Switching iphones to USB-C would be tragic in a world full of USB-A charging ports, cables and accessories. I don’t want to have to replace a dozen Lightning cables and accessories when I don’t even own one USB-C device. The vast majority of Apple customers own Lightning and USB-A products. USB-C only applies to a small minority of Apple customers worldwide. When I finally upgrade my iPhone it will be to Qi charging which is available at far more locations than USB-C

They will move to USB-C just like the moved from the 30-pin.

All Macbooks and Macbook Pros starting 2016 have USB-C included.

Gosh. That must have happened quietly - I’d have expected it to have created at least some discussion on these forums. Guess everyone was unambiguously happy with that change)

It's stuff like that which has put me off apple products they are just conning the customers with awful pricing and not giving you value for money for what it provides.

If they are going to change over 1k least give worthwhile features and fast charging out the box.. I live in hope apple adds more to the iPhone this year but no rumours suggest it will change.

IOS 13 could make things so much better we will see

The “worlds most advanced” phone ships with the cheapest 5w usb power plug that takes up to 4 hours to charge it.

Ridiculous.

I'm afraid that's going to be a rather long, painful wait. Apple just don't make it clear what's the line between Lightning devices and USB-C devices. My point earlier about my 10.5" iPad Pro was that iPad is almost just as fast as the newest 11" iPad Pro. The difference isn't "earth shattering" but Apple drew the first blood by dropping Lightning.

But then just a few days ago there were newly refreshed lower end iPads (Air and Mini) along with refreshed AirPods that stays with Lightning, delaying USB-C transition further.

I think Apple long term vision is clear, lighting for consumer devices (iPhones, AirPods, iPad non-Pros), USB-C for personal computers and iPad Pros, because they can both benefit from high-throughput external devices (hard drives, external GPUs, external sound cards etc.). Also, I don't think Apple sees the benefits of using USB-C on iPhones and AirPods because they clearly want these devices to move to inductive charging, so away from cables at all.

Edit to add: I also think Apple keeps offering the 5W charger because of its dimensions, it's super small, ultra portable, and everyone is used to it. Also, people should focus on be happy their problem is having to carry two chargers, it's not that big of a problem.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they don’t come with any charger just like they removed the headphone adapter. They’ll say most customers already have a charger. We’re trying to be “green” and all that.

It is and what takes the cake is the back of the S10 can charge the iPhone as fast as the cable that apples cables provides which is poor

The new UK/ROI Apple USB C wall plug actually collapses in on itself and has same if not less of a footprint / easier to pack than the 5w uk plug. Far better design.

To some degree Lightning is (also) being phased out towards 'wireless', ie, Qi-charging (now also on the Airpods battery case), other wireless charging (Airpods as individual items, new Pencil), Bluetooth for audio (instead of Lightning Earpods), iOS devices generally relying less and less on a wired connection to a computer.

Lightning ports and connectors are mechanically robuster than USB-C.

And - unlike with what and whom they're targeting with the iPad Pro - there is no good application for the higher bandwidths that USB-C provides. You're not going to use an iPhone as any kind of desktop / notebook replacement. At least Apple wouldn't want you to, as long as they can sell you desktop/notebook computers and tablets.

Mechanically robuster connector = less warranty issues.
Plus, using a proprietary connector, Apple does have control over the ecosystem and will get a share of any sale of licensed "Made for iPhone" accessories.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if Apple is never going to switch to USB-C on their phones, but instead gettting rid of the mechanical port altogether.

Maybe so as Samsung new wireless duo pad can charge the S10 as fast as the cable they provide in the box

Wow - that's really putting the planet first. If they do that I'll be sure to throw my current smartphone away every 18 months so I can buy a new greener one.

...but seriously folks, that's actually a more sensible idea, and it would, of course, be accompanied by a price cut /s (aw, drat! I must have got out of the snarky side of bed this morning).

Or (desperately trying to be serious) how about leaving out all the accessories and including a voucher for the charger and cable of your choice (which will inevitably depend on what other USB-A/C/Lightning gear you already use, so you're never going to please all of the people all of the time)?

The 5W adaptors are a joke. Yes, I sprung and paid $20 for a USB C to lightning cable and use a USB C charger from another device when my phone is uber low. I usually have a backup battery and keep my phone charged, so the wireless charging suits me fine for keeping things topped off. Yes, I have full charge “issues”.

Apple is supposed to be a premium product. Throwing that 5W adaptor in a box with an item that’s supposed to be “flagship” is just plain cheap....

I have a box of 5w chargers and a few 12w chargers. Apple shouldn't provide any charger at all, reduce the price and let the customer buy their own charger, or not.

Except we're not talking about $200 phones for talking and texting here. The $1000++ iPhone XS models are being advertised on the strength of their photo quality and 4k video capability, have way more power than is needed for a basic comms device and come with up to 512GB of storage. If you're doing 4k video then bandwidth is your friend.

That's not to mention the standardisation advantages if the one true connector lives up to its promise and starts cropping up on "public" chargers, TVs etc.

Or maybe the higher-end iPhones are just there for "conspicuous consumption" and the high-end photo and video capabilities are just solutions looking for problems? I wouldn't be hard to convince.

1. Cost - If they do come with 18W, expect the charger to be quite a bit larger and not using Gallium nitride (GaN), which is. a lot more expensive.

2. USB-C - I don't know we have to repeat this every time. Would you want iPhone to have USB-C if the cable requires MFi? i.e Only specific USB-C Cable can be used to charge iPhone. Otherwise we are going to stick to lightning.

iPad Pro - USB-C Controller is 5x larger than iPhone Lightning Controller, to provide much faster transfer rate and higher power. it is also more expensive. It is also required for iPad Pro usage pattern, such as connection to external display.

Is there anything preventing the next iPhones from adopting USB-C? If they think headphone ports should be obsolete, they should consider making the lightning port obsolete as well. It just doesn't make sense to have more than one type of port on any device, ever. Also, when it comes to headphones, if they think people should adopt wireless headphones, they should make a pair that prioritizes sound quality above all, none of this Beats crap.

Because USB-C is just a bag of hurt.

Does every USB-C cable works with 100W or whatever you thought high power it was? Nope.
Does every USB-C cable works with 20Gbps or even 10Gbps? Nope.
Does every USB-C cable allows both side to function, plugging in works on both side? Well actually you will be surprised, Nope.
Does every USB-C cable support USB 3.0 transfer speed, even lowest 5Gbps, aka USB 3.1 Gen 1 and now USB 3.2 Gen 1? Nope

OK FINE!. So every USB-C Cable will support USB 2.0 or even USB 1.1 Transfer Speed then? Well.... No. You could have dumb USB-C cable that ONLY charges and does no DATA.

What about iPad Pro ! It has USB-C Port and does 10Gbps ( USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Previously USB 3.1 Gen 2 )!
Well iPad Pro USB-C port can also output as Display Port ( Not Thunderbolt 3 ), it also has a controller size larger than your thumbnail, i.e much larger than what is currently being used on iPhone. The controller also means it has additional circuit to make sure what ever ****** cable that don't adhere to proper USB-C spec wont fried up your Tablet. ( https://bensonapprovedcom.wordpress.com )

Most of these confusion and problem will likely be fixed in USB4.

That is why I asked, would you still want USB-C if the cable had to be MFi by Apple. And if you need a "specific" cable to charge your iPhone, what difference does it make whether this specific cable is USB-C or Lightning.

This will never happen (large fast charger included in the box) simply because Apple doesn't give away anything when it has an opportunity to offer it as an upgrade for a price. Also the iPhone box would get substantially larger and heavier- and when multiplied by hundreds of millions, that's a big problem.

When did cars start going usb-c? I’m guessing a lot of people who plug their phone in their car have usb-a ports. One reason I think Apple might stay usb-a for a while.

They are pretty much making you do that anyway with the 5w charger. Pointless even using that. Wireless charging can charge it faster

I expect we’ll see this just for the high end ‘XS’ phones.

I think we’ll never see USB-C on the iPhone.

More likely is:

2019 - haptic volume, mute and power buttons & USB-C to lightning fast charging.

2020-21: the iPhone becomes a fully sealed unit with no ports (with slower inductive charging but only when wireless charging mats become ubiquitous).
