Outstanding show by George. So glad he had the chance to drive the W11.

More evidence as far as I’m concerned that Lewis is a Good Driver in an amazing race car. Put that “W09, W10, W11 Era” Asterisk by his last 3 WDC’s. 😉

Well done to George. Just goes to show how dreams can be realised.

So is anybody interested in predicting the future?

I’ll go for Bottas messing up somewhere, Verstappen for the win and Russell on the podium
This is a reasonably plausible outcome. Maybe Bottas not even making the podium and Perez to take the other Podium position?

Or that Russell is another great driver who up to now is in the worst car on the grid.
Anyway it’s good he’s getting this opportunity. Hope he gets a podium.

I'd love to know how many times the Championship winning driver hasn't been in the best car that season. I suspect the answer is 'not many'.
Well the best drivers normally get to drive for the best teams.

But as has been shown many times, in the same car, the better drivers shine through. Hamilton vs Bottas, Verstappen vs Albon or M Schumacher vs any of his team mates....it's been the same pretty much all the way back over many decades.

A good driver can make the difference, just as a good car can. Put a good driver in a good car and then get the best result possible.

From the time I actively watched F1, I'd say Michael in 1994 and 1995 (best car was the Williams then). Arguably also 2000 (there seems to be no real consensus as to whether the Ferrari or the McLaren was the better car in that season).
Also, maybe Kimi in 2007. The McLaren was very strong, but the internal fighting between Alonso and Hamilton possibly cost them the title. And of course there was also that espionage thingy …

Is it the best car because that driver is there? The feedback they give, the direction to development, the ability to push and show where the weaknesses are?

That would depend on the driver. From Kimi has been said (at least in his earlier years), as well as JPM, that while they were certainly talented drivers, their input to engineers wasn’t as valuable as, say, Michaels. Then there’s also the dedication. When testing was still practically unlimited in the early 2000s, Michael was constantly doing his laps in Fiorano, improving the car, while others enjoyed life on some beach ...

Michaels work ethic changed in 1992 apparently when he was spoken to by Ross Brawn who pointed out the reason Senna was so good was because he took part in testing and didn’t let the test drivers do all the work. Previously to that Michael was quite lazy about putting the effort in apparently.

Might be true, doesn't change a thing from what I said, though 🙂

Yeah we can argue this all day but honestly at the end of the day Lewis has 7 titles, as did Schumacher, and it is because they both delivered when it mattered.

In training, development, and on race day.

And face it, whether you like like Lewie or not he's as good, or better, than you or I want him to be.
