Anyone have an informed opinion regarding the 10th gen i-Core vs. older ones?

For example:
How would the new 3.8 GHz 8 Core compare to the 2017 - 4 Core 4.2 GHz, core for core?
I.e. will there only be a benefit once an application using > 4 cores before seeing any speed increase...?

This is a great machine. I've mentioned in many posts before that I am in the market for a new iMac, but I still think I'll wait for the ARM iMac, and compare. .

Wondering how long these things will be usable, considering the switch to ARM. Maybe 5 years max?

5 years is probably what it'll take for ARM Macs to gain any sort of traction on x64. Fine for casual users but for power users x64 isn't going anywhere at least for most of this decade.

Okay- serious question here, only because I watched the vids but was not able to play audio. Are the nano-texture screens simply matte coatings? Or is it actually a glass surface that's been etched? If it's the former, I'm not that impressed. If it's the latter, then I'm very impressed with its diffusive, light scattering properties.

Yes, they are etched at the nanometer level.

finally tempted to upgrade from my 2011 27in. iMac. Essentially double the geekbench single core score for the i7 2600 I've got. And almost four times the multicore score. I think my keyshot renders will go a bit quicker :)

"the nano-texture glass gives the ‌iMac‌ "an updated look" and said it's fingerprint resistant."

Can you guess whats coming with the next arm based macbooks?

finger print resistant on a non touch screen. How marvelous for all those annoying people that show and point to you what’s on screen by actually touching the screen. Ugh.

Doesn’t matt mean less contrast ratio? Also it’s not fair these you tubers all get given free machines especially when they have money

It guarantees favourable reviews that reach people who just want to be told that, as they thought, all Apple products are awseome without a single issue.

If you’re an iMac user and need bootcamp, this is the time to buy..
...or to think about whether it is is wise to invest in a dead end and to use your current Intel-machine a little longer, while searching for a solution to untie that symbiotic machine into the announced separated worlds.

Something is well designed and look great than why change ? Does BMW for the last few decades changed it's front grill(two kidney looking) design ? NO. Because it is timeless. Same for iMac.

Because it doesn't look great at all by today's standards. It started looking terribly outdated several years ago. I certainly didn't expect Apple to refresh the design for this particular update (it should have happened a few years ago but obviously won't happen until the ARM switch) but thick bezels and a huge chin is not a timeless design.

[from the Verge’s review]: “One thing that doesn't feel modern at all with the 2020 iMac is logging in. Unless you have an Apple Watch and use it to unlock your computer, the only way to get in is to type out your password like an animal.”

Like an animal?? Animals can type passwords? 🤪🙈

I think in this context, "an animal" is a person who doesnt have 3 or more i-devices that can be strung together to verify that you are.... Well, to prove that you are yourself.

Having an apple device for the express purpose of convincing a different apple device that it is ok to turn on, that just sounds silly! Unless of course the apple watch is taking your pulse, temp, and occasional retina scans to verify that you are its real owner... But what if it decides you are not its owner???

I think the nano texture looks great, but I also think my Dell UltraSharps with a regular matte screen also looks great and it's not $500 extra.

I would like to see how this handles compared to one of those, I'm not convinced this is actually better and instead is just a way to make a glass screen with similar anti-glare properties to a plastic screen.

Since I cant upgrade till november due to needing to use Mojave anyway, I hope we get a taste of what ARM is going to be like in the laptops so I can see if its going to be some insane boost over the current intel chips. Im curious what apple is going to do for graphics with these machines going forward with their own silicon. Will they still use AMD?

Looks like my other comment was held for moderation, probably due to having a link. But you can see the GeekBench results by searching their site for "iMac20,2"

Just for curiosity's sake, I wonder if we'll ever find out whether the improvements to the camera, microphones, and speakers were always planned for this year's refresh or if they were added post-Covid-19 in response to videoconferencing trends?

Of course. How do you think this happened?
