2019 iPhones Said to Have Improved Shatter Resistance, Multi-Angle Face ID That Works Flat on Tables

Yeah no. I have bought every iPhone since the 3G, every year. I have the XS Max now. I won't be "upgrading" this year. Spec bump and camera bump don't warrant another $1,200 dollars. Even selling the old phone, there will be tons of people doing the same thing. No. I am not dumping anymore money into Apple for the same damn design for the last 4 years while they call it "the best iPhone YET!"

When I realistically look at what I do with my device, it's more than capable. I am pretty sure yours is too. I have yet to meet anyone that has been held back by their mobile device ... they couldn't post to facebook or instagram because their iPhone was too old. Lol.

Maybe it's because I'm getting older or because I am tired of pissing my money away but I'm done with the yearly game of "must have latest and greatest" - without any real game changing features. We've reached a peak. Until that changes, it's not worth it to me.

Agree 100%. Also waiting for the switch back to Qualcomm modems.

Nothing in the 2019 iPhone is enough to get me to replace my 8 Plus. I'll wait till they release an iPhone that supports 5G.

Having used the iPhone since 3G, I stopped my upgrades on the 7 Plus
Currently carrying a 6S+ and a 7+ for business and personal use
As I thought this year's iPhone upgrade should be a bigger jump considering the X to XS is just a minor change, but from what I see it seems to be a bit underwhelming.

Recently I picked up an android device(P30 Pro) to try out some of the latest specs and the android system (last one I've used was from the Galaxy note 2). Man oh man what a difference it is... The camera, under screen fingerprint sensor, face unlock, 45W quick charge (0 - 100% in 45mins), 15 hour screen on time, the list goes on... And for using iMessage, Android has a web version of the messages app now which is equally efficient as iMessage.

Seriously I think the market now is just so diverse, with so many choices and price range, Apple really needs to step up their game rather than doing these minor upgrades yearly just to stay in the market. I agree apple is the industry leader in the smartwatches and tablets. But for smartphones, I think what will really shock apple to step it up is having many users jump ship to the other side to make them realize (obviously most likely won't happen).

If set to "Looks like 1920 x 1200", the GPU is driving the same number of software pixels regardless of whether the panel's physical resolution matches. The only difference is the extra scaling step which softens the picture, this is required if Apple doesn't include a panel with a 3840x2400 physical resolution. You really don't know what you're talking about.
It seems you are not a developer or an macOS Catalina rendering//graphic app user. Again if you know anything about scaling in macOS catalina (NOT mojave or H Sierra)...you should know 4k is useless(4k is 3840 x 2160 pixels and not really 3840x2400), and you dont know what battery life has an windows oem 4k display laptop . But again, when everybody says that you are wrong and you are the one that dont know what is talking about...whats the point to argue with you anymore?!YOu are living in the past 2012-2016 retina macbooks scaling It seems you have the gift of contradiction. You will see even Apple will not follow your useless logic.

But nothing but iPhones run iOS so most will stick with iPhones...

if apple brings out cameras on level as p30 pro then features wise they aren’t missing much...and it’s runs iOS which runs better

fast charging is great but I charge wirelessly at night and rarely use a main cable so it’s not really a must have thing. On Hoilday it’s useful but if apple are releasing a 18w charger with the iPhone 11 that will be perfectly fine for quick charge needs

I would consider upgrading but my XS Max is working perfectly and I’m getting 3% cash back on my iPhone Upgrade Program payments(using Apple Card). Just an observer this time around. May just get the Smart Battery case instead and get ready for next years model

I agree with the camera and especially with the iOS system, they do a good job at keeping it lag free and having longer duration of system updates!

but fast charging is really a game changer, because as your phone ages the battery depletes, so it won't last as long. For my iPhone 7, I can't go through a full days use so I must charge it at work. With 30mins charging, it can only get from 10% to around 40%, where as 30 mins of fast charge can get u to 70% which is around extra 1.5 - 2 hours of use!

4K in the 16:10 ratio is 3840x2400, no one is asking for 16:9, myself included. No major changes to scaling happened in MacOS Catalina, it functions exactly the same as Mojave and earlier versions of MacOS. Again, you really don't have a clue what you're talking about.

I'm looking forward to rumors same time next year when we hopefully read about Apple ditching Face ID altogether and implement Under Display Touch ID + elimination of notch.
it will be SO MUCH better.

This will be a huge success for sure. Gonna get the largest phone for myself and the new XR for my partner.

I have an 7+ and I think it's about the time for an upgrade. For sure 2020 ones are gonna be huge hit but. I will use this 2019 Pro one and enjoy as far as possible. We'll see.

I totally get that of you’re on iPhone 7. My max lasts me all day but everybody uses their devices differently after all.

"The report claims a new multi-angle Face ID sensor that captures a wider field of view will enable users to unlock the next iPhones more easily, even when the devices are laying flat on a table for example."

I for one HATE FaceID. It's already WAY too sensitive. I can't tell you how many time I check the time or something then next thing I know my phone is calling someone in my pocket. Ot the flashlight is turned on. Or an email deleted.

The damned thing unlocks and bouncing around in mph pocket starts pressing things. So annoying.

ApplePay and app purchases are a pain in the ass with FaceID too now. Why do I have to stare at my phone, then double-click a button, then put it back at the scanner to pay for something?

I really miss using my finger on the home button! It worked so much better.

I bet you don’t even use up 32 GB

But let’s go ahead and give Apple an ultimatum and demand that they impress me as I type away furiously on my 2008 iMac in my parent’s basement

LMAO!

A shatter resistant iPhone would equate to no tempered screen protector or case for me.

Keep in mind that there's a big difference between shatter-resistant and shatter-proof. You might want to hold onto at least your case.

Same here.
I look at my bank account and I say: "Marco, you don't need to spend 1500€ for a new iPhone, you've already a perfect iPhone X, you can live with that".
And then September comes and I say to myself "It's my life so shut up and take my money".

Strange things happen in my mind ...

You too eh? LOL!

Every year we hear about "increased shatter resistance", by all vendors but ... glass is still glass.

Uhhh, no it's not. Take an aircraft's cockpit windshield for example. That's made of glass. Do you realize what it takes to shatter an aircraft's windshield?

The current issue with that is being fixed next year with a very nice 180 degree field of view receiver lens with specific distortion calibration software to decode the IR map printed off the face. Likewise the dot projector will be more complex with more of a pyramid distribution to achieve the necessary range.

And after reading this, my brain burst into flames. I think I'll retire to my library now and read some lofty topic like "See Spot Run"

Is it glass? Thought it was polycarbonate or combination polycarbonate/polyurethane/acrylic?

Do you realize how thick is an aircraft's windshield ?

.78"-1.2" on average. Yes, much thicker than a cell phone screen but, hey, I'm just sayin'.

Average aircraft windshield/windscreen is made up of 6 layers of alternating glass and polymer.

The sexiest thing Apple could offer me in the 2019 iPhone is a Qualcomm modem! I'm so tired of the current Intel modem in my Xs underperforming my iPhone 6 and if they stick a Qualcomm modem back in the Verizon phone, I'm getting one.

omg... the multi-angle faceID is WELCOMED. So annoying to have to pick up phone when I just want to tap while its on the table. It even fails me when I'm driving. :(

Hopefully they improve scratch resistance. My iphone X is by far the easiest screen to scratch of any iphone I've owned.

You know what’s funny.....

I haven’t read any comments in this thread (from what I’ve seen) bashing the “ugly patch on the back”.

I wonder if y’all finally realized that it isn’t actually that bad Lol.

You're either a troll or you really, really underestimate Apple's power...

The power to sell less iPhones? Their iPhone sales are down 12-17% year over year. Third consecutive quarterly decline.

The reasoning I keep hearing for this is “it’s because the phones have better chips, last longer, and people are waiting to upgrade.” I’ve always maintained that that isn’t the reason at all. The iPhone 6 and 6S’s are about to start showing their age, more will be known in the next year to year and a half. I don’t believe this design will sell.
[doublepost=1566503478][/doublepost]
People aren’t really leaving for Android they are just keeping their iPhone for longer

Yeah, that’s what everyone keeps saying. Yet iOS marketshare fell 2.2% in the United States and over 5% in some parts of Europe. China was in double digit -20%+ losses and even in the last earnings statement, they only managed to get it to -4%. I don’t believe this design is going to prompt upgrades. Might even cause some to leave as their devices are now old and they will jump to alternatives. We will see...
[doublepost=1566503565][/doublepost]
Lies. There is no “hemorrhaging” of users. iPhone user base has actually increased. A gazillion people buying $50 Android phones and changing the size of the pie doesn’t change this fact.

Sales are down on iPhones 12% year over year. It’s the only time in the device’s history where they have had multiple decreases in sales for consecutive quarters over quarters.

I'm a 6s+ user and still in no mood to upgrade. My wife has a pixel 3a and honestly that kind of camera at that price really tempts me to go android next year. That the Xs/XsMax still can't match that camera is a huge bummer. I will not be surprised if the new iPhone cameras still fall short. I love the ecosystem that iOS offers, love the integration between all devices. I am heavily invested in it. I really want the iPhone to up its game in the camera department. It used to be class leading. Wonder why it stopped being so.

Because priorities changed from innovation and being best in class (like camera) to supply chain and cost-saving under Tim Cook’s leadership. He’s wrong for the company, in my opinion. I am very anti Tim Cook and this is not a secret.
