And STILL people defend the notch. Stoppet!
And STILL people bitch about the notch.
What a dumb argument to still be having.
And STILL people defend the notch. Stoppet!
Wasn’t that the point I just made? Not sure what you mean by “goes to show”.I wasn't born yesterday so yes I am. It's external then internal, external, internal. The notch is clearly an either year upgrade. It's an internal component that is almost yearly upgraded (camera's) yet does have an external aspect to it. Most recent example of fixing an undesirable aspect would be the 2016 to 2017 MBP keyboard.

Kind of goes to show that even in their own app design, the ears are an undesirable design aspect.
I'm never buying a phone with a notch. Come on Apple, you can do better than this!! (Or can they?!)
Glad I saved the receipt for my X, that went back to the store the next day.
Personally I never notice the notch, but I thought it would be interesting if they moved the notch to the bottom and double it up as a home button.
Then the top of your screen would be edgeless
It's not the same as before when apple removed Firewall or Floppy drives. They were virtually dead anyway.
USB ports are in everything with virtually everything now having a USB connector. The iPhone is a perfect example. If they were that drive all the iPhones would be USB-C. The Apple Watch would charge via USB-C. They don't, they use normal USB. Apple should have used USB-C and USB on their MacBook Pro's. 2 USB, 1 USB-C. Then slowly reduce the USB ports. 1 USB 2 USB-C then eventually just USB-C. Instead they annoyed the hell out of the Pro users!
No, if they keep even 1 normal usb port, it will sliw down development of usb-c hardware. Apple should have shipped the iphone x with a usb-c lightning cable. But i still agree on them going all-in on usb-c with the mac. In 1 year time, you will not miss the regular usb on the mac anymore. For now, i agree it is inconvenient, but necessary for transformation to the usb-c standard. If they made one with just one regular usb port, transformation would be delayed, and there would be demand for 2 regular usb ports instead of 1, hmm why not 3? why even support usb-c anyway? There are just a few products that support it available, etc, etc.
The other brands for pc’ s en laptop, are just waiting for enough usb-c support, and will drop regular usb ports, when there are enough products that use usb-c. Which will be plenty in the future, because of the choice apple made.
So in other words : let apple do the dirty work.
The notch is such a non issue. The phone looks better than the rest of the competition imo.
Those that are still complaining about the notch either don’t own the phone or never even used one.
The notch will go down in history with the following Apple designs.
Whoever approved the notch must have had some involvement with these designs.
- A mouse which has to be charged upside down
- A iPhone case with a built in battery
- A pen that has to be charged via a lightning connector
- An iPhone 5C case with holes which looks ridiculous
- A mouse that looks like a hockey puck
Apple do some great designs but when they get it wrong, they get it seriously wrong!
Fast forward a few years when the iPhone X3 is out and everyone will go on about how bad that bloomin notch was on the iPhone X.

- A mouse which has to be charged upside down
Charging it once a month makes this a non-issue. Even if you forget, it's 2 minutes charging for 9 hours usage. Complete non issue.
You forget to charge it. You need to use the mouse. Oh, you can't while it's charging. Because it charges via the bottom! That is not a great design!
- A iPhone case with a built in battery
What's wrong with that? It's a case with a lump! Hunchback would have loved it!
- A pen that has to be charged via a lightning connector
Again, what's wrong with that? How would you use the iPad with the pen sticking out the bottom? You would end up puncturing your groin area!
- An iPhone 5C case with holes which looks ridiculous
I think they were kinda quirky. Looked horrible in photos but not so bad in the flesh. They showed bits of text and logo. A very poor design!
- A mouse that looks like a hockey puck
Now that's a valid point but still, you had to go back 20 years for that one.
+ bothering MacBook users with multiple incompatible MagSafe standards (with associated mini-dongle converting metallic plugs) before the magic transition to non-MagSafe at all.The notch will go down in history with the following Apple designs.

I worked repairing laptops for a few years before at Europe's largest laptop repair centre and the most common faults were either cracked screens or damaged DC sockets. MagSafe was a superb design. It was brilliant!+ bothering MacBook users with multiple incompatible MagSafe standards (with associated mini-dongle converting metallic plugs) before the magic transition to non-MagSafe at all.

You don't have to use it while it's charging, because it only needs charging once a month. And if you forget, can't you wait literally 2 minutes?
It's a case with a lump! Hunchback would have loved it!
Right, and? Have you actually seen one? They don't look bad at all IRL.
How would you use the iPad with the pen sticking out the bottom? You would end up puncturing your groin area!
You don't have to charge it via the iPad, but if you're on the go and don't have your charging cable, it's a good backup.
They showed bits of text and logo. A very poor design!
Fair enough.

Removing it was the dumbest thing!

My boss wants the project done now! Not 2 mins later! Now! Sorry, I have to wait till my battery charges!
Yes, it's even worse than the photos!
Yes, so you just puncture your groin while on the go! Great design!
Thank God Jonny is back at the helm. I’ve got no doubt he hates this stupid notch as much as the rest of us.
"My boss wants the project done now! Not 2 mins later! Now! Sorry, I have to wait till my battery charges!"
Your fault for not charging the mouse when you got the many reminders of a low battery. And I'm sure your boss will wait 2 minutes, you're really pushing the boat out with your 'real world' scenario..
"Yes, it's even worse than the photos!"
Not in my opinion. It looks and feels quite nice.
"Yes, so you just puncture your groin while on the go! Great design!"
Did you even read what I wrote? Seemingly not.
I suspect there are two design teams.Do you seriously believe that Ive somehow wasn't involved in or leading the discussion/decision making of the X's design?
I am on the go, I have an iPad and a pen. How else do I charge it. Damn it! I got punctured again!

Actually, it doesn't zoom in the standard setting. If you look at the reference image I originally posted, the top one shows how 16:9 video (iphone and tv standard aspect ratio) looks when played regularly. The white area on the sides of the red rectangle (video) are the black areas you're talking about. And yes, they do blend in with the notch nicely, almost making the display look like a non "X" iPhone.
It's when you use the zoom feature in order to get the video to take up the entire screen (the middle image in my reference) where you ultimately end up losing roughly 21% of the video (areas cut off at top/bottom and notch).
What puzzles me is the (software) design choice Apple have made, to amplify the appearance of the notch, rather than disguise it.
For me, this is a far more attractive screen implementation:
View attachment 747167
..but I know Apple disagree, and have actively advised developers not to design like this, but to preserve the notch appearance. Puzzling.
Plug into the iPad.
You know, the only power source you have on you when travelling with an iPad. How would you charge it if it didn't have a lightning plug? Oh you wouldn't be able to. See, this is why it's a good design, not a bad one.
"Look online, lots of posts about how bad it looks."
