Until the actual sensors get bigger in these cameras they will always be 1990’s technology. The crop factor of even an iPhone XS Max is rediculous.

What hassle? You already have a bunch of lightning cables I’m sure. Would be more of a hassle to switch to usb c. I hope they don’t
It’s not a big deal for people who just have an iPhone, but it’s a hassle for my situation. I have a 2018 iPad Pro and an iPhone X. Neither have headphone jacks so if I want to use wired headphones I need two adaptors. I can’t buy Lightning or USB-C headphones because they only work on one device. I also need two cables when I travel for charging, though I can use the same charger.

It’ll be nice when everything is uniform. USB-C is much more convenient and versatile than Lightning.

If the 2019 iPhones have USB-C and major camera improvements, I would upgrade my XR and my wife's 7 Plus. Otherwise, we are both happy to hold on to our phones. She's not nearly as in to tech as I am but does appreciate good camera performance.

I never cared less for a product or company. Apple is “meh”. I used to hang on every word of a press release. Now. Meh. Whatever. I’ve moved on to drones, IPA beer, fine bourbon and mountain biking. Most consumer tech is “meh”. Apple has seen its day in the sun. Tim f*cked up what Steve handed to him. I probably would have too. Life moves on.

Yet here you are....

First image looks like it has a Touch ID ring in the middle of the camera.

Second picture looks like an Apple Watch screen on the back.

Hideous design.

Apple's 2019 iPhones could feature upgraded front-facing and rear cameras, redesigned internal layouts, and Lightning ports, according to new details known leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer (aka OnLeaks) shared with Indian site ComparaRaja.

Over the course of the past week, Hemmerstoffer has shown off two possible prototype iPhone designs Apple is allegedly working on, featuring different three camera layouts. Today he's offering up additional information on the cameras we can expect to see in the triple-lens model, which rumors have suggested will be a 6.5-inch OLED iPhone XS Max successor.

One of the alleged triple-lens 2019 iPhone prototypes
One rear camera will be 10 megapixels, while a second will come in at 14 megapixels. The details of the third sensor are apparently unknown. Right now, the iPhone XS and XS Max use two 12-megapixel cameras, one that's telephoto and one that's wide-angle.

Apple will presumably continue using both telephoto and wide-angle lenses, but this information isn't included in the report. The renderings shared by Hemmerstoffer allege that Apple is still trying to decide between a horizontal triple lens camera layout or a square-shaped layout that would position the lenses vertically but staggered.

The front-facing TrueDepth camera system will reportedly use a 10-megapixel camera, up from 7 megapixels in the current version. Prior rumors and renderings have suggested the TrueDepth camera will take up less space on the iPhone's display thanks to optimizations, allowing Apple to implement a smaller notch.

Internally, the 2019 iPhone with a triple-lens camera is said to have a redesigned internal layout with a "less L-shaped battery" that's "almost a big square" with the "logic board located above the battery."

The other the alleged triple-lens 2019 iPhone prototype
Hemmerstoffer says that the two prototype designs he's shared renderings for do not feature USB-C ports, despite rumors suggesting Apple could transition from Lightning to USB-C in the 2019 iPhones.

All of the information from Hemmerstoffer is sourced from these two alleged prototype iPhones that he says are "still in the EVT stage" and have yet to be finalized, so it's not clear yet if this information is accurate.

None of these details have been confirmed by a second source at this point in time either, so we'll need to wait for further leaks to get a clearer picture of the features included in the 2019 iPhone lineup.

Not sure what the fascination is with usb c for the phone. As others have said it offers no technical benefit, phones now have wireless charging (personally never use the port now). C is larger as well.

On the Mac and pad it offers an all in one port solution (although dubious benefit on pad at the moment). Unless Apple plans to do a Samsung style Dex solution, not seeing why they’d want to change.

Why do people insist on Apple installing a bulkier port on an ultra-thin device? USB-C on the iPhone isn’t going to happen.
Or eventually launch an entirely new, incompatible port - to generate cash with MFI certifications, 0,15% faster chargers and 256 new dongles
Oooahh, Tim is getting soo excited...

After the transition of iPad Pro, there must be type-c usb on the next iPhone model.

Why must? Personally I feel like the iPad Pro is the anamoly rather than the future direction because apple wanted it to appear more “pro” by giving it a port found on macs. The rumored iPad mini has the lightning port, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the new iPhone does too.

It should have USB C. Apple may be slow but they are not that stupid.
They are not stupid, which is why it makes little sense to put it on iPhones. There is no discernable benefit in putting a larger and thicker port and removing compatibility with previous lighting accessories.

The USB-C port is marginally larger than Lightning. Apple managed to fit it into an iPad Pro thats only 5.9 mm thick (vs. 7.7 mm XS and 8.3 mm XR) and just about every Android OEM has managed to ‘squeeze’ it into their products for the last few years so I’m quite confident Apple could manage. ;)

But knowing Apple, adopting the standard that they’re already implemented in 2 of their own major product platforms, the standard that the rest of the technology industry is or has moved to, is way to user friendly so it’s unlikely they’ll switch. ;)

I won’t both upgrading this year without USB C. My 8+ works just fine until Apple makes the change.

Same. I won’t be purchasing any new hardware that doesn’t utilize USB-C—no computers, phones, external HDD/SSD, cameras, headphones, etc. Too much of a pain in the ass to carry so many different cables, dongles, adapters.

It MUST have USB-C. I think prototypes may have lightning ports temporarily since they're used to working with them.

It "MUST", why?

There will be no USB-C. Just AS Apple removed the mini-jack, the powerconnector is next to go, in favour of wireless. After that, the sim-tray, in favour of esim.

I actually think it will be a toss-up which goes first. Wireless will be dependent on WiFi and 5g to replace the speed of a physical connector, as well as improvements in Qi charging efficiency. The eSIM is fighting the carriers. It's going to be an uphill battle to replace both, but I definitely don't see Apple moving to USB-C on the iPhone.

If Apple was intending to stick with lightning, I can't imagine that they would've used USB on the iPad Pros. A fragmented product line is just stupid because it means more cables if you travel with an iPad and an iPhone.

The iPad Pro and the iPhone have nothing in common. The iPad Pro is being positioned as a PC replacement, for which USB-C is the undisputed standard. The iPhone is a mobile computer used in every walk of life, in need of being completely sealed up and self-contained. Wireless is its future, not a PC standard connector. A fragmented product line doesn't matter in the least when the vast majority of the iPhone base doesn't even own an iPadPro or Mac.

Unfortunately you essentially represent the unicorn of iPhone users. Apple is focused on the larger customer base which doesn't need USB-C on the iPhone at all.

It must have USB-C.

Again, "Must" why?

No USB-C is obvious from a technical standpoint.

There are no advantages to having USB-C on the iPhone. Users aren't attaching an external monitor or storage to the iPhone.

In short, iPhone isn't iPad. It has no use for USB-C.

I agree with you. I am unsure why so many people are screaming for usb-c? What is the benefit? I do not see a single one. They should change the usb-a to usb-c to allow compatibility with the newer macbook etc, but should keep the lightning port on the other end and the iPhone should retain lighting port untill there are clear advantages, like for instance using it to connect to an extranal drives for backups etc. otherwise it is a mute point to have it.

Just because everything else does?

I reckon one possible reason as why Apple could hold back on USB-C with iPhone could be because its more portable, than say an iPad..

You don't hold your iPad most times while your out and about, you hold your phone., and no one likes dongles hanging off as your walking round the street.

iPad would be more of a reason to go with USB-C because your standing stationary most of the time and bigger overall.

I agree, but the vast majority of people are not aware of the limitations and don't care.

Yup, and I had a bunch of 30-Pin cables when the iPhone 5 adopted Lightning—so what? Changes are made and we all adapt. By your logic we should never ditch Lightning, ever.

See my answer above. USB-C is more versatile than Lightning. It also represents the future of all tech. Even nearly all of Apple’s other major products have adopted it. If rumors that iOS 13 will open up its capabilities on the iPP, why not also on the iPhone. But let’s just stick with an old proprietary connector indefinitely....;)

Yes, it means in the short term we all have to replace some Lighting cables—people will get over it. But it’s also more likely as every day passes that we already have some USB-C cables and going forward, as it becomes ubiquitious’ll need fewer of them since all of our devices would use the same cable.

I’m done carrying a bunch of different types of cables. Any new product upgrades will be using USB-C. If Apple doesn’t adopt it for iPhone in the next year or two, my next phone won’t be an iPhone.

The versatility of usb c does not outweigh the many cons that switching would entail. And since we live in the present, an iphone i buy in the present will be judged by how obnoxious it is to use in the present. This is precisely why removing the headphone jack is nonsense and why switching from lightning to usb c would (rightly) have the tremendously bad optics of being anti consumer hog wash. An iphone with the capability of accessing external storage sounds cool, but its not worth it at all. I can see apple giving their “pro” products usb c in the ipad lineup but i cannot see usb c being a ubiquitous transition for ios products that subverts the thriving ecosystem of lightning accessories when it seems they are heading towards an iphone that charges exclusively wirelessly in the next 5 years anyways. Lightning is also a better design than usb c is anyways, as john gruber puts it “I also think Lightning connectors are more pleasant to use. They’re easier to plug in and easier to pull out. Lightning is a simple, elegant male/female design. USB-C, like all previous USB versions, is a weird male connector with female slot / female port with a tiny little male connector inside. USB-C certainly has some technical advantages over Lightning, but iPhones don’t need those features. The elegance (and I suspect durability) of Lightning probably matters more to Apple.”

It had BETTER have USB-C or Apple won't be getting a single penny from me. The IO inconsistency across Apple's product lines right now is totally bonkers, and it results in a terrible experience for customers. Apple should have put USB-C on its iOS devices the same year they added it to Macs.
[doublepost=1547701060][/doublepost]
iPhone isn't iPad. It has no use for USB-C.
The "use" is product consistency. It's important for product lines to share the same IO.

In recent years, Apple has abandoned their "It just works" philosophy and replaced it with "Dongle all the things." And it's pissed off customers for long enough. Consistency consistency consistency! It's important! My iPad should use the same cable as my iPhone. And my iPad and iPhone should have the same port as my computer. THAT is forward-thinking. THAT is the definition of "It just works." On the contrary, intentionally putting different ports on all your products is ANTI-consumer. It's ANTI-"It just works." We need consistency. We're sick of this Lightning nonsense. Lightning is a port that became antiquated the day USB-C was introduced on the MacBook. It has to go.
