I assume they will rather make the courageous choice of removing the cable and the charger from the box completely. Now they give you - tadaa - the freedom to choose between different chargers and even going wireless without being burdened by the ones coming with your phone! Of course the redesign of the box requires at least a $100 price hike over the entire range but that's a small price to pay for such freedom.

Care to elaborate? There’s a whole ecosystem build on Lightning. The port opening on the phone side is smaller.

Except for things like power delivery in USB-C, most things can be done by Lightning as well, some other would probably be possible with some Firmware update.

Yes, USB-C is bound to rule the (future) market, but that does not automatically equal Lightning being already antiquated.

We know USB Power Delivery can be done via Lightning, because iPhones support it since 2017 and so do all iPad Pro models with Lightning except the 9.7-inch.

We can also determine Lightning to support at least 36 Watt via USB PD, since we know it can handle both 2.4 Ampere (what iPads have charged with for years) and the 15 Volt profile of USB PD (the highest input voltage iPhones and iPad Pro accept as of yet). And 2.4 A at 15 V makes for 36 W of power.

It's gonna take more than that to goose sales in China where Huawei is eating Apple's breakfast, lunch, and dinner (84% market share drops to 56% in 1 year).
And im very happy about that. Imagine Apple being successful in every market. The iPhone price would skyrocket.

Apple owns Lightning, and can sell more adapters.

The only reason the iPad Pro got a usb port is because selling an iPad with Lightning and attempting to call it a computer would be false advertising. iPhones are not computers, so it's just silly by Apple logic to bring it down to a regular standard that would make everyone else's lives easier
I totally agree with you but a lot of people don't understand this. To be honest I prefer the lightning cable over USB-C. I hope they won't switch to USB-C for the iPhone. I would rather prefer them to remove the charging port altogether in the favor of wireless charging.

kind of agree. I don't remember the last time I plugged anything in to any phone. I wish they would include a fast wireless charger instead.

Even though my iPhone supports wireless charging I don't own a wireless charger because I am waiting for the AirPower. Charging multiple devices at the same time without worryng that you haven't placed your devices on the right spot on the charger is really a big deal to me. So far no one on the market has achieved this.

Headphone jack in the 18w charger so you can listen to the electricity?
Pretty much the reason why people want USB-C. Now seriously I don't want USB-C. Just remove the charging port. They should have done it when they removed the jack port.

I’m not buying another iPhone until it is usb-c both of my MacBook pros have a usb c charger , my iPad has a usb c charger. I can take one cable to charge them all but always need to bring a lightning cable and it’s annoying.
What if you need to charge them at the same time? You will still need 3 USB-C cables.

Don't give Apple the idea to remove the charging port because Qi is the future.
It's exactly what I want them to do. Please Tim, Jony, read this post!

Wow,
Apple is going to force me to skip another update, for the second year in a row.
Losing faith in you apple.
Getting a little ridiculous with these garbage incremental updates.

I’m my opinion the updates aren’t garbage, incremental sure, like every other phone update on the planet. But as always, YMMV. But I think the 2019 update will be worth it, to me at least.

Why would I upgrade to a device that has a connector on it that was obsolete almost 5 years ago?

You don't have to. I might. I personally don't see the value of USB-C (for me today)
I have the iPhone X. I used to upgrade every year (started with the 4S). I bought 2 phones always top of the line offerings, one for my business partner, one for me.
In Canada, that is $2000 per phone for the XS Max, up from $1480 for the iPhone X. If it was $1400, I'd be on board but when its the cost of a macbook, its senseless.

"May"? That's ridiculous. This should be standard by now. But Tim needs those high margins!

The fact that the iPhone has had fast charging since 2017 and we are speculating if the 2019 iPhone will have a fast charger in the box goes to show how grubby Apple got.

Indeed, makes it worse the comp have made wireless chargers which actually charge as fast as the fast charge in the box while apple can’t even provide a fast charging cable. Very frustrating.

Lightning has not become an industry standard, so Apple should move to USB-C.
[doublepost=1553458237][/doublepost]
Switching iphones to USB-C would be tragic in a world full of USB-A charging ports, cables and accessories. I don’t want to have to replace a dozen Lightning cables and accessories when I don’t even own one USB-C device. The vast majority of Apple customers own Lightning and USB-A products. USB-C only applies to a small minority of Apple customers worldwide. When I finally upgrade my iPhone it will be to Qi charging which is available at far more locations than USB-C

USB-C to USB-A instead of lightning to USB-A and all our worries should be gone.

In a few years, you would need a mortgage.....

The European Union should force Tim Apple to switch to USB-C .

The European Union talks a lot but does little. I think they (EU) came up with universal chargers like 5 years ago.

Think of the mark up they can add to the iPhone by shipping this! 3.6 x the charging power...that's easily an extra $100 they can tack onto the bill. Go Timmy!

Maybe some are frustrated, some aren't. I'm not. I would be surprised if Apple included a higher wattage charger, but you never know.

What kept you from just getting the equivalent XS model to succeed your X? What if there hadn't been a 512 GB XS Max?
