everything new and shiny are kept for the next arm based imacs...is obvious and the right aproach...Apple wants to be a big redesign from form factor to their accessories . This is marketing from an almost 2 bil company
They have more intel Mac products coming, support for years, and its close to 2 Trillion, but beware this unusual marketplace. (stock price) ;)

PS those are great reviews for this release of 2020 27" iMac!

man the hype train is going full steam. The new iMac is way overkill for almost all those who now have to do office work at home.
How many new Work At Home employees would have received a new 2020 company issued iMac if they were still working in the office?

I look down at reviewers who say something is too good. Referring to the webcam: "I mean, it's a little too clear at times." - Mashable Oh come on now, the old one sucks, the new one is too good. Boo hoo, go get a square centimeter of magic scotch tape and get over it.
Same goes for the CPU/GPU. Too powerful? Don't get the high end option...

Plot twist; like the Pro Display XDR, the new ARM Mac will have a magnetic mount that will allow you to switch it from a default stand (like the current) to the height-adjustable Pro Stand.

I have the 2017 iMac, and I would’ve killed for that 5700 XT when I got it in 2018. With the RX 580 in my iMac, I can comfortably do 1080p 60fps Ultra for almost all games, but 1080p looks garbage at 27 inches. I know for a fact that the 5700 XT could muster 1440p easily.

also, They should put a ProMotion display in one of these things in the future, now THAT would be impressive and innovative.

Nowadays, a computer lasts probably 5 years on average. It'd be hard to decide whether to get this one or wait for the armmacs.

I’m quite sure whatever the redesign looks like, it will make this one look exactly as old as it is.

It might be 12-18 months before the AS iMac and then another 12-24 months before we have the software we need (if it comes at all?).

The newly released iMac seems to be the perfect machine to carry one over the Rev1/Beta software period I really don’t have the patience for :)

2025-ish will probably be a good time to buy an AS iMac.

I'm one of those who don't get the bezel problem. On a phone it makes sense since you have to hold it. But a 2-in. wider screen on my desk isn't a big deal. I have a narrower LG monitor attached and never think about the difference.

But FaceID or TouchID should a feature.

$500 to etch the screen!

That would almost certainly be a terrible idea, given how delicate it is and how prone to contact laptop displays are.

Given that people still use PowerPC Macs... 15+ years?

That's what I'd go with. For sure a minimum of 10.

I for one love the look of these iMacs. I don't get this unending problem with bezels. I never notice them, they don't bother me. Besides, without the bottom "chin" or whatever it's called on these iMacs, where would you put your post-it reminders??

At least my late 2015 27" 5K looks the same as the current models, for just a while longer.
This design is a classic. It looks no less stunning just because it has been around for a while. And one benefit of the ”chin” is that it effectively raises the height of the actual display and the webcam to where you want them to be. I think the 27-inch iMac is to computers what the Boeing 747 is to aircraft -- yes, an old design, but nonetheless one that remains impressive every time you see it. It is still unmatched in terms of style among desktop computers.

Here's the breathless hyperbole from the Gizmodo article that was quoted in the OP:

"On Geekbench 4, a synthetic test of overall system performance, the iMac’s single-core score of 6382 and multi-core score of 42417 impressed us all. Joanna Nelius, Gizmodo’s resident PC and processor expert, exclaimed: 'What the hell did Intel do to this CPU?'" [emphasis mine]

And here's the reality:

The single-core GB4 result they found for the 10th-gen Intel CPU in the 2020 iMac (3.6 GHz 10-core Intel i9) is only 3.7% faster than than that for the equivalent 9th-gen Intel CPU in 2019 machine (3.6 GHz 8-core Core i9-9900K):
6382/6157*100 – 100 = 3.7%.

And the per-core multicore result is only 5.1% faster:
42417/10/(32293/8)*100 – 100 = 5.1%

I find it odd where the balance lies between these machines, as the iMac is not good enough for my use [been there twice before never again] but is too much for the average person. Basically I think they are designed for people in the 2D graphic and video industries.

Here is the most odd thing though. A 24” 4K iMac is probably the absolute sweet spot in terms of work from home computing. The 27” is huge and I have nowhere to put one for example together with that I personally love working on 24” 4K over 27” 5k [size and resolution is perfect for single app full screen productivity in CAD and 3D apps].

Agree. And it is somewhere to park your post it notes.

Although I need an upgrade, this is too lacklustre to purchase.
- Same outdated design
- No face ID login
- No backlight on keyboard
- Nothing to get excited about

Wondering how long these things will be usable, considering the switch to ARM. Maybe 5 years max?

Not aware of any kill switch that would disable them after any period of time.

Maybe you should read the reviews before rendering an opinion.

If you want a backlit keyboard just buy one. No need to use the Apple keyboard. No Mac currently has FaceID, I would love to have that though.

A much more interesting comparison would be the new 10 core vs the new 8 core. Who cares about the 2019 machine when you can't even buy one anymore.

Doesn’t matt mean less contrast ratio? Also it’s not fair these you tubers all get given free machines especially when they have money

I don't think "fairness" is something Apple considers in its marketing. People who can influence lots of others to buy the Mac will get a machine from Apple (not always to keep forever though). It's cost-effective marketing and advertising for them.

And yes, as rule in the capitalist world, rich people tend to get stuff for free or cheap (because they have more influence), pay fewer taxes (because they can afford clever accountants), and have fewer penalties if they break the law (because they can afford better lawyers).

What design change want in iMAC ? Something is well designed and look great than why change ? Does BMW for the last few decades changed it's front grill(two kidney looking) design ? NO. Because it is timeless. Same for iMac.
For starter, design the stand so it can go up/down not just tilt up/down. Then add the face ID, target display mode, backlit keyboard, and expand the screen to the edge.

I would take a black one. Not dark gray, but a simple vantablack iMac.
