My guess is that the COVID-19 shutdown will alter motorsports for years to come, not just Formula 1.

Bernie Ecclestone's comments about sponsors not being enthusiastic about hosting races was a big clue.

Presumably some sponsors (if not all of them) will be less willing to fork out the cash to their teams.

My guess is that the entire F1 league needs to cut costs by 20-25%. Most likely, some of the team owners are in private conversations with F1 officials to alter rule changes to favor simpler cars that are cheaper to design, built, race, and maintain. If they don't then some of the less financially stable teams may quit or be forced to merge and F1 might have 7-8 teams instead of ten. The individual teams will probably need to downsize their staffs. Marketing budgets will be cut.

If there were 20-21 races scheduled, most likely some venues will drop out because of lack of a suitable sponsor. My guess is that the future race schedule will be pared back to 15-18 races.

And this isn't just F1. My belief is that the same fiscal impacts of COVID-19 will hit NASCAR Sprint Cup as well including loss of teams and races. IndyCar is an even greater risk.

Anyone who thinks these motorsports racing leagues can pick up where they left off like nothing happened apart from a few cancelled races is naïve.

Let's not overlook the driving force in all current motorsports, F1, NASCAR, IMSA, E-F1. WRCC, etc, etc.....

Sponsors are dropping like rocks off a cliff. No sponsors=No race budgets. It's far more about the sponsors that fan attendance or a Teams Corporate Funding. You may want to drive an Acura NSX, but if your not given the monetary resources by whomever, you drive an Accord.

It's really that simple from here on out.
 
Let’s not forget F1 in particular is less attractive to sponsors because F1 decided television revenue was more important than the amount of physical people watching. This has happened all over the world and sadly the sport has lost millions of viewers over the past 9+ years.

The teams and management might get a nice little kick back from PPV companies as part of the deals but sponsors are only interested in exposing as many people as possible to their product. This is just one of the many problems the sport has faced in recent years.

I‘m not a fan of simplifying. F1 is supposed to be the top of motorsports - at least that’s how they used to define themselves.
This should be reflected in the cars.

I'm not a fan of simplifying either, but I do want the cars to be smaller. The limos they are piloting around the track now make racing at most tracks boring, and completely rule out others as candidates for F1 races. An IndyCar sized car would open up a lot more courses that right now would be too small.

The only simplification I would want is to ditch hybrids and go back to V8s or V10s to bring more engine manufacturers into the sport. The hybrids they are running now are just way too expensive for all but a handful of companies.
 
For me, the Ferrari F2004 was the best looking Formula 1 car ever. Such an elegant car! And, technically impressive as well. One of the most successful and reliable racing cars in history.

My opinion might be tinted by being a Michael Schumacher and Ferrari fan, though.

About time.

Good news. A 4 times WDC who struggled to adapt against stronger opposition (twice) and in new team surroundings. I think a lot of people now realise how important that Red Bull bubble was for his success.

I think Sainz will be Ferrari's target. He's younger and cheaper than Danny Ric and perhaps not as good. I don't think Ferrari want a driver who will be quite good enough to challenge Le Clec, but good enough to challenge those behind him. If I was Vettel I would seriously be considering retirement. His option of McLaren who are content with cheaper drivers and over a decade of slipping from the top spot would be a poor option and Renault are rebuilding and probably won't be good enough again during the time Vettel has left in the sport. If Hamilton wants to stay at Merc, does anybody see them wanting Vettel alongside him? I have no doubt Lewis would beat him convincingly but Vettel is a handful when he gets upset so not worth the management headache IMO.

Agreed. Sainz Is the front runner. I think Vettel will retire. He can’t focus at the level required any longer. He wants more family time. I don’t see him moving to other series either. I think he is done with motor sports in general.

I‘d also love to see Daniel drive for Ferrari, but I agree Sainz is a much better money/performance value at this point.
