I think the biggest advantage it would give them (which will be less apparent in testing) is it should greatly reduce tire wear over the course of a race. With toe angle fixed, it must always be configured with a good deal of toe-out to make the car turn in properly. However toe-out causes scrubbing on the tires on straightaways. Being able to adjust to what is best for the current direction of the car should allow the tires to last longer. Possibly significantly.

Isn’t it to aid tyre wear? If there tyres go 10 laps longer than everyone else’s, that’s bad for the competition.
As for road cars? I’m not sure the average driver knows what toe in is or how it effects the handling!

I agree with this interpretation. The possible increased straight speeds I mentioned would be a result of decreased scrubbing. Again, it will be interesting to see how Hamilton and Bottas adjust. Seems to be a fairly significant new driving method requirement on top of an already extremely challenging drive. Hopefully the human element can mature with the design.

Cancelling Australia and Vietnam might be the prudent courses of action. I'd arguably cancel Bahrain, as well, since it is not going to have any spectators. That way you limit exposure based on travel (and fatigue from said travel impacting immune system response) and allow two more months to get a handle on how the pandemic is evolving.

Here’s looking forward to the start of the season. Well, that’s today, no?

I just finished both seasons of F1 on Netflix. I learned so much, even more so on those Rookies.

Here’s to F1 in 2020 and the next season on Netflix. I like the rawness of the Netflix show.

With Mercedes-AMG also withdrawing, the Australian Grand Prix has been formally cancelled.
Too bad they're cancelling the race. With Mercedes withdrawing we might, yeah might, see someone other than Mercedes win. Just kidding, they are doing the right thing to cxl. Maybe we should just can the entire season and move on to the 21 spec cars and maybe have some real racing.

At this stage I think the odds are pretty strong that the entire 2020 F1 Season is going to end up cancelled.

It's a shame, but given the nature of the sport, and the disease, it is the only responsible thing to do.

The Formula 1 season will be cancelled within the next 24-48 hours.

My guess is that IndyCar will suspend its season sometime between tomorrow's two practice sessions and qualifying for Sunday's season-opening event.

All of NASCAR's activities will probably be cancelled by Monday/Tuesday, assuming they go forward and run this weekend's events in empty tracks. I wouldn't be surprised if a NASCAR Cup driver or crew member is diagnosed with a COVID-19 infection before Sunday's start.

Kiss motorsports goodbye for the next 6+ months.

I’d agree. Looks like Zaandvoort could be the first GP of the year. You’d also think this might scupper Lewis’s chance of overhauling Schumi’s race wins record this season.

Apart from COVID-19, as someone who regularly watched F1 in the '90s and '00s, I really have to say that today's cars look horrible. Where has all the aesthetics of a Ferrari F2004 gone?

Ugly noses with steps, disgusting look from the side, horrendous HALO - what a shame …

What a ridiculous farce that was. Should have been cancelled more quickly with a clean, decisive communication.

The cars look the way the rules force them too. The rules are so prescriptive that advantage is only found in the extreme details

Well just wait until you hear how they sound. 😂

I know. Have been a F1 fanboi for a good 15 years. Doesn't change the outcome, though … (yeah, I know, it's a matter of taste)

Given the disgusting optics, I'm not sure I can take the presumably disappointing sound 😶
Is it still V6 hybrid thingy stuff? Miss the V10s as much as the aesthetics. To me, 2004 was the pinnacle of Formula 1 cars.
But again, it's just my opinion.

A lot of countries have experienced a huge spike in cases in the last 48 hours so I don’t think F1 is alone here. The Wales vs Scotland six nations match has been cancelled less than 24 hours beforehand too. It’s starting to be taken seriously I think.

And as I predicted, NASCAR and IndyCar have suspended racing.

It is possible that the various motorsports leagues resume competition at some point for an abbreviated season. It's not a sport that has divisional competition (MLB, NBA, NHL) where an unbalanced number of intra-divisional home-away matches would give a team an unfair advantage or disadvantage.

The Formula 1 season may be harder to restart since the competition takes place at venues all around the world and we've already seen that infection does not proceed at the same rate globally. Different nations have their own public safety standards and policies; Formula 1 cannot force any country to host a race during this outbreak.

My money says the entire 2020 Formula 1 season will be scrapped.

With the cancellations, the livelihoods lost, too. And no, not the bloody drivers! Those hardworking people that arrange the setups at each location, those food stand vendors, trying to feed their families.

Awful, just awful, and none of it can be helped now.

Bahrain and Vietnam officially officially postponed by the FIA, who are saying the season may not start until the end of May which would mean the Dutch, Spanish and Monaco GPs are now provisional? So possibly Azerbaijan in June being the first race?

I think that’s a big if tbh.
