Matte display is a day & night difference.
everything new and shiny are kept for the next arm based imacs...is obvious and the right aproach...Apple wants to be a big redesign from form factor to their accessories . This is marketing from an almost 2 bil company
Trillion. Almost two trillion (1.95T today) 😳
Wow. This might be the last real, great, classic mac before they turn them all into worthless ARM iPads
We'll see a huge number of current iOS Apps rolled out on Apple Silicon. No doubt that will increase the number of available apps with decent performance significantly (not necessarily their quality).I imagine what we will see in the first generation of Apple Silicon is whilst Apple Software will substantially be faster third party software will lag regardless how good the hardware is.
What design change want in iMAC ? Something is well designed and look great than why change ? Does BMW for the last few decades changed it's front grill(two kidney looking) design ? NO. Because it is timeless. Same for iMac.
Anyone have an informed opinion regarding the 10th gen i-Core vs. older ones?
For example:
How would the new 3.8 GHz 8 Core compare to the 2017 - 4 Core 4.2 GHz, core for core?
I.e. will there only be a benefit once an application using > 4 cores before seeing any speed increase...?
If you’re an iMac user and need bootcamp, this is the time to buy..
5 years is probably what it'll take for ARM Macs to gain any sort of traction on x64. Fine for casual users but for power users x64 isn't going anywhere at least for most of this decade.
finally tempted to upgrade from my 2011 27in. iMac. Essentially double the geekbench single core score for the i7 2600 I've got. And almost four times the multicore score. I think my keyshot renders will go a bit quicker![]()
Do these reviews really influence buying decisions?
I look down at reviewers who say something is too good. Referring to the webcam: "I mean, it's a little too clear at times." - Mashable Oh come on now, the old one sucks, the new one is too good. Boo hoo, go get a square centimeter of magic scotch tape and get over it.
Same goes for the CPU/GPU. Too powerful? Don't get the high end option...
Here's the breathless hyperbole from the Gizmodo article that was quoted in the OP:
"On Geekbench 4, a synthetic test of overall system performance, the iMac’s single-core score of 6382 and multi-core score of 42417 impressed us all. Joanna Nelius, Gizmodo’s resident PC and processor expert, exclaimed: 'What the hell did Intel do to this CPU?'"
And here's the reality:
The single-core GB4 results they found for the 2020 iMac with a 3.6 GHz 10-core 10th-gen Intel i9 are only 3.7% faster than than that for the equivalent 2019 machine (3.6 GHz 8-core Core i9-9900K):
6382/6157*100 – 100 = 3.7%.
And the per-core multicore results are only 5.1% faster:
42417/10/(32293/8)*100 – 100 = 5.1%

But for you that need the flexibility of dual-boot, X86 support, and a workhorse Mac, this machine is a banging deal and probably the best value Apple offers (warts and all).
Ha...my first hard drive was a 32 *Mega*-byte ISA board. Barely one Raw image from my camera these days.
Probably not with the T2 and entirely new guts. That’s why I got the 2019 i9 last month.I want to know if you can install and boot off Mojave instead of Catalina.
Similar boat with a 2015. I will upgrade in about two years. Apple silicon redesign , and then gen 2 to work out the kinks.[clutches pearls] Oh no! Borders! How will I ever fit this into my pocket??
I'm using a 2014 iMac 5K and even at its relatively advanced age it's a very capable machine and the screen is just gorgeous to look at. This new one looks like a real treat and I'd upgrade if I could justify it, but frankly mine is totally sufficient for the work I do with it.
The nano textured glass is pretty nice. I won't buy a new iMac without it. as for the i9, I'm curious about it versus the i7. I suspect for most tasks the i7 will do almost as well. And now you can run two additional 5k (or realistically, 4k) displays with the iMac, which has always been my dream. Time to start saving for when things get really impressive! So a nicely spaced out 27 in iMac will run me around 5k .. about the entry price on an iMac Pro and probably pretty comparable in performance. But what about thermal management? Will the i9 run full tilt without throttling? If not the Pro is the better choice.
So are shooting angles.
Great updates, but I have to say that the current iMac form factor is starting to look so dated. That alone would hold me back from buying it right now. Those bezels belong in 2010. It's time for a complete refresh, which I suspect will come with new ARM iMac sometime next year.
