But Albon's Red Bull is a superior car to Ricciardo's Renault. And Albon, passing a rival team's driver for third, had a lot less at stake than Championship Leader Hamilton passing his teammate for the lead. If Lewis had messed up and touched wheels with Bottas he'd have taken out his entire team's championship points. Hamilton's move on Bottas was a) incredibly gutsy and b) perfectly executed.

I know the "Driver of The Day" poll loves to reward the scrappy underdogs. But, IMHO, they tend to undervalue Lewis' achievements.

On to Sochi!

Haha it was a nice overtake but honestly... Lewis overtaking Bottas should just . Bottas has 8 wins in 4 seasons in a completely dominant car. For comparison, Nico took at least 5 wins per season off Lewis and took 9 wins off him in 2016 and that's with most of us rating Lewis higher than Nico. What does that say about Bottas? He's becoming a pylon and I feel sorry for him because it seems like he's trying his hardest.

Don’t feel to sorry for him. This months pay for me is about as much as he earns in the time it took to write this post.

Lol .. well when you put it like that. I bet he's had a nice ride on that beautiful bike Mercedes gave him with his girlfriend Ms. Cromwell. Probably had a nice dinner and some wine while we had to work today... yep no longer feel sorry for him :D

FIA:
  • Lets put rainbows on the safety car
  • Lets encourage the cars to have rainbows
  • Lets have a hashtag for ending racism
  • Lets have an anti-racism stance at the start of each race
  • Lets have drivers take the knee
  • Lets have an anti-racism banner at the end of the race
Also FIA:
  • THAT TSHIRT IS TOO POLITICAL.
Aye. Nae bother.

I'm with Lewis and I'm glad Mercedes backed him.

I’m not surprised. He crossed a line with the shirt. There are better ways to show support.
As much as I have always supported and still support Lewis the racing driver, I can’t help but think this activism is all part of him marketing himself in North America. He’s thinking long term about his fame after F1 and he’s been building his brand there since his McLaren days. Obviously it’s a topical cause and rightly so, I just cringe a bit when a racing driver so far removed from the plight promotes it as his passion. When John Boyega put his career on the line in protests a few months back, I believed him. Let’s not forget he grew up with the murdered Damilola Taylor and surrounded by gangs, whereas Lewis had a very middle class upbringing. No offence to Lewis but I feel it’s more about self promotion and looking cool than the real cause. He should be allowed to continue though as it’s his choice IMO.

The flip side of that coin is, he's a man using his platform to further a cause which should benefit others. Whilst he is not effected by it, if his activism helps improves the lives of others, is this not a good thing? He has realised he has a platform and is lucky enough that people listen to him - why should he not use this to benefit others?

(I am not saying you're wrong, just presenting the other side of the argument).

Lewis has always been about Lewis. However, this is not the site to discuss such topics. 😉

Touche'.

However, I do love seeing the young drivers like Albon and Russell coming through the ranks.

Single-mindedness is an attribute as a professional sports person, the arrogance and self confidence that you are the best has to be there, otherwise, why bother!

FIA has ruled out an investigation over the shirt, so we can put this to bed (or move it to the Political News thread): https://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/54161846

Yes. It was never going to end well. A little shocked it even had legs.

In other news, will Alonso get some track time later this year?

Late to the post-race commentary, but I think Mugello is a pretty great track. The changes in elevation and array of turns played well on TV. I'd love to see a GP there on an annual basis; make it part of the regular F1 calendar/tour.

Only if they change the DRS. It’s turn one and another easy pass. Needed a bit more uncertainty on the passing.

I can't see them ever replacing Monza with Mugello and you don't have 2 Grand Prix in the same country during a regular season.

2 GPs in the same country is pretty standard throughout F1 history lol. They usually tie it in with whatever is popular at the time. UK had Silverstone and Donington when they had Mansell (only for him to leave F1 lol). Nurburgring and Hockenheim when Schumacher was popular. Imola and Monza. Barcelona and Valencia when Alonso was at his peak popularity.

I always felt like Bernie ran things as if he were Dr Doom...
All credit to him he effectively came in and took ownership of a sport and convinced the teams in the 70’s he was the man to look after their best interests. Little did they know he was taking around 75% of the race profits and virtually none of the TV money was being passed on. I think he got bitten by the greed bug and forgot he actually was once a driver and had an interest in motor racing! It became a dictatorship which I’m sure we are all glad has expired. I think if Ken Tyrell was still around Bernie might have had a few more beatings lol.

I'll don my Nomex and say that I'd rather see them lapping Mugello than Monza each year, or at least alternate years. I understand the historical significance of Monza, but the races there never grabbed me, at least not as much as last week's GP at Mugello.

I'm talking about present day, not years ago.
