Matte display is a day & night difference.

Currently on a lot of web conferencing you can't use 1080p yet, but it will provide some degree of future proofing to have that.

Wow. This might be the last real, great, classic mac before they turn them all into worthless ARM iPads

Haven‘t they made the claim that the ARM Macs are supposed to be way faster than this? The 10 core i9 sounds like a beast of a processor, but probably won’t hold a candle to this new Apple silicon whatever.

I imagine what we will see in the first generation of Apple Silicon is whilst Apple Software will substantially be faster third party software will lag regardless how good the hardware is.

I agree with other Apple have kept major redesigns of iMacs for their new processors.

Well, that this would not get a design update, seems obvious to me. After all, the new ARM machines will need a design update, so Apple keeps their powder dry.

As for the new screen option: It will become standard in about 5 years. Until then, Apple is gonna charge you. Really no suprise here.

We'll see a huge number of current iOS Apps rolled out on Apple Silicon. No doubt that will increase the number of available apps with decent performance significantly (not necessarily their quality).

What design change want in iMAC ? Something is well designed and look great than why change ? Does BMW for the last few decades changed it's front grill(two kidney looking) design ? NO. Because it is timeless. Same for iMac.

The grill has become part of the logo, or you can say that the grill itself has become the logo. But the design of the car changes every 5 years. Apple's logo is timeless, but the design has changed over time. However, in the last 4-5 years, the design of almost every apple product has remained stagnant.

Anyone have an informed opinion regarding the 10th gen i-Core vs. older ones?

For example:
How would the new 3.8 GHz 8 Core compare to the 2017 - 4 Core 4.2 GHz, core for core?
I.e. will there only be a benefit once an application using > 4 cores before seeing any speed increase...?

Well. The Blender example mentioned in the review highlights.

3d rendering will be a beast on the 10 core.

Coming from a Late 2012 iMac?

If you’re an iMac user and need bootcamp, this is the time to buy..

Spot on.

5 years is probably what it'll take for ARM Macs to gain any sort of traction on x64. Fine for casual users but for power users x64 isn't going anywhere at least for most of this decade.

It will take ARM Macs quite a while to over turn the installed base of Intel Mac users.

finally tempted to upgrade from my 2011 27in. iMac. Essentially double the geekbench single core score for the i7 2600 I've got. And almost four times the multicore score. I think my keyshot renders will go a bit quicker :)

I would. It will be about 400% faster. And then you have the gpu improvements. And the SSD improvements.

Azrael.

I look down at reviewers who say something is too good. Referring to the webcam: "I mean, it's a little too clear at times." - Mashable Oh come on now, the old one sucks, the new one is too good. Boo hoo, go get a square centimeter of magic scotch tape and get over it.
Same goes for the CPU/GPU. Too powerful? Don't get the high end option...

Yeah...this is too sharp...this is too good...this machine is too powerful for me...the new one gives me more value for my money compared to the 2019 one...

'Take this cup of suffering away from me...'

Deary me.

Here's the breathless hyperbole from the Gizmodo article that was quoted in the OP:

"On Geekbench 4, a synthetic test of overall system performance, the iMac’s single-core score of 6382 and multi-core score of 42417 impressed us all. Joanna Nelius, Gizmodo’s resident PC and processor expert, exclaimed: 'What the hell did Intel do to this CPU?'"

And here's the reality:

The single-core GB4 results they found for the 2020 iMac with a 3.6 GHz 10-core 10th-gen Intel i9 are only 3.7% faster than than that for the equivalent 2019 machine (3.6 GHz 8-core Core i9-9900K):
6382/6157*100 – 100 = 3.7%.

And the per-core multicore results are only 5.1% faster:
42417/10/(32293/8)*100 – 100 = 5.1%

Reference: https://www.geekbench.com/blog/2019/03/imac-performance-march-2019/

Like all things. It depends on the test.

Azrael.

I could care less about the design change. Although my 2015 iMac is fine, I will be upgrading to this model once the refurbs starting popping up. I want an Intel CPU so I can still run Winblows.

The nano glass is an expensive option but as for me I wouldn't use anything but a matte display.

[clutches pearls] Oh no! Borders! How will I ever fit this into my pocket??

I'm using a 2014 iMac 5K and even at its relatively advanced age it's a very capable machine and the screen is just gorgeous to look at. This new one looks like a real treat and I'd upgrade if I could justify it, but frankly mine is totally sufficient for the work I do with it.
Similar boat with a 2015. I will upgrade in about two years. Apple silicon redesign , and then gen 2 to work out the kinks.

And I run my Business on this thing.

So a nicely spaced out 27 in iMac will run me around 5k .. about the entry price on an iMac Pro and probably pretty comparable in performance. But what about thermal management? Will the i9 run full tilt without throttling? If not the Pro is the better choice.

The nano textured glass is pretty nice. I won't buy a new iMac without it. as for the i9, I'm curious about it versus the i7. I suspect for most tasks the i7 will do almost as well. And now you can run two additional 5k (or realistically, 4k) displays with the iMac, which has always been my dream. Time to start saving for when things get really impressive!

Great updates, but I have to say that the current iMac form factor is starting to look so dated. That alone would hold me back from buying it right now. Those bezels belong in 2010. It's time for a complete refresh, which I suspect will come with new ARM iMac sometime next year.

Be my guest but if the redesign turns out to be a 24 incher only, then it’s DOA for me. Doesn’t matter what’s inside or if it’s a redesigned iPad-like form factor, once you go 27 there’s no going back. I’ve had 24 inch iMacs in the past and although they seemed fine back then, today is a different story.
