"wooo-woooo-woooooo obnoxious crowd screaming when lights dim and some cheesy U2 song is playing in background"

:)

My no. 1 gripe with my iPhone is that if I pull down Control Center, hit play and no app was running in the background (I use Spotify not Apple Music) it will start playing that goddamn U2 album from a few years ago.

I bought like 5 songs on the iTunes Store back in the day so they're sort of the only music I have actually on my phone and not in the cloud, 5 iPhones later and Bono's still there, waiting to come up at the least convenient time.

I liked U2 up until their Vertigo album but now I hate them intensely.

This among with the camera is attractive. If they give me usb c (I realize that this year chances are basically null), I'll have a hard time continuing to whine about price lol.

Still waiting for a "bezel-less" 14" MacBook Air that supports 32 GB RAM (16 GB is OK now, but will it be in 5+ years?). I have a 2011 MacBook Air that is still going strong. Only real issues are that Apple dropped support so I can't install 10.14+, and it only has 4 GB RAM, which fills up pretty fast with a modern OS.

But that 2011 Air has among the longest useful lifetimes of any computer hardware I've ever bought.
Have you changed the battery? The battery on my dad’s 2013 crapped out and it was a real pain to replace, as the Apple store does not stock the battery.

Yes, I replaced the battery (through Apple) after about 4-5 years. It still worked but only yielded less than 3 hours at that point (still not bad considering I did a >50% charge almost every day). I would imagine they’re getting harder to find in stock now though.

Haha, yeah I hear ya. I had the same thing happening to me, I had virtually nothing in my iTunes collection but good ol' Bonno kept popping up thanks to Apple's generosity. I eventually had to look up how to scrub that er, stuff, off of my Apple devices as it wasn't immediately apparent at the time on how to do so.

HAHA! This is so true. That free album was our nightmare and there will be there for a long time I guess.

I believe there was some sort of online 'tool' Apple made specifically to scrub the free U2 album off of your iDevices if you were so 'ungracious' as to have the audacity to want to wipe such a precious 'gift' off of your iDevice. I think that's what I had to use at the time to finally rid myself of that hot garbage, but I'm honestly not sure what you'd need to do now to sterilize Bono off of your device. :)

And maybe no case, although the protruding camera on the back would make it too wobbly.
iPhone 5 was the last phone I run naked, the camera wasn't protruding and it was less slippery than iPhone 6 as it had squared edges...
Let it wobble.

...has anyone every used an iPhone without a case?
I think quite a few people do. I don't upgrade yearly, and still have my 6S. Thanks to Apple (yes, really, iOS12/13 and the $29 battery replacement) it's running well. I have a leather case for it but once the phone is a year or so old I tend to use it without the case. Makes it seem like a new phone :) It's survived a few minor drops and the camera bump is an aesthetic mess but not a usability one imo.

You can have escalating prices and you can have incremental updates but when you get both..

Strategy Analytics: US Smartphone Replacement Lengthens to 33 Months Despite Strong Interest In 5G

David Kerr, Senior Vice President at Strategy Analytics noted “Operators and device brands face significant inertia given consumer perception of diminishing innovation or marginal value add in successive generations of flagship devices. At the same time vendor pursuit of profitability has seen smartphone prices rising towards and above $1,000. Prices for 5G phones will be a key barrier despite 1 in 4 recognizing it as being important for their next device.”

I will sit this one out - I am satisfied with my current gear but will watch the keynote with interest

...new multi-angle Face ID sensor that captures a wider field of view will enable users to unlock the next iPhones more easily, even when the devices are laying flat on a table for example.
Yes please.

In the same boat. I usually upgrade my iPhone every year, and I'm one of those that wait up to 3am to do so on day 1. This is the first year I actually am thinking long and hard about waiting a bit. I say this often, but this year I feel more strongly about it than ever before. My XR is a great great phone, and 2020 sounds more worth it to me.

I was like that every year until 2018, when I kept my X for 18 months and upgraded to the XS Max in March this year. Even though I’m going to watch the keynote, I’m not upgrading until Qualcomm is back in the iPhones.

iOS 13 brings some pretty substantial improvements to Face ID. I just started beta testing it last week and the difference is a serious breath of fresh air for a system that already was at the top of its class. Apple wasn't kidding when they claimed a 30% improvement with iOS 13

So I would say wait for the software update (unless you're brave enough to download the beta, but the releases are fairly stable now, as you would hope being less than a month out from release haha) and see if that doesn't scratch your itch before buying the new phone

That’s what I decided to do this year. Wait for the public release. I always jump on the beta train but decided to wait it out this year. I hope it breathes a breath of fresh air into the XS Max, and prevent me from upgrading.

I'm looking forward to rumors same time next year when we hopefully read about Apple ditching Face ID altogether and implement Under Display Touch ID + elimination of notch.
it will be SO MUCH better.

I highly doubt Apple will get rid of Face ID next year. I can see them reducing the notch or even getting rid of it next year.

I've told myself I'm not upgrading this year but FaceID not working when the phone is lying flat is my biggest annoyance with the XS.

And all my original post that you quoted was saying is that I disagree with that statement. I do not think the new design will prompt the people holding onto their devices longer to drop $900-$1,000 on the new models. I think they will be seeking other alternatives and I think there will be a lot of them doing it. The 6 line remains the best-selling of all the iPhone history and I think the gamble of playing it safe here on the assumption that they have these users for life is a mistake on Apple’s part.

And you don’t think that the 6 being the last phone that you could buy on subsidy didn’t have anything to do with why phone sales started declining? I know that’s why I still have my 6 (when I used to upgrade every year). I’m only buying a new phone now cause my 6 is dying and combined with Apple discontinuing support and it starting to get annoying slow I’ve decided it’s time to bite the bullet and buy a new iPhone. Btw, I’m exactly the lost sales people talk about.

Even though it would last me longer than that, I want an unlocked iPhone with the Qualcomm modem. This Intel modem is a nightmare with the dropped calls and spotty service. My 7+ works flawless on T-Mobile, so I know it’s not the service. Plus I want to test out Verizon’s network next year to see if I want to switch from T-Mobile. I would need a new phone to use Verizon’s network.

I still have hopes that Apple will price the new (base model) 16" MBP (if that's what they call it) in the realm where it's attainable by us mere mortals.

Why does everybody complain about the price, when neither the price nor specs are even known...and they never say what price they are willing to pay?????

Please tell us how much you are willing to pay, and tell us how Apple will "adjust" the product to make your price point.

Alternatively, explain why every time a windows machine approaches the materials, design and specs of a Macbook, the price matches or exceeds the price of the macbook?

....And if, in the attempt to honestly answer these questions, you realize that the macbook is optimized for a different use case than your own, please make a note of that as well.

Fair point. I'm using an iPhone 8 right now with no issues. Intend to hang onto it until Apple comes out with a smaller version of the iPhone XR. There are rumors of a 5.4" iPhone with FaceID coming out next year so "knock on wood" that pans out.

I don't know about him, but I need 128GB at least cause I already have more than 64GBs on my phone. Do the base models actually come as low as 32 GBs these days?

(I'd be fine with just 128 but magically the jump is from 64 to 256... I agree with the guy you responded to they should make the base model 128 but Apple doesn't do that to be able to give a "cheap" price and make you upgrade when you realize the base model is too small).

And I mean I have 128 on my current phone that is 5 years old! Is it too much to ask the base model offer at least as much memory as you could get on a 5 year old phone?
They won't make 128 the base until a little over 256 is average and then 512 will be the second level.

That does address one of my dislikes of FaceID. When working at a desk with phone laid flat you a need go-go gadget neck to unlock it. No fix the sunglasses hat combo issue.

I for one HATE FaceID. It's already WAY too sensitive. I can't tell you how many time I check the time or something then next thing I know my phone is calling someone in my pocket. Ot the flashlight is turned on. Or an email deleted.

The damned thing unlocks and bouncing around in mph pocket starts pressing things. So annoying.

ApplePay and app purchases are a pain in the ass with FaceID too now. Why do I have to stare at my phone, then double-click a button, then put it back at the scanner to pay for something?

I really miss using my finger on the home button! It worked so much better.
Paying and getting new apps are definitely the two things I also hate about FaceID.

With Trump's executive order today mandating all American companies to seek manufacturing outside of China I wonder how this will effect the next gen iPhone? I believe Apple has stated they have enough non-China manufacturing to source all iPhones sold in the US. This may put them to the test to see if that is really true. I wonder how the timeline for the release might be influenced by this new wrinkle.
