Le Clerc didn't exactly cover himself in glory this morning.

Watching the Indy Car races from Road America and such a change from Austria with plenty of fans in the stands and around the track.
No, but Vettel has been consistently making mistakes that have all but ended his chances of another World Title.

I'm glad there aren't any fans at F1 this year, it shows they're taking things seriously. Let's get this season safely out of the way and see where we stand next year.

Not the best race (had to wait for the highlights). Good bit of fun with Lando at the end. Shame there was no podium for McLaren, but Lando is a talent for the future.
Ferrari are just making up the numbers. Makes you see how much their cheating last year was helping them.

Robot trophy delivery needs to go. It’s like the slowest thing ever to feature on a race track!

Isn't it up to the other teams to raise their game? I won't hide the fact I'm a Hamilton fan and want to see him break all the records. But it's not just about who wins, there's almost always plenty of action elsewhere on the track.

It's great to see Norris doing well and there's rarely a dull moment with Vettel these days. 😂

It absolutely is! It rarely happens though.

I try to enjoy the back of the back for what it's worth.

The robots are apparently built by Ferrari.

Agree entirely.

It isn’t easy for either Mercedes or Hamilton to stay on top for so many years. In fact, it’s incredibly difficult for any team/individual to do so.

Ferrari are proof how easy it is for things to go South so quickly.

great to see some young blood coming up as well. There is a lot of talent there to challenge and pressurise the status quo.

loving both races so far, tho I’ll admit last weeks race was better than this week.

Yeah and it's the nature of the beast in F1.

One, or sometimes two, team(s) rise(s) and stays up there for a bit then they get cycled out.

And the best drivers usually seem to find their way to those teams.

IMHO it's pretty much been that way since it began.

To me the 60's - 70's kinda had the "it's anybody's game" feel to it but still there were teams that were going to win and those that would never get close.

I think the big difference between the 60’s and 70’s and today is the reliability. Back then you never knew if you’d finish even if you were winning by a big margin.

it’s been fun watching Norris. And McLaren is P2 in constructors right now. Still a long way to go, but so far they’ve been showing strong, may even give RBR a challenge since it seems like Ferrari isn’t.

Haven't watched the race yet (listed to it on the radio whilst gardening). Lewis seemed to have the race in hand from lights to flag. So from that point of view boring but a lot of action behind him. Verstappen is flattering the Red Bull. I think it's genuine pace is more like Albon's (although I can't imagine the team were happy that he was suddenly able to find pace when needed: why was he not going that pace all race unless they had turned the engine down and back up). The McLaren is a good car (yay!). Let's see if it's just on this track or if they can maintain this over different track styles.

No one has mentioned the Renault protest of the Racing Point. Seems that the FIA either think there is something in the new angle to the protest or just want this resolved fully as they are going to hear the protest once full evidence is gathered.

Ferrari are a spent force for this year. They peaked on their cycle without managing to win a championship so it's a few years in the weeds for them. McLaren are looking like they might peak in time for the regulation changes: perhaps a good opportunity for them to win a championship if the rule changes cause Mercedes to be beatable.

Hamilton has a good chance to take some records: most overall wins is there to be taken and he can equal the most championship wins too. The potential shortness of the season might make some of the more esoteric records harder: highest % of pole positions in a season is currently 87.5%. He needs pole at every announced race to beat that this year! The highest % of wins in a season is currently 75%. That might be possible?

Kimi is also going to get a few records (maybe short lived): if he finishes any race from now on he will take the Most Career Finished Races from Alonso. Of course Alonso is returning! He should also get the Total Entries and Total Starts from Rubens Barrichello before the end of ht season.

No Bueno. This was the first Indy Car race I watched as it was Road America. It will be interesting to see how IMSA handles it at Sebring next weekend.
Wait...

Were you talking about the fans around the A1 Ring in Austria for the F1 race...?

That's what I was talking about. They weren't permitted in the facility but they were watching from the high ground around the track.

Isn't the Racing Point just last years Mercedes? I swear that's what I thought. They were simply running a used car. LOL.

That would definitely be illegal 😛 Renault seem to be claiming something like copyright based on the regulation. I think their argument goes something like:

1) Each competitor must make their own parts (for a certain list of parts)
2) Once made that competitor retains rights to that design for ever (copyright basically)
3) No competitor may buy these parts from another competitor (unless the design is different)/use the same design parts as a competitor
4) Even through Racing Point did not have CAD drawings/designs from Mercedes their copy is so good it is the same part as Mercedes so falls foul of rule 3) as they infringe the copyright from 2)

No, I did notice a few fans on higher elevation in Austria, however I was talking about the hundreds of fans packed around the grounds at Road America at the Indy Car event.

All i know is that nose on the Racing Point looks just like the Merc one...

As I was watching FP2, I was wondering where their newly found pace was coming from. :D

I’m not yet at the point where I pay much attention to the technical design of the cars. (But man, the black Mercedes looks really nice).

Racing Point obviously is using last years Merc but I would be shocked if they were stupid enough to get caught in this day in age. They would have known someone would protest so hopefully they prepared. I know it's illegal but it was nice to have another car fighting in the midfield.

I'm starting to worry about this season. If Ferrari are that bad, there isn't going to be a great championship. Merc should finish 1-2 every race unless they start "over heating" or something. It doesn't make sense for Red Bull to focus any more attention on this years car as they should have second place locked up with no chance at first.

The Renault protest is based around the idea of intellectual property.

Teams must design their own 'wet surface' parts. You cannot buy parts from other teams. You cannot buy the IP from other teams.

I completely disagree with the entire rule, and believe it's anti-F1 and ignores the entire history of the sport. If this rule had existed since the 50s then F1 would've died several times over. But, it is a rule, so tough. It does appear that Racing Point will have a problem here.
