are Renault pulling out?
Isn’t that where they were before they switched to Honda?
Also by 2021 I’d rather have a Ferrari engine.

Good Ferrari and Mercedes battle in qualifying.
Different strategies tomorrow could make it interesting.

My theory: Merc has given up on their car and is completely focused on next year since they've essentially wrapped up both championships already. So, Ferrari keeps developing their car, gets a few wins, and Toto plays up the whole "Ferrari is faster" angle to keep the rulemakers from targeting Mercedes like they did Ferrari after the F2004's dominance. Then they use their head start to dominate the first half of next season too.
