Is there anything preventing the next iPhones from adopting USB-C? If they think headphone ports should be obsolete, they should consider making the lightning port obsolete as well. It just doesn't make sense to have more than one type of port on any device, ever. Also, when it comes to headphones, if they think people should adopt wireless headphones, they should make a pair that prioritizes sound quality above all, none of this Beats crap.

Was there anything that prevented the last 3 models of iPhones/iPads from adopting USB-C?

So frustrated by this news though. I picked up an iPhone 8, will probably try not to upgrade (or buy an iPad) until USB-C is standard.

I plug in card readers to my iPad/iPhone so the main and only reason I want USB-C over Lightning is I want to stop seeing the "This device draws too much power" error message.

The Need for Speed

Switching iphones to USB-C would be tragic in a world full of USB-A charging ports, cables and accessories. I don’t want to have to replace a dozen Lightning cables and accessories when I don’t even own one USB-C device. The vast majority of Apple customers own Lightning and USB-A products. USB-C only applies to a small minority of Apple customers worldwide. When I finally upgrade my iPhone it will be to Qi charging which is available at far more locations than USB-C

As long as Apple gives us a dongle, that's their excuse to do whatever they can. If the option is there, then i tdoesn't matter what they supply as long as you can connect it somehow.

An 18W USB-C charger would be quite handy as a backup for charging my Macbook Pro, too. Albeit not at full speed...

Japanese Mac blog Macotakara posted a new report tonight which indicates that Apple will maintain the Lightning connector on the 2019 iPhones but may finally be including a 18W Fast Charger and USB-C to Lightning cable.

The inclusion would represent an upgrade to the currently shipping 5W USB adapter. The 18W adapter allows fast charging with iPhone X charging from 1% to 79% in one hour.

This rumor actually contradicts a previous report by the same site which expected Apple to retain the 5W adapter. Macotakara also reiterates Ming-Chi Kuo's report that this year's iPhones will have ability to wirelessly charge other devices.

At the cutting edge.

Well everyone can stick with their own opinion. I stand by mine, that Apple should do the transition to USB-C as quick as possible. iPhone is the best place to start, just like the iPhone 5 introduced the Lightning port. In my opinion, the next iPhone should also make USB-C official.

I thought back in 2012, billions of Apple users also own a bunch of 30 pin cables laying around the house? Didn't stop Apple to make the switch, I see no reason to do the same now? It's not the end of the world, because Lightning would still work with older devices. And you do know Apple still sells the 30-pin until today, right? So it's not really a sudden death, just a stop gap that Apple should put a distinct line in between.

This may sound silly to you, but to me who happens to travel quite often, and own the new Macbook Air, with 11" iPad Pro and iPhone 8+ , then maybe you'll understand. Everything else is on USB-C except for this tiny little iPhone that requires one specific cable to charge.
Anyone with AirPods already needs a Lightning cable, so having iPhone switch to USB-C means they would now have to carry an extra cable, just for iPhone. And there are a lot more of them than MBP or 3rd gen iPad Pro owners—who are already carrying that Lightning cable.

Of course even the narrow use case you describe, which would allow you to carry one less cable—while simultaneously forcing a greater number of other users to start carrying one (a net loss)—is becoming increasingly less relevant as more and more people move to wireless charging.

Many who travel will get an AirPower, or another multiple device Qi charger. AirPower will no doubt use USB-PD, so you can use your iPad Pro or MBP charger/cable. Again, no compelling (or even good) reason for Apple to ditch Lightning on iPhone.

btw I’m not trying to get you to change your opinion; what you believe makes no difference to me. I’m just explaining why Apple isn’t going to do what you want.

This is really sad.Apple is again the last to adapt new technology.
Samsung and others always try to implement the very latest technology while Apple wants to milk the very last drop of cheap, old tech first.
this happened with OLED displays ,large screen phones, etc and now with fast changing,USB C,reverse charging will be next

If they’re putting USB-C on one side of the cable, I’m betting it will also go on the other side, i.e. next iPhone will have a USB-C port.

Apple probably holding back,,, dunno why... but its usually a sign they will..

I guess Tim Cook finally ran out of his stockpile of 5W chargers!
If he has any left (and he probably has several boxcars full of the damn things) he ought to consider donating them to the State of California for the construction of an artificial reef somewhere off the Bay Area coast)

For the cost of these phones they should come with a modern cable and powerful charger, anything less is marketing to make more money off customers and bad for the environment

AirPods just got Lightning, but they wouldn’t get USB C before iPhone, but ALSO I wouldn’t put it past Apple to make them different so you have to use different cables + bricks. Or buy AirPower.
Try reading the article: iPhone will remain lighting, but the cable will be usb-c to lightning, and the charger will have a usb-c port.
That sounds plausible and that is actually the content of this article.
So you will be able to connect your iPhone to an iPad Pro 2028 or Mac with usb-c or to an iPad Pro 2018 /MacBook charger without having to buy another cable/adapter.

From a personal perspective, I’m not really fussed.

The reason for that is that 90% of the time I charge my XSM wirelessly, overnight.

Occasionally, I have a need to give it a quick recharge and then I’ll use the Anker USB C PD/USB charger I bought to facilitate fast charging of my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9.

What a mess!
This way we will have to bring yet another cable along on journeys because now all airplanes have usb A charging ports. So usb a->lightning for iPhone, usb C-> lightning for iPhone, usb C->Usb C for iPad and headphones, and usb a-> Apple Watch charger. And don’t forget usb a->MICRO USB for camera charging. I just love it.

Seriously if the bring out this years phone with lightning again, I’m gonna skip another year.

It literally is ONE extra cable.
So you need to carry one power adapter and two cables.
Indeed, complaining about that sounds silly to me too.

iPhones, or rather smartphones in general, are the ONLY computer hundreds of millions (billions?) of people in the world have.

When you can facebook/tweet/insta, email, text, watch Netflix, do your banking, pay your bills, FaceTime/Skype/WhatsApp your friends and relatives, read books, search the google machine, shop on Amazon or any other website and do hundreds/thousands of other things with it, guess what: it’s a computer. It doesn’t need USB-C—the iPhone will never use that fragile of a connector—and it doesn’t need a mouse either. Get with the times gramps lol.

iPhone, iPad or Mac, buy the best tool you can afford that does what you need it to do. Don’t be afraid of new technology, embrace it. It’s coming whether you like it or not.
It was a mostly joke, but I really do sometimes feel like Apple thinks they can treat iPhones more like their own independent thing from standard computers or workstations, which is why they always seem to try and get away with things like sticking to Lightning. It's like an "accessory", even though it has pretty good specs, to an actual computer.

The fact that people do want to use iPad Pros like a computer, because of their specs, makes me think Apple had to relent and add a USB port. I doubt they would have transitioned "out of the kindness of their hearts" if they thought they could get away with Lightning for as long as possible.

I would like it if Apple gets off their high horse and ditches Lightning ASAP, but I'm just not hopeful.

What makes you think a USB-C iPhone would supply more power than a Lightning one?
are you kidding right? usb-C can deliver up to 100W.....lightning?
you think a lightning can charge an 15" mbp?
So if an iphone is made to be charged with 100W than it can but with usbC

You must be the one kidding. Are you claiming the USB-C iPad Pro can supply 100W to accessories?

There's no reason to believe a USB-C iPhone would supply any more power externally than a Lightning iPhone.

It’s not a matter of “what they can get away with”; Apple wants to bring additional features to the Pro iPads so they switched to USB-C. But there’s no real reason to use USB-C on the iPhone.
